Ive been looking at the MacBook Pro 15" since the unibody came out, I really want a 15" MacBook, but im wondering if its worth waiting for a potential Quad Core / Higher res screen (some 15" pc laptops have 1920x1200 res screens) or even a Mobile ATI HD36xx graphics update, and Ive also heard the iMac is getting a visual update e.g. more rounded aluminium body, the macbooks may get an update like this too..

Anyyyyyway.. I would like to know what other people think, i could probably wait 6-8 months max before I cave in and buy whatevers available! unless there was news at that time that something special was looming.

Not sure about the price...

I7 cpu are very expensive.

I just bought a macbookpro 13" & i definitly think it s the best buy right now.

I checked other company like dell or HP, their laptop are more expensive for the same spec ( and they sucks )

Depend what you wanna do with the laptop.

I use mine mostly at work and for some audio production when i m not at home, it does the job just fine.

I guess it is better to wait (esp. then you are not in hurry as it is). It is a well known rule that PC do progress in performance aprox. every 1/2 year (6m). So after, say 6m it may be more powerful then it is now (though I don't think it will be a gigantic difference).

So if you need it right now - buy it. If not wait for the next big upgrade.

Sir, you may want to hold yourself.

I'm arguably in the same pickle.

As it stands, I'm holding.

For myself, I'm using a 3yr old hp laptop, which is dope, running 1.6 core 2 duo / 2gb ram,

& I built a core 2 duo e5200, running at 3.15 ghz (oc'd in a closet), with a dope monitor in my other room. Its running leopard.

There's this program I use called synergy, which allows me to use my mac keyboard on my laptop just by moving the mouse between each monitor. You may want to find apps to make yourself more productive & enjoyable.

There are a billion things that'll improve your experience, but buying a macbook pro right now won't be if you already have some sort of computer / hackintosh.

These macbooks don't compete well against that which has been out in the past three years, & I'll elaborate if you'd like.

But essentially, the next gen of macbooks, which may drop as early as september 010, may have:

- usb 3.0

- quad - core processors

- blu ray drive

+ / - miscellaneous features.

What do you want the macbook for?

If you want it's features & will not cry about having a laptop no one wants in two years, you may decide to make the purchase, & won't regret it. My lappy is still amazing, & i love xp.

& that buyers guide is cool. I factored it into my decision.

If macbooks adopt 1/3 features I mentioned, along with a 'sleeker look', longer battery, or anything else, it'll be worth the wait. hands down.

btw, every september you get a free 'current ipod touch' with your laptop if you buy from the apple store, which is as simple as entering a student id number. Anyway, that bonus may give you incentive to buy it then. any questions?

I just bought a refurbished MBP 15"

http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FB470?mco=MTA4MzEzMjI

It's the "Late 2008" unibody model, that still has the removable battery. Also, it's the cheapest one that has a GeForce 9600+9400, since the Mid-2009 entry-level 15" model switched to only a 9400.

I also got a free upgrade to 4GB of RAM :(.

id like to thank everybody for the replies, its not about what ive got atm, im looking for a laptop - definately a mac, i think im going to wait a while, the only major upgrade im waiting for is quad core or a higher res screen on the 15" models. its going to replace my hack, and getting a ps3 for games and bluray.

but i want a macbook that will be good for 3-4 yrs, i do amature music creation/video editing, so more cores would be great!

dont try to suggest cheaper pc's / hacks with more power, im sick of the problems that come with these options - its time for a mac only environment for me, and a mobile one at that.

thanks again, and any more info would be great, i suppose my question still stands... get the latest refined top spec machine and hope it lasts, or wait and get the next release - one of the first off te line?

coolio i'd wait.

i'd say core 2 duo tech is towards it's end stretches for 'current technology', since my (already) 3yr old laptop has a pretty good core 2 duo. Mine is 1.6, these macbook pros are 2.5.

stop & think.

"could I happily produce videos & music on the 15" macbook pro for the next while?"

A macbook pro will always advance, & within the next two years after the next release, you'll probably see another release. So, you won't have the newest version either. What if they get a quad core but something else that's cool?

You might be mad, or want it.

Maybe, you could:

a) Look up the resale value of macbook pros on craigslist, forums, and ebay.

See if you could sell it if you decide to later on, & get some value back. Then, you might save towards the 'new' one.

- People in developing countries will adopt your laptop, and be happy with the value (features they're getting for the price they paid). Lots don't buy the latest macbook.

B) Test out the macbook. Buy one when you're ready to, & use it for 11 days. There's usually a 14-day money back guarantee at places like best buy, & perhaps the apple store.

Play around with it. Test the features, & compute with it. Learn with it. Learn how to use it. If you see yourself enjoying it, then make the decision about keeping it.

It'll last if you make it.

The skill is in the artist, yourself. How you use anything to make something beautiful.

Don't let a machine define you. 2.5ghz/quard-core/nine/cores/18gbofRAM amounts to nothing when the person behind the machine is nothing. Enjoy yourself with what you have.

The next macbook pros will have quad cores though, if I had to fashion a guess.

They're not going to release a 4.0 ghz laptop when the array of technology for quad core processors are here.

The only time you've seen core 2 duos go beyond 3.06 ghz has been with aftermarket overclocking.

Quad cores will be the next step.

i think its best to wait. Because most likely Apple will have an event in October maybe in 2 weeks.

They had it last year in October 14: http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/live-fr...otebooks-event/

So id wait. And in fact I am waiting. Im getting financing and when new macbooks/macs become announced and available im buying.

Simply put: wait for 2 weeks or so.
