FloatingFatMan
Has anyone noticed insane battery usage running on their laptops? I hvae OSX running, but only with the 'platform=X86PC' command, and no audio. Otherwise all works sweet as a nut... Decided to run it mobile for a bit today and approx 50 minutes after I turned it on, the thing powered down with a completely drained battery! It was fully charged when I turned it on! The battery is usually for for around 2.5 hours on a full charge. Wouldn't have been so bad if I had a battery meter, but the x86pc switch kinda kills that, and it won't boot without it Oh, running on: EiSystem 4411 laptop (PC World own brand) Intel Celeron 2.4ghz CPU (SSE2 only) 512mb RAM 40gb HD CD-RW Intel Extreme Graphics (drivers error, but I get Quartz Extreme!) AC97 audio on ICH4 (not working) Internal LAN (working) USB2 (working) Internal modem (not working) This is with the deadmoo image running natively, and Maxxus' 0.41 patches. Nice and stable... Andy4life
My battery usually lasts about 2 and a half hours in XP aswell... in osx... it lasts about an hour or an hour and a half.... i watch the % go down in the battery meter... and it drops like a percent every 4 minutes or something... its terrible... even when i use the profiles.. and put things on like "low performance" etc.. Fugu
You might want to set "Processor Performance" to 'Automatic' or 'Reduced' for Battery. I am pretty sure its set to 'Highest' as standard! Stern
You might want to try setting the option "platform=ACPI|X86PC" as opposed to "platform=X86PC". That might help, but i dunno. FloatingFatMan
Unfortunately, the laptop won't boot unless I specify the X86PC option, so there's no option in the Energy Saver for processor performance... Still, even without using power saving, it sucks the battery dry a lot quicker than XP does with power saving disabled... tkc
be prepared when u set it to other power profiles. when i first installed, i tried that while i was running on battery and the system hanged and didn't respond. subsequently, after a forced reboot, i had to specify x86pc mode or i couldn't boot up. in the end i had to connect the power supply to boot up w/o specifying anything. cyrana
Well, you'd sort of have to have the ACPI platform to be running if you wanted any sort of useful powermanagement I think (I know you can't in your case). And then, don't forget they've not really tried to optimise the x86 side for power saving yet. And finally, if you dont have a graphics card that uses QE (and CI), your system will churn even more due to higher CPU usage. Eventually it'll have great battery use, but I bet that won't be until Apple gets ready to release their x86 laptops. FloatingFatMan
And finally, if you dont have a graphics card that uses QE (and CI), your system will churn even more due to higher CPU usage. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, it's Intel Extreme graphics, and whilst is seems to load with generic drivers at 1024x768x32bit, I DO get the full QE, and it runs very snappy, and overall CPU usage is, believe it or not, under 5% idle! Even when I apply a load, it seems to stay at a fairly low load... I wasn't expecting perfection, but I did think under an hour was a touch silly! cyrana
Yeah no arguments from me, I agree. Just no optimisations have been done for this all yet, unfortunately. Tuxedo Jack
It may also be Spotlight going nuts and indexing your disk, thus sucking power for the HD. canguro
men, this is off topic, but i think i´ve had the solution for ur sound card... isn´t a SoundMax Digital Audio by chance? cuz i have that, in ICH4, and doesn´t work until i`ve edited AppleAC97AudioIntelICH.kext (wich is inside contents of AppleAC97Audio.kext). I´ve found that the vendors and device id was backwards... so i reverted (in the file was: 0x24c58086 and i changed to 0x808624c5 and, magically, it works =) with stereo, mic in, etc... i can talk to my pc now =P and hear it... i hope u find this useful. I thought it was AC97, but what the hell.. I'm going to try that! Can't get any worse than it not working can it? Thanks for the suggestion! I'll report back once I've tried it (which will be in a few hours, meh.. work ) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1536-battery-usage-on-a-laptop/#findComment-10796 Share on other sites
FloatingFatMan
Well... I no longer get the errors from the AC97 kext on startup, but there's still no sound device Nice try though!
