bofors
The Dell Dimension 4700 has an Intel Graphic Media Accelerator (GMA) 900 and the Intel 915G northbridge: http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,117516,00.asp I would assume that it has an Intel ICH6 southbridge and with the exception of the Ethernet controller that it is effectively the same as Apple's Developer Kit motherboard. This means it is perfect for running OSx86 and guess what, it is on sale now. For $479 after $100 rebate, you get a Dell Dimension 4700 with a HyperThreaded Pentium 520, 2.8 GHz, 256 MB of DDR2 400 (single channel), 40GB SATA drive, CD-ROM, keyboard, mouse and a 19" Dell E193FP Flat Panel! http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/f...s=04&l=en&s=bsd http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/con...oc=3d47w3&s=bsd This is great if you need a complete system, but be wary of the build-to-order options, most of these look like less than great deals, and this may not ship for 9 days after you order. Otherwise, you can certainly do better by builidng a system with a Pentium 630 and going with at least 1 GB of either DDR2 533 or DDR 400 dual channel RAM for speed. Also note that OSx86 may not support the stock PS/2 keyboard and mouse, so you may need an adapter here which is available from the likes of Tiger Direct for $10: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...2&sku=B131-8244 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/195-dell-dev-kit-special/ Share on other sites

bofors
It looks like the PS/2 keyboard is supported by OSx86: http://www.concretesurf.co.nz/osx86/viewtopic.php?t=126 The PS/2 mouse may be another story. Now given that there is like no chance that Apple hardware will ever be using PS/2 keyboards and the Dev. Kit uses a regular USB Apple keyboard, why do think Apple would bother including a PS/2 keyboard driver with OSx86? Kind of makes me go: hmm... JE
Looks rather nice. I can't buy a 19" LCD that cheap. If I had $500 I'd buy it and dump this machine. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/195-dell-dev-kit-special/#findComment-1603 Share on other sites
natefrogg
ps2 mouse and keyboard worked for me for a short moment, soon after either osx froze or the ps2 devices stopped responding usb --> ps2 converter resolved the issue Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/195-dell-dev-kit-special/#findComment-1607 Share on other sites
Jetta VR6 6Spd
Is SATA supported yet? That can be the only drawback I see. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/195-dell-dev-kit-special/#findComment-1841 Share on other sites

SeBsZ
So if I buy this PC I can use Mac Os X 86 with Rosetta and run all available mac applications (PPC and X86) with Quartz Accelerated stuff and have sound as well as internet access? Just like to have a confirmation on that, if I decide to buy it. p3n5t3r
How do you mean, SATA's not supported? I have a SATA disk installed in my computer and Mac x86 OS recognizes it without a problem I can even listen all of my mp3s from that disk. I run the system from the single IDE channel I got (it's acctually meant for CD/DVD roms) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/195-dell-dev-kit-special/#findComment-1972 Share on other sites
mangandini
I have this PC, Dell 4700 But with PS2 Mouse and Keyboard, and I have the image of the original Developer Kit DVD, without patches, so I can't install Tiger on my computer. Somebody know where they are? Thank you! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/195-dell-dev-kit-special/#findComment-5150 Share on other sites

It also reconigizes my USB Creative Sound Blaster Extigy, but audio playback is a bit skippy.
