Short answer: Nope.

Longer answer: But you can get pretty close. Check out omni's work at http://omni.starchaser.org. For my money, the X1600 or X1800 is a good bet, as they're very close to what is being used in real intel macs.

Hi,

is there an ATI Graphics Card that I can buy that works perfectly out of the box

  • without patching
  • without leaving mouse trails
  • that can be put into the PCI-Express slot
  • that supports both 2d and 3d acceleration

?

Thanks a lot!

As Munky already wrote. I think none of the available cards work 100% but that's due to some items missing or incomplete in OS X86. The only snags you will encounter with a Core Image and Quartz Extreme enabled card is mouse tearing (when using the scoll wheel) and broken pointer when returning to the desktop from a full screen OpenGl game. I don't know if users with NVidia cards and the MacVidia drivers encounter the same problems.

I currently use an STLabs X600pro card and this works out o/t box with both 10.4.3 and 10.4.5. My other PC has an AIW 9800SE and that too works with 10.4.5 (never tried 10.4.3 on that system). Of course the AIW parts don't work but QE and CI are enabled. Oddly enough the system with X600 feels much faster in desktop usage then the AGP 9800(SE) though both systems are similar. Although in Windows the system with 9800SE feels faster... weird.

I also tried a Connect 3D X800 and had to use the Koverg-patch. After that CI and QE where enabled (with the affordmentioned mouse tearing but snappy desktop). Unfortunatly that card didn't feel significantly faster in OSX86 (unlike in Windows) so I put my X600pro back in.

to summarize

without patching

Radeon 9800SE and 9800 work (AGP)

X600 and X600pro (PCI-e)

with Koverg patch

X800 (PCI-e)
