You're right, we have to verify testimonies - which we do by not relying on one persons version - hence we have 4 gospels, numerous letters to churches regarding doctrine written by different people and we can compare new testement accounts to old testiment prophecy etc. I would never pick a single verse from the bible and use it to justify a particular belief, but if there are a number of concurring verses then i think it's safe. I could get into a theological explanation of how Jesus is demostrated as being both fully God and fully human but this topic isn't really the place.

by "we" i assume you mean the early Christians in 125AD and subsequently the bishops around 325AD who got together reviewed all the texts available and then made a judgement call on what was in and what was out of the New Testament. Not to mention the various transaltion errors from Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek and sometimes all three and then some. Oh and of course we also have those bishops and monks that thought it wise to help the texts along a bit and add their own versions of events - as well as remove others, as proven by various copies of letters and documents being highly inconsistent when compared. And don't get me started on early Christianity taking over other religions festival days and places of worship. A man matching Jesus's description was born in the month of April, so why then do we celebrate his birthday on December 25th (winter solstice Julian calendar)? May be something to do with the Roman god Mithras.

My votes for the Flying Spaghetti Monster :D . But If I have to choose a real faith, it would be atheism as I believe if there was a godly being of some kind, it would have stepped in and clean up the mess that free will made. Just my :) .

Im glad youre so confident of that...jk

Honestly, WE can change things, it makes me mad that nobody sees that, its thinking like all of you thats going to lead to this world getting f***ed up, the "its too late, better not even try" mentality, when it is obviously not too late. Wheres the kids protesting on the street? Wheres the national guard putting them down, causing a national ruckus? Wheres the fighting spirit? Its gone, and it makes me sad.

I blame the 80s for that, that evil decade  . Seriously though I think part of the problem is that people have become afraid to stand up against the man. With the US war on terror and everything else thats come of it. protesting and fighting spirit has been crushed out of the fear of being detained and killed for no reason. The media and the governments has us stuck in group think mode, where rocking the boat is very bad. First step to change the world is to remove the Bush Administration and put some better people in White House. Like my favorite person for US president, Oprah Winfrey. You know she would kick things off into the right direction. Second, disband and reform the UN so it can use military action if needed, and get more countries involved and reform the security council so theres less resolution watering down and more action to rogue people.

Yeah, I suppose youre right, I just dont feel the pain up here in Washington State, luckily, Bush is pretty unpopular here and rarely sets foot here, good riddance. We really do need to get that regime (way of thinking) out of office, our country is both moving backwards in terms of world view, and reason (logical thought). and moving in a bad direction in terms of freedom AND security (despite what Bush supporters may think {if everybody hates us, our security really IS going to be a problem, if nobody hates us, you dont need a huge security force}).

The way I see it, were strong now, so we CAN step on other people, but we SHOULDNT because when were weak, and need help (which will happen someday), nobody will come to help us, in fact they may put the very knife to our throats. Just my thoughts

she'd do a good job, never gonna happen though

Oh bull! She'd turn her state of the Union into a talk show, talk to foreign leaders about how menapause sucks, {censored} to the world in press conferences about overweight women, and screw America into the ground. She'd do an absolutely horrible job. Even Hillary could do better than her, and that's saying something.

Speaking of a black woman becoming president. It now looks like it might be a toss up between in 2008 between a black man and a white woman.

Yeah, you seem to be pretty close-minded when it comes to people...Stereotypical {censored}...

I'm still reading everything but I'm gonna just blab some stuff..... usual thing I do;)

anyway personly I believe in a god and I believe god cannot be defined and thats that pretty much....

going about atheism I could be wrong but I believe its rather not caring if theres a god or not rather then not believing in a god.... but I've been told otherwise so many times it don't matter....

Quran which I am currently reading a translation of says to my understands some people will understand religion others won't and its just the way it is pretty much:P(remember to my understanding)

killbot1000, you mentioned some gobbly gook about believing bible is all metaphor's and all and then went on if all things have to be created yada yada then who created god and so on..... which is fine.... and said that christianity wasn't even a religion yada yada something about some prince I think who set the true christianity pretty much..... note: if your gonna believe one thing is false, you must also be open to suspect that the other might be false too.... were you there? note: I'm not a christian, infact I kinda dislike the way alot of christians follow their beliefs but not for me to judge;P after all I'm not god;) or all that smart:)

if you want reasons to denote religion I got tones but at same I got tones to prove religion too but what does it matter if god exists would he want me to be hurting others in gods name to prove that I was doing good:P

besides that I believe in a good part of religions its not the beliefs/intent that are at fault but rather the ones who have the most power, where you got power you got corruption(yeah I realize you can say god has corruption if god has power:P, but who said god was good or bad?)

again yes I know religions are not as solid as they may seem but again usually due to the main group and not the religion or even the followers... you really don't have to go far to realize this.... but its just like with US gov and rest of the govs of the world..... I don't understand with Bush how people who didn't even vote for em originally suddenly take his side then on top denote the fact that its still to this date unclear if he even won the first elections he was in;P... but what can be done......

about science ever since I was I dunno I can't remember I loved science but news can't even tell me the weather:P, you get me? one doctor discovered that he could cure a illness caused by an overgrown heart by cutting the heart down to proper size and these are the mysteries that science I question if will ever solve;P....

lots of other stuff that science claims to know but doesn't even prove;P is science even factual?:thumbsdown_anim: and nothing is 100% so how can you say that it only has one answer?

other thing..... the relation of a persons personality and attitude vs. how long they will live, how fast they cure, etc

or a animal.... forgot where it was I heard about a crocodile that was wild captured it healed a wound that zoo crocodile's died from.....

well I guess in the end what I'm trying to say is one who's skeptical about religion can in turn have another who is skeptical about science or even history notes;P.... after all the bible and holy books are looked upon as history books to their believers....

heck for all we know time cube is right which I'm disapointed isn't listed:P(some might say that is isn't a religion but you know damn rights it is;) I got proof:P its all in this thing I bought from local dollar store, all who don't believe this are stupid and destined to hell and should be shot;), you get the idea)

proof against evolution is apparently the question about why are there still monkeys and apes.... considering something not sure...... something like that.........

