guiyoforward
Hi there, I'm getting a Dell laptop and I know sound won't work. The creative alternative is like $50 (Soundblaster Live! 24bit USB1.1), too much for a cheap {censored} like me. I found the following CHEAP usb adapter: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-280B&cpc=SCH Anyone tried this? The next one is a cheap $23 SIIG card, and there are other alternatives: http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=SND Any cheap alternatives that anyone tried withthe latest 10.4.8? In the 10.4.6 the TURTLE BEACH Audio Advantage Micro says it works... http://www.amazon.com/TURTLE-BEACH-Audio-A...o/dp/B0002ICGDY Same for: Plantronics DSP-400 Digitally-Enhanced USB Foldable Stereo Headset http://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-DSP-400-...e/dp/B00005A9AU

twtmc
I've got one ordered. Turns out the guy didn't ship it till today because I didn't specify a color, so I won't have it for another 2 weeks or so . I would be happy to say how it goes once I get it, but I have no doubt that it will work. Also, they are a lot cheaper on ebay if you can order from there. guiyoforward
imacen, thanks for the info. did you actually try it? it works fine? I was about to order a turtle thing until I saw the following message... ...twtmc, why are you sure it will work? I had the same impression but no justification - they are all basically soundblaster clones? thanks!
twtmc
...twtmc, why are you sure it will work? I had the same impression but no justification - they are all basically soundblaster clones? So far I have yet to here of one not working on a mac nor a pc. From what I have read, the only things that don't work on macs with them is the 3d sound softwear that comes with it. Hence my lack of doubt.
iMäcen
I haven't tried it, but OldSkoolGamer in the thread I posted has.
3on
I'm using a usb external audio card and I have Line in and out. No installation no hack just plug and listen. I'm really happy with it, and it cost only about 20 bukcs !
twtmc
Ok, well I got it today, and low and behold it has worked very excellently! I am much pleased. I highly suggest you buy one from ebay, or, if you are in Canada, The Source has one that is similar for about $10.
Stadsport
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-280B&cat=GDT This one claims to work in OS X and it's $7.99. Found it whilst looking for some way to use a USB hub for all devices I "dock" to my macbook, including my speakers.
twtmc
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-280B&cat=GDTThat's the exact one I have. On ebay, the price was $0.99 before shipping.
guiyoforward
silly question, but I guess there is no way (without hardware mod) to make usb cards work with internal laptop speakers, right?
rogabean
silly question, but I guess there is no way (without hardware mod) to make usb cards work with internal laptop speakers, right? You are correct. You'd need a wire going from the USB device to your speakers. That's gonna require a mod... and it wouldnt prolly be a pretty mod. I use my studio headphones... so it's not a big deal to me... not many times I'd need the actual sound to come from the speakers on a laptop, but I"m still working on it

Thade
I just bought a SB Live! External from Creative on eBay for 29.99. A little pricey compared to the dongles, but the quality is great and many options for output including optical (untested) http://cgi.ebay.com/Creative-Sound-Blaster...oQQcmdZViewItem
SkyZ
hey guy, this is my first post, and I can claim that ALL cheap cheap USB sound card will work!!! I tried 3 different no-brand-name and they are work!!!
SkyZ
Sorry I forgot to mention the OS version: I'm using JaS 10.4.8 reseed and no need to use SoundBlaster USB patch, just plug in and works~~~ It doesn't show in System Profiler, though. Alcyone
How would one get these to work? I ordered one from geeks.com, but when I plug it in, OSX doesn't detect it. I'm running 10.4.7 jas. Any ideas?
SkyZ
I'm not sure, but maybe you need 10.4.8 (kernel 8.8.1)..... Also, System Profiler won't show anything, you getta go to System Preference-->Sound, if it works for you, then you'll find USB Audio there.
