Yeah..You have to build a box for this...Dont even bother with an amd setup....

Don't even bother with an AMD setup eh? Why not? It seems to be working just great with mine. All of the new AMD chips have SSE3 so I don't see why people shouldn't bother with them. The only things I've got problems with in OS X x86 are non-cpu related.

I use it as main OS, going back to windows just for gaming.

But there some problems that some of you maybe help me.

Everythimg works fine, but sometimes the system just reboot or give me a kernel panic with a garbaged display in the back. Like when I'm updating my iPod video it just reboot. If I'm converting something with iDVD or Handbrake, boom there goes the system. Despite that, all seems fine.

I tried every single version, all of them gave the same problem. Currently I'm using JAS 10.4.6 only with sse3 going.

My system specs:

Intel P4 3,4 650 (Prescot)

Intel 915PBLL Mainboard

LG GSA-4163B DVD Burner

ATI X300 SE (QE and Ci working)

Dual 512 MB memory sticks

2 Sata HDs

Samsung HD120IJ (Windows)

Seagate ST3120026AS (Mac OS X)

If somebody came with a solution to this I'll be very thankfull.

Regards

Leo

Honestly bro, that sounds more like something hardware related....ever try a stress test in xp (assuming xp is running stable too)? Anyways, that sounds more like a bad stick of ram, or a card thats not pushed in all the way, or somethings not quite seated or grounded fully or something...might want to check its guts out thouroughly.

Because if you want a system with a chipset that is 100% supported, then you will have to go with an Intel system, period. Onboard sound: check, fully supported video card: check, SATA and PATA both working: check. Just face facts, Apple has gone to great lengths to make sure that AMD chipsets are not supported very well, and no amount of tweaking or patching is going to make them as well supported as an Intel 915 or 945 chipset machine.

I was using it as my Main OS, but just went back to Windows XP, here is my reasons:

-Mac OS X is hacked and have to deal with updating os the manually if that can be done (using 10.4.4 still), even pirated Windows I hear works better and system updates.

-Some apps like Garage band dont output any sound, mouse tearing, etc. Meaining Macs lose their appeal when 5% of hardware work on macs, it makes the it just works untrue but with only 5% of hardware.

-Limited apps, besides Apple having less apps than Windows XP, even less work on Intel. Macs are about hassle free use. Having to deal with rosetta, slow apps etc kills the Mac dream. On Windows XP every app works, something Intel macs cant say today or PowerPC with their limited apps.

-Windows XP it just works, updates, printer, drivers, apps, tons of apps, hardware. EVERYTHING works. Viruses and such dont matter if you know what your doing. I have never gotten one trojan or virus. (Ironic my only virus that destroyed my data was in os 8.1 when a MACOSRUMORS trojan wiped my drive any of you guys remember that one. I have never told anyone that, the irony, but it was my personal fault not the OS)

So I will probably buy a Macbook (since it will probably run Vista) but waiting for august to see what Leopard brings.

I have used Vista and the MAC OS GUI warm fuzzy feeling thing is felt with Vista's Aero Desktop. Thinking of going full Vista when it comes out and not getting another mac (of course i will still have my Hackintosh for running iAPPS and others if i need). After Vista Mac OS wont really matter unless Apple makes some great new stuff in Leopard, Vista is a copy os OS X Tiger. For most people, the Every app is supported and hardware choices, with GREAT GUI, Vista is it for 95% of people on the planet. I mean is it silly to have 5 choices in Macs computes, when there are 1000's in PC's? Hell those ferrari Laptops look nice. If people say its all about the MAC OS, well Linux runs on PC's and makes it even cheaper.

I am sorry to say but for every Linux geek that is now buying a Mac there are ten people that leave the mac... how many mac users in south america? 10, 100 max? people dont have the money for a cheap PC and there going to buy a MAC? hahaha unless you dont live in the US, you dont see the difficulty in buying a mac.( I live in US by the way)

Macs lose thier apeal when you have to worry about apps not working on Mac OS X, and apps is all its about. The Mac OS is a great OS, but apps is what we use, not OS's.

Remember also that for 99.7% of the world, Price is the most important thing and Apple has never competed in that area which is why Windows rules the world and will continue unless free Linux takes it away. Apple dosent stand a chance.

Sorry for going off, but as a mac user, i am a switcher going to (not windows or Linux) but to Cheap hardware and thousands of hardware choices and options, with a PC that can work as a hakintosh if i ever need a few iApps.

Windows CRASHES!!! MAC OS RULEZZZZ!!!!

I'm not having anyproblems with mac, just sound that was difficult to install, but the others stuffs man works smooth, and OFFICE you have M$ OFFICE 2004.

You are not talking about APPS and YES ABOUT GAMES!

GAMES ??? BUY A PS2/3 XBOX...

mmmmm

incredible, so vista is like osx ? how? its slow not really good looking, and it is compatible with millions of viruses too.

