Synthology
Greetings all, It seems as though the 10.4.8 open source release has caused a bit of buzz lately. It so happens that a couple of good members of the community are closing in on the new source. Now lets show support and optimism by hypothetically assuming complete success on the level of a near MAC clone. We have to be specific at this point, being that SSE2, for example, is pre-mature at the current Kernel progress. Let's assume that we got a working kernel, an intel motherboard (945-975)and a Core 2 Duo MACBOX. If indeed the Kernel is hacked to succession, where do we stand on Graphics Cards, Dual Monitors (non-GMA900-950), and driver support for otherwise EFI supported hardware? Also, how will this help the EFI effort over at the X-Labs? I understand that this shows promise for Leopard running on our boxes in the future. But that's a totally different beast altogether. I'm hoping that everyone will keep their questions in the now. 10.4.8 Kernel related and within the SSE3 area of play. Not to leave out our good buddies on the SSE2 side, however, times change and so must we. One obstacle at a time - first working kernel, the rest later. My questions are aimed at the knowledgable few that understand the possibilities of the recent kernel hack and its future. Your knowledge and wisdom to enlighten is most appreciated. aberracus
mm not intended to drive away the thread but you can make your lan onboard to work. look at my sig... For your questions, i will say that a Kernel 10.4.8 working will let us to have more working frameworks, right now the 10.4.8 combo release is really stripped down. Probably it will permit us to start working with nvidia cards. I dont know if EFI project gets any better with it, anyway, i wil not hurt them. JaS
it is stripped down for sse2 do to sse3 instructions in the new frameworks , not sse3 . Just wanted to point that out. Not that we need it, but sometimes we get what we wish for. Synthology
So it has been done. Now the questions may begin. The greatest concern for most users, will ATI and Nvidia cards work? I suppose after the widespread beta test goes through, we will not know for sure. New frameworks, updates and security patches....all this will now work. Let the questions rain here. Rammjet
So it has been done. Now the questions may begin. The greatest concern for most users, will ATI and Nvidia cards work? They still need to be properly intitialized by EFI and that nut hasn't been cracked yet. Synthology
They still need to be properly intitialized by EFI and that nut hasn't been cracked yet. Perhaps that's next in line. One step at a time and so far it looks good. Thanks for the heads up. murcielago585
does anybody know if semthex's progress has got him to the efi issue yet Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30787-1048-kernel-questions/#findComment-215911 Share on other sites
Rammjet
does anybody know if semthex's progress has got him to the efi issue yet EFI is a separate issue from the kernel. EFI is the equivalent to BIOS on an Intel Mac, only more. mifki
Ok, im still working on EFI, but at VERY VERY slow rate, i have had some new ideas about it so i am going to try those out when i get the time to do so, but otherwise we still need more devs, and by devs i mean talented devs, not "beta" testers lol Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30787-1048-kernel-questions/#findComment-215941 Share on other sites
murcielago585
well good luck to you then Kiko, i'd help if i had the knowledge. it would be such a relief to finally see my 7600GT with Quartz Extreme and Core image supported. blkblt
I've tried the GMA950 drivers from 10.4.8 with the new 10.4.8 kernel and I'm sad to say that while it worked, it stuck me at 1600x1200 with no resolution options (on my 1900x1200 display). I replaced some of the kexts from the GMA900 package and it helped, but not completely. /blkblt Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30787-1048-kernel-questions/#findComment-215949 Share on other sites

Rammjet
how is this done with the x1600? It's not really. Very few users of x1600 can get DVI to work. And no one can get dual monitors with spanning. This is all dependent on the initialization from EFI. murcielago585
sorry for all the questions, i feel like an idiot and i've been following osx on a pc for a while now. but would it be possible to crack or patch these kexts to bypass the efi check? is this how it's done for the kernel? It's not a check by the kext that is the problem. EFI performs the function of BIOS and passes the configuration of the hardware to the OS. It initializes the video configuration so the kexts can properly do their job. Without the EFI running on Hackintosh, the video does not have the info it needs to function properly. So we either need a way to run EFI on our machines that can't run EFI or we need a way to emulate EFI so the work that needs to be done gets done. murcielago585
i'm runnign vista right now and I don't think I have efi on my mb. i think vista has both efi and traditional bios I read something a while ago and an XP media center user said he found a "Boot" folder hidden in his home directory that included instructions for an efi boot. I don;t know if this was legit but apparently a gateway media center pc has an efi chip on the mb. again, don't knwo if its legit and i can;t remember where i saw this Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30787-1048-kernel-questions/#findComment-216011 Share on other sites

Synthology
it seems as though the new Kernel puts us up to speed, and for those of us who need dual DVI monitors, the speed ends with a nice smack against a brick wall. No doubt that the new kernel gives us hope for leopard, but EFI seems to be the true issue on video. I think it will be a matter of short time before kiko and the boys over at the X-Labs get it going. Honestly though, if there are any true devs out there, the professors at the Lab need you. EFI is of high priority and the missing link toward a true MAC clone. We got this close with the Kernel, the flow of good energy must continue.
