Delfire
So here's the deal, I've been running OSX x86/Windows Xp/*Insert Popular Linux Distro Here* for more than half a year now and I love the triple/quad booting very much. Recently the laptop broke down on me and my extended warranty gave me the option of either a sucky replacement or gift card over $1,000 to...Circuit City . I decided to take the card to have the option of choice. I also found out that Apple is testing out selling its macbooks through Circuit City (online store I think) . But now a huge conundrum now faces me (See title of topic). All the major stores out there were preloading laptops/desktops with Vista this week, so I'm most likely going to end up with Vista if I buy a "PC" laptop next week. So since I value the members of InsanelyMac so much, I would appreciate it very much if some constructive input (or alternatives) is given. Please keep the fanboyism (Windows or Apple) down a notch . OPTION 1. I could buy a vista-loaded laptop (HP, Sony, or etc). I'll use it for a while, if I don't like vista...which is probably going to happen, then I'll reinstall everything and triple boot Xp, OSX (ALMOST seamlessly), and perhaps a Linux distro (Ubuntu/SUSE/Gentoo). Pros of this option being able to play a few games (Better gpu probably), still be able to boot OSX (almost), and obviously TRUE windows support. OPTION 2. Get a black Macbook. Use it for a while, and then PERHAPS dual-boot with Xp with bootcamp (I'm not a big fan of virtualization-Parallels). Pros of OPTION 2 obviously being true apple hardware support with OSX, a VERY nice looking/functioning laptop, still be able to boot Windows XP (almost). In this option, I could barely run any games with the low-end gpu of macbooks, IT IS SO MUCH MORE UNNECESSARILY EXPENSIVE FOR THE HARDWARE THAT IT'S SELLING (Forgive me for the caps)...But I still can't decide! OSX x86 is holding me back from buying a macbook and encouraging me at the same time, a paradox indeed. So I need someone to help me by telling me something that perhaps I don't know or didn't realize. Telling me that a Mac don't get any virus or spyware is no help to me - I have not gotten any of those on my UBER-clean XP machine for way more than a year now. Thank you guys so much . willgonz
Ok let's pretend Malware doesn't exist. I have been a Microsoft fan since DOS 3.3 So when this whole X86 thing exploded I feel in love with the MAC OS. So anyway here is what I have learned. With the Mac OS. After you have tons of programs installed the system runs just as fast as the first day I bought it. I notice with some of my Windows machines the more I install the slower the system gets. Reformat reinstall and it is faster again. Even doing defrag on a regular basis doesn't help much either. I like the fact that you can just backup the system. I think OS X is faster at recovering from a reinstall of the OS. Basically just drag your apps and data back over. I like the fact that the WiFi is smart. You go somewhere. You turn on your wireless. It finds an open access point and connects. The next time it already knows. I feel a lot of the computers out there are put together from parts of the lowest bidder. However, Apple does it smarter by putting things into your system to help it last longer. Like their Magsafe power adaptor and Sudden Motion Sensor. You can't go wrong with a MacBook. rollcage
I think as a computer overall, the macbook would be a better option. OSX is the better OS, and Leopard is going to be out (soon?), you're going to be able to support it fully. The only reason that I would tell you to get a Vista notebook is to play games, if they're really that important then don't get the macbook. And either way you go, if you're thinking of putting Vista on it, then get 2 gb of ram. I think it really comes down more to which OS you use more often and how much gaming matters to you.