I have all apps that i TRULLY need, and much more really on mac, and some are hte best and cant be found on Windows (liek the PRO apps), games?, o yes you can have a prtition with vista to play games, or play them in OSX.

and my hardwarea is absoluteley compatible, NO mouse tearing, no artifacts, perfect sound out of garage band...

Rosseta apps works with enough speed (Photoshop in my rig works perfect)

what where u using? a Sinclair Z1?

I have now tried it on 3 computers..osx x86 is {censored}.

I'd like to know what you guys do with it... Surf?

I'm comparing this to my SX 3 (legit) box, it needs to do that or this is a toy. I.e....use of pci slots..us of ANY usb device...use of SOUND.

this thing is a joke to be honest.

Its no joke to me. When I first installed the OS, it was hard to get things working. I have a very limited experience with Linux, which helps in knowing Mac somewhat.

I was unable to use my graphics card, soundcard, or network card at first. After a bit of tinkering and with the help of these forums, I was able to get the Graphics card working pretty quickly with the Macvidia drivers (I have an Nvidia 6800 Ultra).

The next thing on my list was sound. After reading on these boards that my card (Audigy 2Zs) was not compatible, I bought a nice USB soundcard that worked great out of the box.

Next was my onboard network card, a Marvell Yukon 88E8050. For the time being, I was using a Linksys USB adapter, but that was annoying. Finally I found some posts on it and was able to get it to work. From there, I moved onto DVD playback. With a specially compiled version of VLC, I can now watch DVD's perfectly on the Mac OS X.

In short, I now have everything a working system would. It runs flawlessly. And I was able to get all of the apps I used in Windows/Linux. IM program, Firefox, Thunderbird, TeamSpeak...all kinds of stuff.

If I had to pick a main OS, it would defintiley be PCLinux OS. Its an awesome Linux Distro. You should all try it out

But I love having the Mac OS on my PC. anything that increases the abilities of my PC....I'm all for it. And having the Mac OS on my PC does just that :D

I consider OS X to be at best another Linux distro. It's good for refurbishing old computers and giving them a second lease on life. Compared to WINXP, OS X boots up faster, gets you to a working desktop much faster, is better organized, looks better, and has some interesting tools not available on XP. OF course, XP does have better support all around, and I still do keep around a WinXP machine.

OSX86 is the main OS on my pc. WIN XP is only used for backup the OSX partition and for streaming to my X360.

I used, and still using OSX on my mini G4 the last 10 month and it rocks...

Now, OSX is on my PC: Sound, dual-desktop, ... everything works perfekt.

  • 2 months later...

I kicked windows xp as my main os out, mac os is so much nicer. Since v 10.1 i dreamed of using it, my former guitar player from my second last band had an Dual G4, so my interest into mac os was awaked. If i could afford an imac, i would buy one because today i can run windows on them, if i need it for gaming or Visual Studio e.g.

PS: Hello Steve Jobs! If i can buy mac os x for my pc, tell me, i'll buy it :thumbsdown_anim::P

beta testing osx86 on a old dell laptop pros are. it thinks my processor is faster than it really is, usb 1 works smoother than it does in xpenis. I can remote to all my winboxes and servers no problem. I am able to control me osx86 box using Vnc which is a plus I dont care for ARD unless it interfaces between windows and macs which it dont. I havent installed timbuk2 on the mac86 box I have to search for the installer. a downfall is i cant use my slim canoscan usb scanner with it. Doesnt install properly 2 middle fingers up.

the ability to update the built in crapache webserver and install php for osx86 2 middle fingers up. I thought it would be simple in the end its better off to install apache2triad on a winblows box and be done with it. another downfall is the resolution 1024 X 768 kinda dull. and in XP i can set it to 1280 X 1024. The refresh rate Blows on X86 its like i can flip pages faster than it can refresh the desktop lol. oh and the last note is being able to boot OSX86 as a stand alone os without the need of a stupid boot cd. thats why im not completely sold on X86 till i can boot freely without having to worry abut if UBcd is in the drive or not would be a real plus.

Thats my 50 cents.

OSX is really awesome :P But I still use my XP as a main OS coz my OSX still give me performance issue (it's so slow after opening some application). If my OSX can give me no problem, I think I'll use it as my main OS.

*Downloading 10.4.7 (hope it'll fix my problem :P)*

I use osx86 as my main OS but i dual boot into windows when i want to play a game or something, the only reason why i don't have a real mac right now is because they are to expensive. When i get my mac i'm throwing windows ou completely i will but windows back on here and sail it for 500 bucks probably and never use windows again if i have to :(

I do. Cons? Well I have no Firewire but that is due to me not having it, no OSX86. DVD Playback is not right, but that is due to my porcessor, not OSX86. I get DVD Playback in VLC though. I can do what I want to other than that. I have copied movies, played games, etc etc in OSX86. I am happy. I haven't booted Windows in about a month.
