As I was walking home the other day, I saw something shiny in the street. I thought it was money, but it was some old key. Anyway, now I'm wondering what this key is actually used for. Here's a high-res image of the front and back side:

The words on the key aren't any more legible to me than they appear in that scan. I think I see the words "For American" and "Motors Cars" on the front side, but it could say "Motoro" or something.

I'm pretty sure it's for a car. Does anybody have any idea? If it is for a vehicle, what type?

EDIT: Using some of the words on the key as search terms, I found a section on Wikipedia about a company called "American Motor Cars" which went out of business in 1913. Due to World War 1, the production of cars totally halted for a while. This key could go to one of the earliest cars ever built, but part of me doubts it. Then again, this key looks like it's been through hell and back as far as how worn out it is.

It looks more like a key for a small box or something else insecure (that appears to be a easily picked lock, from the shape of the key). However, given the text you found, I would guess it is in fact related to an AMC vehicle. Except you got the wrong AMC :)

This is the modern AMC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Motors_Corporation

Which would put it new enough for such a key.

Maybe it's a key to this car then :): http://www.musclecarcalendar.com/scotts_amc_home.htm

It doesn't appear to be a very modern key. Maybe one from the 60s or 70s. Right now I'm betting it goes to an AMC muscle car. All of their cars after the 1980s were under the Chrysler name.

I don't exactly see any AMC Gremlins or stuff around my neighborhood. In the area that I found out, none of the cars are any older than a 1990s model.

It has to be one of these cars:
