Hello!! I have about $4000 AUD to spend on a Gaming Rig. I want some advice on what I should get. Should I:

Get a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and overclock it to 3.0GHz

4GB Ram..

2x ATI HD 4870 X2 GDDR5

1TB HDD

*Advise me a Motherboard*

Antec 900/1200

or..

Mac Pro

Boot Camp, Windows XP

Crysis

Which will go better? I just want a awesome gaming rig.... My friends say that the Mac Pro w/ Boot Camp would be better because of the processors. I am going to put 1 ATI HD 4870 X2 in there anyways.

If you know a better build, please put it here and the price in AUD!

I also need to know a good Mobo and a good PSU.

Thanks!

A MacPro would be a total waste for gaming.

And please, Windows XP with twin dual core Xeons... for gaming? That's like a terrible joke. Games won't take advantage of dual SERVER processors- heck, I'm not even sure Windows XP itself will.

If your focus is gaming, I'd say buy a GAMING system where you will get the maximum performance bang for your buck. If you need a workstation, IE: for video editing, Photoshop, graphics and audio work, then get the MacPro.

Four grand is quite a healthy budget. If you want to build a hack here are my suggestions:

GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz

OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (x2 8GB Total)

EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ SSC Edition

Pioneer 20X DVD±R SATA DVR-216DBK

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 7200 RPM SATA

Antec Sonata III

Thermaltake Toughpower 850W

D-Link DBT-120 USB 2.0 Wireless USB Bluetooth Adapter

D-Link DWA-552 (Wireless N)

= 2800 AUD, leaving plenty of budget for a Samsung 245T display or two. Or you could go to an Intel Extreme processor.

I think we have the same tastes MaaseyRacer :)

Yeah, I'm not concentrating on Mac at the moment. I just want to know if anyone has a good build I should get.

MaaseyRacer... Can I susbstitute an ATI HD 4870 X2 in there? I might buy another one when they go down in price. Put it in crossfire and it'll pwn Crysis like roadkill.

Ok..

I have a basic build in mind.

Asus P5Q Deluxe WiFi/AP

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.0GHz

2GB DDR3-1066

HIS Ati Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB@GDDR5

Samsung 750GB x2 in RAID 0

Corsair HX-1000w Power Supply

Antec Nine Hundred

=1984 AUD Please get back to me

If you just want to play, stick to a dual core, get a new E0 stepping 8400 and any p45 mainboard, 4GB kit Gskill DDR2 1066 RAM and a decent heatsink. Overclock the processor to 4 gHz or if you like to 4,5 gHz, games dont use the quadcores...

Buy a 32 gig SSD as bootdrive and a Samsung F1 for storage, this really makes a difference...
