Funky frank
Hi, I wonder why there is still no hardware from Apple targeting the pro audio users. Most fast professional audio hardware is PCI based. Mac Pro only supports pcie, and as I read in tests, the analog audio quality of macs is generally quite poor. This is the reason why I am interested in the OSX on a PC thing. In my opinion its a big misktake not to provide the customers with pci slots and drivers. What are your opinions? enb14
Totally agree with you but the problem with vanilla osx even if you have an example (M-Audio 192 or 2496) you can plug it into your vanilla PC but since it lacks of drivers you are out of luck to use it so right now I'm in your same position right now, I'm waiting for a PCIe solution like those M-Audio 192, current PCIe card right now are extremely expensive just look at those Pro Tools HD and so. bluedragon1971
Are you forgetting that Mac Pros not only have analog audio out but digital as well?
nagal
PCI slots would have been very nice indeed but there are a lot of FireWire interfaces that are very nice. I built my hackintosh for audio and I am going to use a FW interface. It would have been nice to keep using my EMU 1212M but what the heck, time for a new sound card anyways
Joe The Dragon
mac pro should have pci-x
yoda75
Umm, PCI-Express totally wipes the floor with PCI. DSP processor cards have really met their match. Check this out: http://apogeedigital.com/products/symphony_performance.php ...not only competitive but straight up faster and and can handle more tracks. Pricey but still about 5k less expensive than a Pro Tools HD core card PCI.
enb14
Those cards are $3190 the cheapest model, which is too expensive, is cheaper than pro tools but still expensive, most of us are waiting for a sub $200.00 sound card so we have to continue waiting
Synaesthesia
Nobody's mentioned firewire audio, which can carry 16 digital channels of audio pretty easily. That's what I would use, with something like the Alesis multimix firewire mixer. I know, it sucks that there's no support for PCI.
limini
Are you forgetting that Mac Pros not only have analog audio out but digital as well? Actually ALL the current Macbook lineup has combined optical digital and analog audio ins and outs (1/8 th inch jacks with the tip being the optical part). The specs look great, but how is the I/O latency? Fast enough for live monitoring of a recording signal and for playing back soft synths in real-time? Kosmokrator
I think you mean semi-pro-audio. Don't forget that ProAudio is still 90% ProTools, which happily runs on Intel/PCIe. But, as always, YMMV..
