yoyo1234
hey guys, thanks in advance for your help... (dual booting with xp and mac) Im trying to install "JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3" (OS x86 10.4.8) important specs are: Asus P5N-E SLI (nforce 650i) mobo core 2 duo E6300 ATI x1950 pro 256 mb Maxtor ata 133 40 GB (only drive) WD Sata2 250 GB special editon (caviar) Im trying to install OS X, as i mentioned. I boot from the cd, but it does not get very far. It stops progress and starts printing "Still Waiting for Root Devices" which keeps showing up recursively. The maxtor drive is an old drive i have that im trying to make use of with OS X. I have tried unplugging all other drives so that the OS dvd can only see it. Nothing that i have tried works. I have no clue what to do to fix it...help! BTW.. the maxtor drive is formatted as a primary FAT32 (the WD drive has xp on it already) Edited February 26, 2007 by yoyo1234 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43607-still-waiting-for-root-device/ Share on other sites
mastrchee
it means your sata controller hasnt been detected by the osx set up. it happens for me too, but it works when i disable ahci mode. yoyo1234
thanks grippa, i took your advice and tried to disable sata. i disabled the JMicron Sata Controller, and all 4 ports as well as the dma transfer. I tried it and same results. I copied down the messages so maybe it will be easier to figure out for those of you who know what you're doing, unlike me. The drive that im trying to install to is IDE, just thought i would throw that out because i failed to mention that ealier. BTW the "..." in the quote are places where i left stuff out. I left one line out and most of the line telling me it found a firewire port. yoyo1234
i have the maxtor drive in the primary ide slot and cable select jumper. Could that be the problem? Or is it possible the maxtor drive is incompatible with mac os x? Bucket6
it means your sata controller hasnt been detected by the osx set up. it happens for me too, but it works when i disable ahci mode. sorry to bump an old thread but how does one go about disabling ahci mode Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43607-still-waiting-for-root-device/#findComment-316129 Share on other sites
yoyo1234
i have no idea how to disable it in ahci, it only lets me alter modes in my bios, but i figured out that my jumpers were set to cable select (i thought they were set decisively, but they werent). Apparently OSX doesnt like that. I didnt originally post back, because i saw no need to bump my thread back up when no one was actively still helping anyway. Since its bumped back up anyway, i thought i might give resolution. So lessons i learned: In OSX Jumpers matter Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43607-still-waiting-for-root-device/#findComment-317132 Share on other sites
spartango
i have same problem on similar setup. Asus p5bw-la, conroe, nvidia geforce 7300le, etc. but my mobo has no ide, so i have to rely on sata. i haven't tried ahci, is it in bios? thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43607-still-waiting-for-root-device/#findComment-317909 Share on other sites
quannum
I'm also trying to install JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3" (OS x86 10.4.8) on my Asus P5N-E SLI, but I can't get past 'waiting on root device'. My setup: PATA1-M: Samsung 80Gb PATA1-S: LG DVD-RAM SATA1: WD Raptor 74Gb I want to install OSX on the SATA1 device, but I'm stuck! yoyo: Did you do anything other than force master/slave on your IDE devices to boot? bottleNeckKiller
You guys are going at it the wrong way. P5N-E SLI has chipset 650i that does not support Mac OS X out of the box or natively. You have to get it working with other methods. Try to search with google with "650i insanelymac" or "680i insanelymac" so get to the alternative installation method. yoyo1234
@ bottleneckkiller: Thanks for the info. i appreciate it. @quannum: The main things i did is make sure my cd/dvd drive was the master ide and set so on the jumper and that the other drive(target drive) was also set as a master. Thats all i can think of, what kind of errors are you getting? Does it say ide device blocking bus or anything like that. That is what i got. Why is this board not supported... I know that most boards are not supported until they mod the apple software. Is this because no one has made it work b/c it is so new? Or is it just impossible to make it work? I hope its not the latter, b/c that would be slighty depressing... Basically im asking is this a permanent thing or will it be supported in the future and just isnt now b/c its new? (Is that coherent enough?) Edit: Actually if i understand a post thingy that envying did, i think he got the jas 10.4.8 to load up (nic, sound dont work, but id at least like to get past a the grey apple. Its a lovely apple, but its not much to look at and it kinda just sits there) Edited March 7, 2007 by yoyo1234 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43607-still-waiting-for-root-device/#findComment-318217 Share on other sites
mastrchee
bottleNeckKiller : yes what your saying is exactly true!, i didnt know the others were trying to install on an nvidia controller coz i was kind of in a rush and didnt read what their controller was, oops sorry (a). the achi method only worked for my ich7-r. others with nvidia : search this forum, there's lots of information about installing on nvidia sata/ide controllers. Bucket6 : Many motherboads have it in different names, Some have it has SATA Native mode : on / off , or ACHI Mode : on / off, SATA Mode : legacy / enhanced. But still if you trying to install on a nvidia controller, you need the proper kexts. yoyo1234 : you seem to have a MCP 51, see this thread, they have developed a driver > http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...20sata&st=0 Edited March 7, 2007 by grippa Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43607-still-waiting-for-root-device/#findComment-318336 Share on other sites
Vipersfate
I had the same problem. I was using the 10.4.8 from JaS, and my problem was I was using a slower cable (ATA-66) cable. And my dvd was bad. on the 3rd one, it worked, with a new cable (ATA-133). I hope that helps somehow (I also have the MCP51 chipset). I'm getting phenomenal speeds with my HDD, just no sata, which I'm looking into fixing. yoyo1234
Well maybe i didnt make this clear earlier. but i wanted to make it clear now. I did finally get past the silly waiting for root device. I used to diskutil (10.4.8 and 10.4.7 diskutil) to format and installed with no problems. HOWEVER, when i rebooted.... It said i had to restart and such. Stupid grey apple.... anyway, thats where i stand at the moment... @bottleneckkiller, did you ever get it to work on 650i?...a lot of the stuff i found for 680i do they work synomously? and vmware = rc.cdrom -- 6 illegal instructions. so that doesnt work either (maybe b/c i used jas, iono) @grippa...do you think changing the stuff in single mode (to accomodate the mcp 51) would possibly help get past the grey apple? BTW you were right thats the exact chipset i have. Thanks guys for all your continual help. much thanks! spartango
i have been informed by SABR and others(thank you) that it is also important(beside ahci disable) to connect any sata dvd drive into the "Raid" sata ports to get rid of this, because the root device is the dvd. i am trying this and will report soon. spartango
I tried moving my dvd drive to sata(raid) and disconnecting my raid drives, but this did not work, so i am going to try using external cd drive to install from. Does anybody have other suggestions? my mobo has no ide and it seems that the dvd drive is incompatible.
