Dell GX270

768m ram

P4 2.6ghz w/HT, SSE2

Nvidia (BTC label) FX 5200 w/128mb AGP

Installed from JaS 10.4.7 DVD

applied Jas 10.4.8 combo update "JaS.10.4.8.Intel.SSE2.SemtheX.Beta9.dmg"

repaired permissions and TRIED update_prebinding per directions in post http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...+semthex+beta9# - see POST #8

update_prebinding locks the machine up and had to power down.

restart, reinstalled loginwindow.app per instructions at above link and rechecked permissions.

Restarted machine, everything looks great, about this machine works, shows proper CPU and correct speed, itunes works, everything excellent, mostly but still no ci/qe !

uname -a says,

Darwin locahost 8.8.1 Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.1: Tue Dec 5 21:19:07 AZOT 2006; semthex:/nebukadnezar/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386

video card is reported as a generic video.

I have tried the following,

Macvidia. Card is properly reported as an Nvidia FX5200 and I'm able to switch resolution and refresh rate but no ci/qe..

Titan. Card is properly reported as an Nvidia FX5200 and I'm able to switch resolution and refresh rate but no ci/qe..

natit = black screen. No clue what the problem is. I'm a TOTAL NOOB and am utterly clueless to what I am doing.

I used the natit auto installer and it went through all sorts of things for several minutes, it then told me it was done and told me to restart.

I click restart, the grey startup screen comes up for a few minutes, the disk light goes wild for a bit then the screen goes black and there is NOTHING I can do except hold the power button down.

It reboots and goes through the same thing every time. Once this happens I don't know what to do except reformat and start over from scratch.

I've read that other people have made FX5200 work, WTF am I doing wrong?

I've erased, reformatted and reinstalled OSX so many times I lost count. The more I read the forum here the more confused I get, as everybody has a "HEY! This is the way to fix it! This way worked for me!"

Well, 99% of those posts don't get many if any details on how they did it.

Reading the posts here is like trying to count rain drops in a hurricane.

Can someone loan a brother a fish? I'm all fished out and I could use some help, seriously..

Thanks!

when your system boots up, do the nv hal kext's get loaded, i installed titan and it recognized the card fine but the nv* kext files werent right, after I copied them from the apple official 10.4.8 combo update it worked fine

look at this thread http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=35743

Replace GeForce.kext and all others that start with GeForce using the official 10.4.8 for Intel from Apple, also replace IOGraphicsFamily.kext and OpenGL.framework using the same package. Do this using Pacifist. Do not change anythig in GeForce.kext. Reboot and cross your fingers. You will need Titan.kext in your Extensions folder.

I would if I knew how.

Once I've installed the natit autodetection package it's game over for me.

I can NOT get back in to the machine. I get a black screen and that's it.

I can then do ONLY the following, (dictated by my skill level)

1. hold the power button down until it shuts down,

2. reboot from the DVD, wipe the disk and try again, and every retry is the same result, a black screen and another wipe/reinstall.

I do not know what to do with this machine, I am NOT an experienced mac user. I know nothing about osx, I am an idiot.

I do want to learn. But I'll never learn anything more than how to reformat the hard disk at this rate.

Thanks!

Press F8 when your machine starts. This will bring you to the Darwin bootloader. Type -s to start in single user mode. Type /mount -uw /. Type rm -rf System/Library/Extensions/Natit.kext. That will remove the Natit.kext. Now type reboot. If it starts up try using the Titan.kext.

Yay!! You da man!

That got me back up again, at least to the point that it appears mostly normal.

Here's what's weird, it's an AGP controller but now it says

Type: "VGA-Compatible Controller"

Bus: PCI

VRAM (Total) 128 MB

Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x0322

Revision ID: 0x00a1

Displays:

Display:

Core Image: Not Supported

Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

I have it connected to a Dell P1130 21" CRT, I wonder if that it doesn't like the Dell?

I have several of these big Dells and use them on Linux and winblows machines without any problems.

What I don't know is why when I run the Natit auto installer all I get is a black screen.

I did that right after a fresh install without any other mods to the system other than the 1048 8.8.1 patch, which I understand is mandatory.

Ok, thank you for telling me how to recover from a malfunction. Any good tips on getting things all up to par now?

Thanks!! :(

Try it using the Titan.kext

I copied the titan.kext over, set the owner and permissions then edited it's info.plist and put my card ID in.

Rebooted, came up with a notice to power down.

No go on that. Apparently I just don't get it..

Anyway, I cycled power, deleted the titan.kext and rebooted. Back up but I've noticed some aweful side effect while running as a generic vga, when I move things around it badly mangles them up..

I don't understand why I'm having so much trouble and everyone else it having such great luck..... :)

bigmacattack said i dont know how.

I'm not gone say it a 3th time read my topic about 6600gt, link is in signature.

Woa!!

It works!!

I did a fresh install of 1047, applied JaS 1048 combo w/semthex, etc..

Then did what you said in your "13th try" thread, to the letter and it works!

Full QE/CI, all the sweetness of a retail Mac! Oh hell yeah!

This started out as an experiment, I didn't start out thinking I would ever get anywhere with it but little did I know.

Now that I know I can build a full blown Mac from scratch, I will do so with a normal size machine and not this puny little

Dell GX270 toy w/ 1 slot. :(

And I will buy a copy of OSX now because I believe it's the least I can do.

I could never ever afford a real Mac, they are way over priced. I would love to have one but I'm just po' folks.

Well a HUGE thanks to Jas, wow, the Titan guy and all the other folks that made this possible, thank you all very much!!

YAY!!! :)
