Hey All,

I noticed alot of people were having trouble getting newer versions of Mac to run on Dell Inspiron 6400's, and managed to get it working today so decided to write a quick install guide, hope it works for you too and makes sense!

Please pre-install: VMWare (Server, Workstation... whichever you want), Daemon Tools (Or equvilant!)

Note: It *may* be possible to do a complete native install this way... but I haven't tried a complete native install... only through VMWare actually installing to a Physical Partition (So it's runs natively!)

Step 1: Setup WMWare as Follows:

Memory (whatever your max recommended is)

Vitrual Hard Drive... purely needed to get the VM to boot from the CD for some reason

Hard Drive linked to physical pre-formatted HFS+ partition

CDROM - IDE (Auto detect)

Ethernet Host-only (Stops registration being submitted at the end)

Audio (auto detect)

Virtual Processors: 1 make sure this is NOT 2!

Host OS: Windows NT NOT FreeBSD otherwise you will get a kernel panic error!

Step 2: Install Daemon Tools, mount ISO

Step 3: Edit .vmx file (My Documents/My Virtual Machines/your_vmname/your_vmname.vmx), add paevm="true" on the last new line, Start the Virtual Machine

Stupidity note: Replace your_vmname with the name of the Virtual Machine.

Step 4: At OS Boot options enter the following: -v -x platform=x86PC

Step 5: Continue though setup until the "Welcome to the JaS 10.4.7 Installer" screen appears.

Step 6: Click "Utilities" in the menu then choose "Disk Utilities" go to erase, select RIGHT disk, click erase, click OK wait for erasing and partitioning to be completed...

Step 7: Quit Disk Utility, Continue with Setup, Select Disk when prompted (I chose 10.7GB), then skip the disk check

Step 8: Make sure to click customise on Install type and select the JaS.OS.10.4.7.Patches options that are RELEVANT to your PC/Laptop - don't tick all of them - use the arrow to expand your options, make sure to at LEAST instal Jas Intel 10.4.7 Update Combo and the SSE3 Update Patch, feel free to untick Language Translations and Additional Fonts, along with any printer drivers you don't want installed.

Sit back and relax while mac is installed (it takes around 10 mins on my Laptop).

Step 9: When it asks you to reboot... SHUT DOWN the Virtual Machine instead of rebooting. Shut down windows, then NATIVELY boot into Mac, no need to use VMWare, it'll work fine natively now the install is out of the way! - use the chain0 file method with boot.ini... search the forums if you don't know what i'm on about. note: may crash when trying to setup a network card, if so simpily select "My computer does not connect to the internet" and click continue.

Step 10: Fill in the details required for registration etc... then finally you boot into Mac... and it works!

Hope this helps!

haha through vmware huh?

well my laptop boots natively in OSX. No vmware unless they release fusion to run xp from osx and not viceversa.

Nice guide there, Macnub. :happymac: I'm wondering if a USB Soundblaster Live might be a good solution to the perenial sound problem. Anyone out there have much experience of it?

Sound Blaster USB does work. I didn't need any additional kexts to make it work, it was plug and play for me.

Thanks Davesworld, that is good to know. :happymac:

Folks, what is the screen quality like, did anyone go for the Truelife option? Do both cores in the processor work? What is the battery life when running OS X, under light load and under heavy load? Also, which battery do you have, the six cell or the nine cell?

Detosx,

I'm currently running OSX 10.4.8 on a Dell 6400. As far as I can tell, resolution is locked at 1024x768, no 1280x800 available, can only use 1 core, LAN works, audio & wireless not work, not sure about the battery life as I always use external power.

O.K. This is very simple:

I didn't want dual boot (just OS X) on my Dell Inspiron 6400 so I did this:

1- Found a Linux Install CD (ubuntu is perfect, knoppix too)

2- Made 1 partition and made it active. shutdown.

3- Booted using Jas 10.4.8 + diskutil fix iso. (defiant fix)

4- In DiskUtil Made 1 HFS+ Partition

5- Installed OSX with Intel and support options.

6- Replaced /system/Library/IONetworkingFamily.kext from the one in 10.4.6

Get it here-> http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...ost&id=5785

7- In Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility, Repaired permissions, restarted. DONE!

OS X 10.4.8 running in 30 mins!--> I think it's possible to skip step #1 and #2 , but I didn't try.

I got 1200x800 QE/CI. Video is GREAT with no isssues.

Audio is WORKING !!! (Sigmatel 9200) ---> HDAPatcher to use is this one:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...ost&id=8011

The "linux codec dump" is here --> http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...ost&id=7907

Just drag this codec dump onto the Patcher icon (onced you unzipped it!), and reboot!

- Wireless: WORKING with Dell 1390 Wireless, NOT WORKING with Intel 3945ABG---> sell the Intel and get a 10$ Dell Wireless 1490 on any site like eBay or others!

Thanks to everyone who guided me! Hope this can help people out!

Msg-me if sound is working for you!

Good Luck to all!

Was trying to install "JaS 10.4.8 SSE3 SSE2" to my Inspiron 6400, with specs:

- Intel Core Duo T2500 @ 2.0 GHz

- 2 GB RAM

- 120 GB SATA Drive

- ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 (256 MB)

- 1680x1050 LCD

Made single partition for OSX.

- With ATI1x00 support options was not able to get past Apple logo screen (vertical bars on display, etc).

- With ATI1x00 disabled (and all install options off except Intel support) was able to boot and log into Mac OS. No networking (Broadcom/Intel WiFi) or sound (SigmaTel) though.

After replacing IONetworkingFamily.kext mentioned above and rebooting I was getting lock-ups almost immediately after logging into desktop. At that point got tired and pissed off and installed XP. :)

Offtopic: On a side note, as a long-time Windows user, who recently bought Mac Mini (to use it with flat-panel TV) I must say that I'm really impressed by OS X.

Used Windows Vista since RTM release - it's just an OS X rip. Done really badly and waaay overbloated.

Planning to sell this laptop and get myself MacBook. :2cents:

Sound didnt work for me.

The codec dump shows up as an html, but I found it through the b130 guide. You can copy and paste the text to a text editor and name it Stac9200.txt.

Why does every guide seem to demand using Daemon Tools for mounting the ISO for VMWare? VMWare can mount an ISO directly to the virtual CD/DVD drive. Just seems like extra effort.

It's because VMWare can not handle the OS X DVD ISO format properly :) - if you try that you'll get read errors!

Sorry to hear that, what version of Mac are you trying to do that on? I used Version 10.4.8 with the latest Semthex kernel, and 10.4.9, both worked fine on my Inspiron 6400.

Hey..

Judging by your signature, not only did you get MacOS on 6400, but OS10? All that through VMWare, or is tere a method to do it directly? To tell the truth, the VMWare way seems much to compliacted for me. If I format my harddrive and boot from the Jas 10.4.8 DVD, will i be able to install MacOS?

my specs are:

c2d t7200 (2ghz)

ati x1400

1gb ram

dell wireless

bradcom

sigmatel

120gb sata.

Installed JaS 10.4.8, then manually upgraded with JaS 10.4.9 Update and 10.4.10 Update. Plus ran System Updates. So far so good.

Can't change resolution on ATI 1300 wide screen. No sound on SigmaTel 9200 (ran AppleAzalia - system says HD Audio Out, but still can't hear a thing).

Using cpu=1 runs smoothly. Wireless 1390 runs great (used a guide to turn it on, can get if anyone needs it).

Used Taruga's AppleHDA_Patcher v1.11 and this codec:
