I guess technically is possible... but most probably not. I only read about one guy's hdd which begun to make strange noises during running OSx86, then broke down. It wasn't new, so maybe the cause of breaking wasn't OSx86 but usage.

I accidentaly erased my partitions (twice) using Disk Utility but after that I was able to format the hdd and use it again, without any problems.

I knew it! they r tryin 2 steal me I need 2 make justice :gun: :censored2: :police:

I can almost guarentee you 95% or more that your hard drive is perfectly fine. They're just either trying to trick you or they're training was limited and they were only showed how to 'restore' a hard drive. not how to low level, format, clean house on the mbr, del tree, reinstal from a REAL WinXP pro SP2 [pre-slipstreamed] DVD/CD-R, etc... If you want, get it back from them, then PM me for my MSN address assuming you have more then one machine to get onto internet with then I will walk you through the whole process including troubleshooting any potential obstacles that might be encountered. etc. Formating and installing O/S's is my most favourite subject. In general I'm obsessed with Operating Systems/GUI's so chances are MORE then likley I can help you fix your problem! But first I'd give HP {censored} and call them retards first.

I doubt the hard drive is screwed. Most likely just needs to be fully formatted, partitioned and reinstalled.

What have you tried?

If you boot off the OS X disk and partition (destructive) the drive what happens?

I sent it to HP Care Center, but they say some HDD sectors are damaged and that I need a new one, any suggestions?

If they already have it... not too many. Was it under warranty?

It's *possible* there was physical damage to the drive. Happens all the time, but I can tell you OS X had nothing to do with it.

no warranty, and can u xplain me the damage u r talkin about?

Hard drives get damaged sectors all the time...well, not daily or anything (although everything is cirumstantial). Newer drives are fairly resiliant and can go through quite a bit without busting up a sector, but still, something like a BSOD, or a power outage...basically if the HDD is writing to a sector and instantly is shut off for some reason, then there is a chance that the sector was damaged...or if it's bumped really hard while writing, same deal.

Thats why alot of the older iPods and Nomads have horribly shot to hell hard drives in them, people don't realize how fragile they can be and they'll take em out jogging or something stupid without extra precautions.

The best thing you can do, at least for Windows, is run a scan disk on your drive after anything may have happened to it....its generally just a good idea to run a full scan disk once a month regardless of scenario. XP is a lot smarter and more capable of finding bad sectors and recovering data in realtime than the older windows were...I swear windows 98 would purposely damage your drive for fun, and then it could never recover the data either!

Not sure what the best remedy is in OSX, I'm guessing that that MAY be what the First Aid is for in Disk Utility, but I'm new to OSX, so not really sure.

speaking of hp care center i once had the same problem like 6 years ago, bad sectors in the hdd. so i spent 3 housr telling the customer service rep exactly what was wrong with it, i knew what it was the whole time. so i sent the WHOLE comp. and then 1.5 months go by and then i get it back in the mail. fire that puppy up, and bam! 20 gigs less and its got someones elses's file and junk on the relacement hdd! they didnt wipe it or anything. too bad nothing was useful. but that my story of hp customer care service. :P

Just wanted to pass this information along, and a dead hard drive thread is good a place as any. I had a HD just not too long ago that showed red 'B's all over the place on the full surface scan. (Bad sectors)

Anyway, I usually would have tossed it, but I was curious so I went hunting. I found a program called Hard Disk Renenerator (or maybe just disk regenerator). I can't remember how it goes exactly, but I remember installing it, making a floppy and whatnot, boot from the floppy and it re-aligns the magnetic fields on the platters.

I can say that I have been using this HD for 6 months now without an issue one. I have formatted, zeroed, and repartitioned the drive about 20 times since then and it still (yesterday) breezes through the dos scandisk with no bad sectors.

Sorry to babble, but I wanted to put this on a hard drive thread so maybe it can help someone else.
