Im running...

P4 3.2 Ghz prescott(with sse3) socket 478

Asrock P4dual-915GL with built in GMA900 (CI and QE working)

Well ive done some testing of Logic Express on osx86 under rosetta. Im a sound engineer and have done a degree in Music tech. I use logic 5.5.1 on the PC and since apple bought emagic ive wanted to get a mac to use the latest versions.

Im happy to say that it is definately usable.

First of all, I was using the built-in motherboard audio (realtek ac850 or somfink).

The quality is not that great compared with my motu 828 mk2 firewire soundcard which so far doesn't work under osx86(this will hopefully soon change as motu give good support for osx. Their main software is osx only so I expect them to be first out with some drivers.I wouldnt be surprised if they already had one of apple's official dev kits). The sample rate is fixed at 48khz as 44.1k is not allowed. Ive got a couple of sata drives right next to the mobo and whenever there is disk activity, i hear a lot of noise coming out of the audio (although this happens os wide and is not a logic problem) so ill try moving them further away to see if this makes a difference.

I loaded up a few platinum reverbs and when I got to 8 or so, the computer didnt yet show any sign of packing up. I tried a lot of plugins and they all seems to work fine and respond quickly to any adjustments I made. The only plugin that I had a problem with was the guitar amp plugin. This caused the dreaded 'overload could not process required data in time' message (i tried increasing the buffer size to the largest setting but it didn't help). I have not yet tried any Audiounit plugins.

Ok, on to the audio instruments. These worked pretty much flawlessly. All of the included garageband instruments are great bread and butter sounds. When you choose one, it takes a few seconds to load in the samples and then 'boom' it works. All of the software synths work as they should.

The latency is surprisingly brilliant. Its pretty much instant. Althought this is from pressing the matrix editor keyboard with a mouse. I havnt yet found any way to get a hardware midi input for osx86.

I tried playing a few audio tracks from disk. I loaded up a song i recorded using logic 5 on the PC(windows). It has about 10 tracks in it. They were all recorded at 44.1 so they played fast in logic 7 because of the 48k fixed sample rate. I thought that it might struggle with it because everything is going through rosetta. But NO!!!

I pressed space to play and instantly it all started playing (albeit chipmunk stylee).

Im gonna play with it more over the next few days and test its limitations. Hope this helps anyone who wants to use logic.

Oh and one more thing.... I installed the 7.0.0 version and it didn't work. I then tried the 7.1 version, didnt work. After trying the 7.0.1 version everything was fine. I then installed the garageband loops from 7.1(just unclick the logic app in the customize section).

odd ..thing ...i have logic audio 7.1 installed and it works great but ...dont you need an asio complient sound card to record and play back...thats my problem my soundcard is  not ASIO...how are you getting around this

Well in the audio>audio hardware and drivers section, the only option i see is coreaudio. Asio doesnt really exist in OSX anymore. Coreaudio is the equivelent that apples bult into osx. I assume that in the dev kit, because theyve made the intel southbridge (ICH5, ICH6 or whatever) the standard hardware, they wouldv'e made it work with coreaudio (like the built in audio in proper macs).

Ive done a bit of looking around the web, and there are some pro multichannel soundcards that work natively with osx using apples 'Applefwaudio.kext'. These cards are all based on a audio board called BEBOB.

So far these cards are Edirol FA-101, Edirol FA-66, presonus firepod and some high end apogee cards.

As a side note, if you go into Audio and midi setup in utilities, and go into aggegrate devices, i was able to select 2-in 6-out for my p4dual-915GL (havnt tested yet tho.its quite wierd since that mobo is meant to be 8-channel)

Hi there,

I need a bit of advice. I've just installed Logic Express 7.1.0 and it wont run. It seams to start the initialization process then as soon as it gets to "Initializing menu" all I get is the spinning ball.

I've read in an earlier post that dan the soundman couldn't get 7.1 to work. Is this the same fault.

someone added this to the hardware working @ wiki board but...from the way he states it he has not personally varified it.....does anyone actully have one of these 2 soundcards working...if you do please write it down here............................................................................

................................... Edirol FA-101 (apparently works natively with coreaudio under apple's built in applefwaudio.kext as it is based on the BEBOB boartd)I have not personally verified this - Dan the Soundman

Edirol FA-66 (same as FA-101 above and Presonus Firepod)

thanks

Hey,

everyone with the same problem: Do not copy the logic folder in the /Library/Application Support/ folder on

your harddisk. open the finder, click on your House symbol on the left and then select the /Library/Application

Support/ folder on the right. It is another location!!!

After this, it may not hang anymore, because it finds something to load :)

p.s. if you have AC97, you can enable surround channels by fooling around with the AuLab Application. In

its preferences, you can select 6 chans, instead of stereo.

You can find this ONLY, if you installed darwin. it is located in the Developer/applications/Audio/ folder. It

comes with about 70 efx and other nice goodies.

i copied the folder to the place mentioned. but nothing changed.

thanks for your help

esde

it works now. seems i had the wrong installation files.

the crack here also works as you all mentioned as "downgrade" to logic express.

no multipressor, no impulse response verb, no exs.

any one of you managed to get the xs key running??

it didn't work on my system.

good luck

exactly how do you get Logic to work?

i tried to understand what xtraa was saying but i couldnt quite follow it.

it hangs on the splash screen.

PPC apps like Garageband 2(even better than my iMac G5), iTunes 6, QT 7 and Painter 9 all work great

I'm running OSX86, a pentium 4 Processor ,intel 915 G chipset, 512mgs corsair ram, and a legit copy of Logic 7.1 that I use on my iMac G5 and Powerbook.

Do I need to use Logic 7.0

thanks

Hi,

sorry here is a better explanation (i hope) :P for what I was trying to say:

You have to copy the Logic folder in your user/Library/application/support foder, not in the library folder that is located in your root directory.

But anyway, I have a problem, too. OSX does detect my usb midi keyboard but logic doesn't. i don't know

what I missed here. I also have no experience in logic, because I was only working with cubase SX so far.

bin running logic express 7.1 .. works great and performs very good on my onboard ac97.

install a borrowed logic pro 7.1 .. runs smooth aswell!!

seems like i can finaly move on from my logic 5.51 !!

on a Ibm t42, maxxuss 5.c

:D

Cool .. so you the first one got pro runnign back on a pc .. nice !

but does anybody tried just the node on a x86 ? if would be rocking to get some real extra power for 200 bucks !

thanks !

I just wished I could get mine to work. GarageBand works fine, but Logic Express 7.1.0 does not work for me. I've tried just about everyway I can think of, If anyone can give me a hand on some step by step instructions, I would greatly appreciate it.
