XP1
I burned the JaS 10.4.8 DVD after verifing md5 and sha1 hashes match. I am unable to start the install process since there is a cancel sign on the Apple logo when it trys to load. I boot up the dvd with -v and I get "Still waiting for root device." I tried mach_kernel -v and mach_kernel.mifki -v, mifki only restarts the computer and mach_kernel does the same thing. I put the hard drive and DVD drive jumper settings on master and retried, still doesn't work. t-squared
I'm getting the same error. Tried everything you tried as far as master/slave primary/secondary.Also removed all drives except DVD & IDE HDD, still same error. Hope someone helps us quick. I solved this by downloading a USB update from apple, referenced here. Boot into safe mode (-x after hitting F8 when starting), install the file, and reboot. I can't say if it will help your issues, but it worked for me. I had some usb error flashing at me when I first installed 10.4.8, so that gave me an idea of where to look. XP1
This is happening before the OS install. The DVD has the problem saying "Still waiting for root device," not after the install. XP1
Like I said before, my problem starts with the DVD and not the install. I cannot install the DVD because it will not pass the "Still waiting for root device." Aztekgod
This is how I solve that problem, I dont know if applies to everyone but this what I did, before I use to have Nero to burn the image.... I downloaded and burned like 3 times thinking that it was the image or something... Then on the same image I decided to try Alcohol 120% to burn it and there it was, fixed, worked like a charm, now all I use is Alcohol never seen that error since I stop using Nero... bobgorilla
Trying to install using the new JaS DVD on my girlfriend's Celeron D 330 HP box. We get the "still waiting for root device" message booting it normally, and booting with "mach_kernel.mifki -v" just causes it to reboot. Both drives are on the primary IDE channel, with the HD set to master and the optical drive set to slave via jumpers, cable and bios. It's all parallel-ata. We had this message with the older JaS 10.4.6 installer too. Information which may or may not be useful: I burned the DVDs from my powerbook to a DVD-R using Disk Utility. The IDE controller is reported as a "HP Snapper" by PC Wizard. The chipset is SiS 661FX, which is on the 10.4.6 HCL as working fine. The bus "speed" is 133Mhz. Should I set it manually at boot? OoOoOoO
For intel chips ich3, ich4, ich5, ich6 you may want to replace only this file /System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext/Contents/Info.plist with older one. it will add older ICH support. The next problem is that my hard drive is not being reconized and I can't install it anywhere! This is how I solve that problem, I dont know if applies to everyone but this what I did, before I use to have Nero to burn the image.... Tried
why don;t you try installing on someone elses com and see if the problem crops up. if it does its the dvd problem then. if notm then its your com problem. probably something to do with your ide settings or your dvd drive. you could try using another dvd drive... Eleo
I have the same problem. People keep telling me to use various procedures during installation but I don't get to install anything.. Here's what happens: 1. I put the DVD (JaS's 10.4.8 iso) in the master DVD drive. 2. I reboot 3. If I don't enter "-v" I get the gray apple screen; after a while I get the circle-with-a-slash-through it like in XP1's post. If I did use "-v" I eventually get "Still waiting for root device." Again, this is BEFORE ANYTHING IS INSTALLED. I have already made a partition for OS X and it is FAT32 and it is a primary partition. I even tried setting it as the active partition before trying to install. Nothing has worked so far. I only have one encloser and I cannot use both devices on it at the same time. We've only got one USB enclosure and it's just for HDs. I guess We /could/ put the optical drive in it... The 10.4.6 disc burned in Disk Utility that gave us this same problem worked just fine on my friend's home-built Pentium D rig, so I'm going to suggest it's not the disc but some function of the machine it's booting to. helgansven
Same issue here getting the "Still waiting for root device" error. Also noticed near the beginning of the text.... ERROR: Couldn't read XML property list for multikext archive entry 135. XML Parse Error: OSUnserializeXML: syntax error near line 1. Tried burning the image using Nero, Alcohol and DVD Power Burner and using all different speed settings, but get the same error every time (used about 15 DVDs so far). Eleo
I'd like to note that I see a similar error regarding XML, the same one that helgansven sees. But I don't know if it's actually related to the problem or not. My guess was that it was not, as the "Still waiting for root device" error seems more like a hardware problem. But I know next to nothing about this stuff, so I have no idea. Eleo
You can always install via vmware. Although I did that, and can't seem to get OS X to work natively...
