Mebster
To extract the footage of a camcorder I need to use firewire but my computer doesn't have any firewire ports. So I was considering of buying a firewire (maybe a firewire/usb combo) card of ebay. Can I get any PCI firewire card, as I would do for my pc's XP side or do I have to consider something else so that the OSX side also recognises it? The reason I ask is because I have an old firewire/usb combo card which doesn't work well. In Windows none of the firewire ports work but some of the USB port do (so I’m guessing the card is just broken). But in OSX nothing seems to work. It does read the card (in systems – or whatever OSX calls it) but doesn't want to work with it it seems. Any help would be great. Wayland
Get a firewire card with Texas Instrument chips on it. Stick with ADS, they work for both and have universal support... rollfaster
I had a belkin fireconnect that worked fine. Ditched it because the firewire on my board works and I ditched one of my fw devices. Mebster
The footage I’m going to extract of the camcorder is going to be most likely a one off. And so probably would never need the firewire card after that (I know, what a waste). For this reason I would like to keep cost as low as possible and so am looking to buy it from eBay. The thing is I can't find any Texas Instrument or any ADS cards as some guys have recommended clearly. Only found 2 Belkin ones (they say they support macs also). I know rollfaster said his Belkin firewire worked fine but for some reason I’m not totally satisfied. Maybe it’s nothing. But before I go ahead and probably buy it has anyone had a Belkin firewire card in particular or from any other manufacture that hasn't worked? Or does anyone know of a reason not to buy the Belkin firewire cards? This is just so I have a rough idea as to what I might be getting myself into. Thanks for the help all. Baliw
I'm using Intel 915G with onboard firewire when i installed OSX 10.4.1 to 10.4.3 , firewire didn't work. So i bought a card with Ti chips that did not work and also bought a card with via chipset that also did not work. So gave up pretty much. But when upgraded to 10.4.4 up to 10.4.6 lo and behold the on board firewire works and also the Ti chips and via one too. And Belkin should work for you. Good luck. Dynamite
Thanks for the tips. I bought the 3-port firewire PCI card from belkin (the only one they have, the other one is combo FW/USB) and it works awersome. Just plug it in and enjoy. You can't make a mistake, belkin only sells one PCI firewire-only card. Y-my-R
I got a Adaptec FireConnect 4300 which I believe has a TI chipset, but it doesn't work. Shows up in System Profiler, but doesn't recognize anything I connect to it. I want to use an M-Audio ProjectMix with it, but no luck so far. mysticwhiskey
Mine uses a VIA VT6302 chip, and is the same as this one. Using it on 10.4.6 with an MAudio Firewire Solo audio interface - no problems at all.