I'll spread some more {censored} maybe tomorrow or something:P

Asking why there are still monkeys and apes is like asking why if there are cats, dogs still exist...

A common misconception about evolution is that it makes claims that humans descended from apes... which no proponent of natural evolution states. Humans are similar to apes for a simple reason; Humans and Apes have a common ancestor, and not very far back. Just as cats and dogs have a common ancestor (not very far back). The common ancestor of humans and apes isnt the same common ancestor of dogs and cats. Dogs, cats, humans and apes have a common ancestor, just much further back. Just as Humans, Dogs, Apes, E. coli backteria and Maple Trees have a common ancestor. (really really really far back). If you dont believe that, that's okay. But that's one of the premises of organic evolution (and in fact, all biological science). There is a common descent, and it's fairly well established.

If someone wants to say that all animals have a common descent, but that humans were created specially, I know of little evidence to disprove this statement. But I know of no evidence that would prove it either.

Atheism is defined by dictionary.com as:

1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.

2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

Agnostic is defined by dictionary.com as:

1. a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

2. a person who denies or doubts the possibility of ultimate knowledge in some area of study.

–adjective 3. of or pertaining to agnostics or agnosticism.

4. asserting the uncertainty of all claims to knowledge.

An athiest believes god doesnt exist, just as a thiest believes god does. (faith-based)

An agnostic doesnt believe that god either exists or doesnt, because an agnostic doesnt believe in holding belief where evidence cannot be obtained.

I'm an agnostic in most things. I'm an athiest as well. I believe God doesnt exist.

Quran which I am currently reading a translation of says to my understands some people will understand religion others won't and its just the way it is pretty much:P(remember to my understanding)

Don’t have time to read it all but came across this and had to reply.

The meaning behind it that I could keep going on about Islam to all of you until i die. Those who do not search for Islam (a true religion - whatever that may be) will never find it because Allah will never guide them. Those who search will as they will then be guided by Allah.

So some will never be Muslims no matter what you (Muslims) do and other will be regardless of what you (Muslims) do - because Allah will help them be guided

Basically it isn't saying everyone doesn't have a chance if becoming Muslim. Everyone does... if they look for truth.

I'm no major expert in Islam (i have to say). But anything else like this you come across while reading the translation please share your thoughts. And inshallah I wise you all the best.

(PS: my best friend read the Quran and became muslim a little over a year ago. he couldn't stop reading it. And this is the same guy who a few years back told me he could/would never become muslim.)

EDIT:

Humans are similar to apes for a simple reason; Humans and Apes have a common ancestor, and not very far back. Just as cats and dogs have a common ancestor (not very far back).

You and me have a common ancestor - Adam. He's a fair bit back I think.

Well, if you believe in Adam, which I dont

I should have phrased what I was saying better. The person was asking a specific question about the theory of evolution. "If evolution is true, then why are their still apes and monkeys?" "For the same reason why there are still cats and dogs. And for the same reason there are still caucasians and asiatics. Among caucasians there are nordics, aryans, semites, latins, etc" "I, being a nordic caucasian, am more closely related (have a closer common ancestor) to AcePlayer (who, I would assume is of arab or some other semitic subgroup), than either of us is to Kim Jong Ill (who is asiatic)"

The fact that, biologically speaking, semitic people emerged before nordic caucasians did, doesnt mean that nordic caucasians should have somehow supplanted them. Nor should a turkey's existence necessarily preclude that of a chicken. The same can be said of humans. Monkey's didnt turn into humans, Monkey's are just closer related to humans than chickens are.

IF you believe in organic evolution. If you dont, then why does it matter?

EDIT: According to new earth creationists, the earth is less than 10,000 years old. It's been at least 15,000 years since nordic caucasians and people of the semitic subgroup split. Modern humans have been in existence for at least 150,000 years. Cats and Dogs split around 3 million years ago. Reptiles and Avians some 50 million years ago. Mammals and Reptiles, some 60 million years ago. My last common ancestor with a chicken is a lot longer ago than Adam is purported to be. No matter how you look at it.

"just because somebody believes in something doesn't make it true."

^^^^words of wisdom right here^^^^^^

in direct relation with "just cause somebody says something doesn't make it true".... the beauty in it, is thats where everyone is left to choose.... and is why when I say {censored} I admit it might be {censored} and try not go for or against anything....

but then again remember in {censored} alot can grow;P

Belief is, by definition, non-factual. Therefore it can never have it's truth or falsehood determined in any real sense.

Yep, I think that no religion hit it on the head but if there is anything there will be some of every religion (or most....) in the "greater being" or "creator" or something..... the bible was written by humans, a long long time after the stuff happened, im sure oral tradition does not keep a story 100% true or accurate by any means, witch is what the bible was written from.... that and later in the name of the apostles (usually a really long time after they died.... witch was common at the time to gain credibility in your writing.... ) so yea, and aceplayer, im sure that the Quran is not 100% accurate or correct... because there is human error involved in all of this.... but i am also sure that even if both books are wrong you cant lose anything by following their teachings, they are filled with good knowledge and rules that are essential to any society or organization so utter pandemonium and chaos do not soon ensue.... I think that it would be quite sensible that even if you did not believe in the gods or the after life, the knowledge is still quite useful...
