XP virus

I've found Norton to be quite good FWIW but, then again, I use the complete Norton SystemWorks package, not just NAV. If you have the name of the "virus" then browsing the Norton website might give you more specific instructions about what to do.

I would also consider using AdAware and SpyBot.

I use Symantec AV (Norton) and I'm generally happy with it, except that it does slow things down perceptibly sometimes.

I'd be very suspicious of a window that says your PC (cousin's PC) is infected by a virus. Where is the window coming from? Virii don't normally pop stuff up to tell you you're infected :police: and if the message is from your AV, if it detects it, it should be able to at least quarantine it. If the message is from your firewall telling you that this 'virus' is trying to communicate, that's more likely, but I'm inclined to think that it's a spyware or trojan trick to try to get you to buy, install or otherwise fart around with your system to 'get rid' of a bogus infection. Quite a few recent trojans are simply marketing ploys to get you to buy some form of removal software.

If Norton can't find or remove it, run a bunch of adware removers (Adaware, Spybot as Drval says) and other virus checkers to see if they can find anything. My bet is that Adaware will find it and remove it. Let us know how you get on.

free: avast, adaware se, and spybot s&d. use all of those together and you should be good... way better than symantic... but for pay (i am an extremely high risk user, i know good av...) is Kaspersky, hands down, and it has anti hacker... but the av is THE best. no question. good luck, i usually wipe the hdd when i get a virus... (no fun... but its the best way to get ur windows install running as fast as possible, it erases the sludge too...)

I ran into a similar virus bot. It was taking control of my mouse and kept opening up IE which I never use unless I have to. Avast did pick it up but was unable to delete it. I finally used Webroot SpySweeper which picked it up and deleted it. You might need to boot back up in Safemode. You can also go online and run Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/. They're getting tougher and harder to get rid of. As far as NAV it really is a resource hog and I haven't used it in years.
