So I've lived with sinus problems all my life and I've heard that nasal washing, however gross it sounds, is really good for peeps like me.

Anyone out there do it?

Here's more info:

I know somone who is a Yoga Fanatic and swears by nasal washing...

According to him, the main reason for colds & other nasal "problems" is presence of

bacteria/virii in the nasal tract. Apparently the nasal washing cleans this better than

the body itself.

I personally think it probably works more by "Self Suggestion" / Belief, than any real medical reason.

I think this method holds some level of credibility.

First off, this isn't a "cure" for the common cold. Like any over-the-counter drugs, this can relieve some of the main symptoms of the common cold, but ultimately, you just need to be patient to let the cold subside. Once a pathogen enters either the nasal cavity or the mouth and bypasses the immune system's first line of defense (nasal hairs and mucus), the damage is basically done. Bacteria can be killed easily enough by antibiotics, but a wide array of viruses could reside in the throat, intenstines, and other areas of the body where they tend to cause mahem. Basically, if viruses or bacteria are already caught in the nasal passage by either mucus or hairs, they're harmless. In fact, they'll eventually be ingested by the body. A flow of salt water can flush them out, but it wouldn't kill any pathogens that are already in areas other than your nose.

Ok, so this won't cure a cold. But it can still aliviate some of the most annoying symptoms of a cold or alergy. Warm water can cause the nasal passages to open, but you don't necessarily have to flush it into your nose. Hot steam can give the same effect. As far as salt goes, it's one of the most basic minerals needed by the human body. In addition, salt can kill bacteria. In the past, many meats were heavily salted before refridgerators were invented. Needless to say, this same pratical idea can be applied to the killing of pathogens.

I'm not a doctor. I'm not even in college. So take my advice with a grain of salt (no pun intended.) :thumbsup_anim:
