i have installed vista beta 2 but it only runs for 14 days before you can't use it. is there away to activate it so i can use for ever with out having to re-install it all the time.

You can turn off (disable) all the registration services, and it won't do that.

And how would i do that?

Turn off the "Software Licensing" and "SL UI Notification" services.

Start -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management. Its under "Services" or something. Disable those two dis-services. :D

Thanks for the tip. :)

Vista is easy to hack. I bet when it comes out, another worm like 'code red' or 'nimda' will hit. :hysterical:

actually, in the latest beta build 5472, by turning off those two services, it also kills ReadyBoost which allows for better system performance. In other words, the WHOLE OS runs like complete {censored} and you control panels disappears. This is because they made ReadyBoost dependent on the Software Licensing service. I haven't started to mess around yet but my guess would be that we can "unlink" the dependencies of these two services which will lead to us being able to kill those two services with your OS still perfectly in tact. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

**EDIT

well, after 7 hours of messing with regedit I finally got fustrated, looked up another serial number on google, called the activation hotline and M$ activated it for me, ha.

you can use a patch (PM me) to modify a dll which tells vista when you login that you've activated. i'm not sure if it still works but i tried it in 5308 and it worked perfectly along with another program called vista_activator.exe.

yeah, I think that may just be with older builds. I myself had no luck with cracks on build 5472. Every time I ran one my system would act crazy and I would lose my control panel.

I really think the best thing to do is search around for a serial that was given out for the beta 2 public release and use that.

Once you find a public beta 2 release key just follow these steps (before you start make sure you disconnect from the internet):

You can change your product key by going to Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System and at the bottom where it tells you how many days are left before m$ drives you crazy there is an option that says Change product key. Input the key (you can copy and paste) and if it's no good it will tell you. But, if it's good, it will say "updating key this will take a moment". From here it will try to auto activate, but alas, you were smart and disconnected prior the changing the key.

Now, select "show me other registration options" when vista barks at you for not being connected to the internet. Then, select "automated phone activation". This will pull up an activation screen with a toll free number. You MUST keep this activation screen up at all times as you will need the info on it.

So, you call the 866 number and hear that god awful windows log on sound and then this chipper automated lady picks up. She asks you some obvious questions and then she'll ask for you to input your installation id. Just follow the phone directions.

After the long, pain-in-the-a$$ process of inputting an insane amount of numbers she will say "hold on while I verify" or something along those lines. Most likely she will come back and say "I can not verify your information, let me transfer you to a customer care agent".

At this point you should run like hell and set fire to your box as to destroy all evidence. Just kidding, of course.

Just have some balls and stay on the line, the CIA is not going to bust down your door if all fails.

After a little while your customer care rep will take the line (he/she will probably be from India because we Americans love to outsource [Go Bush!]). He/she will ask you for your installation number (yes, again! I know, it's a pain). Read him or her your installation number, tell them that they have a lovely, soothing voice and that you are willing to bet money that they are very beautiful/handsome. If they question anything just say that you downloaded the public beta a while back and never got around to installing. Play dumb if you have to.

At this point, he/she SHOULD say "ok, I have a confirmation number for you" (which is the point where I got disconnected, oops! now worries, I called back and did it again)

Input the LONGGGG string of numbers that he/she gives you and take it down for your records too. This is because these serials are good for all updates as well so once you get a good serial activated then when the RC1, RC2, and RC564 (because they still haven't got it right) you can re-use the serial and activation number.

After all that hit "next" it will verify then Finish.

And that's it, no hacks, no cracks, no fu*king up your system. Plain and simple.

Enjoy and GoodLuck!
