Good News for who want to build a cheaper Leopard Hackintosh

Sounds like you're not very bright. Can't blame that on the hardware. First of all, I've said repeatedly to use iATKOS 5i, not 4, not Kalyway (which is more than a year old at this point). I gave a step by step set of choices to make in the iATKOS 5i installer, those only apply to that distro, that version. Nothing else. So hell yeah you are having problems, you didn't follow basic instructions that guarantee success.

Partitioning drives is old school...get multiple drives and install each OS on its own drive with no other drives plugged in. Once all your OS's are loaded plug in all your drives and use the F10 key on POST to choose your desired boot device. As far as what to pick with iAtkos 5 - go back a couple of pages - its well documented.

Not exactly useful advice if someone's using a small case that doesn't have room for multiple drives. There's nothing wrong with partitioning, even when you have room for multiple drives. But using logical partitions is often a pain in the ass. If you're going to use MBR then stick with primary partitions. With MBR partitioning you get up to four primary partitions per drive and that ought to be enough for most situations. Using logical ones inside a primary one can often be a real headache later when it comes to multi-boot and data recovery.

get the error "intel PXE" that is supposed to be a "wake on lan" one....even with ethernet and wake on lan disabled and last in the boot list

Thank you very much for your instructions. I successfully installed iAtkos5 with unaclockers setting. Sleep doesn't work though. And grafics are stuck at 1024x768, but thats no problem for me, since restart works. I downloaded all updates.

If I try to connect to my hackintosh from my macbook via "screen sharing" or "desktop management" (I tried both) the hackintosh crashes and needs hard reset.

 

Also if I try to connect from a winXP pc.

 

It doesn't matter if I try built in remote control or tightvnc or jolly vnc...

 

Does anybody have experience with this?

I just enable "screen sharing" on the hackintosh, and then connect to it over the network and click the "share screen" button (using another Mac).. Works great for me.

This is all I use my machine for. Initially, I had the same issue you're having because I figured that I didn't need to install the video drivers since I wasn't connecting a monitor. But screen sharing won't work (machine crashes on connect) unless you install the correct video drivers. Could that be the issue?

 

Also, if the system does not detect a display, the display performance in screen sharing is kind of strange (it works, but the resolution can't be changed, desktop background disappears, animations don't work, etc.). You either need to boot the system with a monitor connected (disconnecting it after OS X boots is fine), or fake out the OS into thinking a monitor is connected.

 

To fake it out, you just need to put in a few jumpers on the VGA port. Initially, I did this by just sticking some pieces of wire directly into the port connector on the mainboard, but you have to remove them any time you want to connect a monitor. I ended up making an adapter out of a male DB15 connector from Radioshack that allows me to quickly remove and replace the jumpers. How ever you accomplish it, just connect the pins together as shown below. Be careful though, if you hook up the wrong two, you could short out the video card.

I really wonder which display drivers you used. I tried the GMA a, GMA b and the Efi for intel. I keep having crashes.

 

Do I need to combine the drivers?

I managed to get ScreenSharing working with the iPC distro. I'll post settings later. Sleep works too. Grafics selectable up to 1024x768. ScreenSharing works from PC and Mac

 

BUT

 

I have trouble sharing the files. I enabled the file sharing and I can see all the shared drives from my windows PC.

The weird thing is that my SATA Drives which are connected via a PCISata controller show up as removable device and those I can't see from my MacBook.

 

Do you understand that? I can access the so called "removable" SATA drives on the hackintosh server from my WindowsXP laptop, but NOT from my MacBook Pro.

 

My MacBook Pro, in the finder. Can only see the Fixed shared drives.

 

Really weird. Any suggestions?

The only probléme is how to connect it to my TV. I have and Apple Adpateur DVI-Svideo; my the board has an VGA out put.

Yes, it works. And as for performance.. It takes more to bog the machine down.. Just like any dual core machine. It's not FASTER per say than single, it's just able to do more than one thing at a time, so it doesn't bog down as soon when you have a lot going on. Probably not too helpful with a media center machine.. But it's got the port you need.

If you use unaclockers settings, don't use "intel EFI" for grafics driver. Select both GMA950 Drivers instead. Then you will have resolutions available. But if you upgrade to 10.5.6 it will be gone. I don't know how to save those kexts.

 

Has anybody managed to share removable devices over the network to other macs? In my case they don't show up.

 

 

Here another working setup for all interested, using iPC 10.5.6 ppf5 distro. with sleep.

When asked for Location go to Disk Utility (Menu Bar)

Select you Drive from the list and click on the partitions tab

create your Partition(s) OSx Journaled and click on the option button - select GUID

Apply and exit

 

Customize, select these options only:

9.3.0 Sleep Kernel (if you want sleep to work)

 

Video Driver: Intel GMA950

Chipset Driver: Intel ICHx Driver

AudioDriver: ALC662

EthernetDriver: Realtec 1000

 

Fixes and patches:

Shutdown/restart fix

Patch DSDT

AppleSMBIOS EFI

 

 

Applications:

OSx86 Utility

NTFS 3-G +MacFuse

 

Hit done, skip the DVD check,

 

Wait,

 

Keep the DVD in the drive. (If DVD its not inserted you will get a "No Boot Device" Error from the BIOS.)

 

Wait for it to start up

 

Setup the OS X stuff (language, personal details) and Boot into OS X

 

 

Lets fix the "no boot device" error:

In OS X go to "applications" -> "OSx86 Utitlities" Start the OSx86 Utility

Click on Install EFI / Run FDISK

Select your OS Partition

Chose EFI To install: Chameleon EFI

Click Install EFI

Click OK, enter password click OK

 

Remove the DVD from the Drive and restart

 

Sleep works!

Display Resolutions can be selected up to 1024x768 (maybe that because my screen can't do more than that - maybe somebody could confirm that there is more possible.

 

 

I don't know if you can update.

It's not that I don't know how - I just find it such a pain in the a$$...I don't know how many time I've had to help people with boot loader issues.

 

I just feel that using the BIOS to boot multiple HDs is much more elegant and better suited to a system that is likely going to get "played" with a lot.

 

For the record I have two 2.5" drives and on SSD in my MITX case (This size: http://mini-itx.com/store/?c=3#2699). I had plenty of room for the airport card as well...

I used Kalyway Leopard 10.5.2.

The installation was perfect and after reboot, the system started with sound even with QE/CI enabled (presentation video and music worked).

Everything work out of the box! Incredible!

 

I have D945GCLF too, but I cannot use the GMA 950 with QE/CI. Kalyway 10.5.2, iDeneb, iAtkos, etc. fail. External 950 kexts, fail. What should I choose in customized install?

Hey everybody. I just thought I would report back. I originally used Kalyway 10.5.2 for my machine but today I decided to try getting it all the way to 10.5.7 and I have had success.

 

Here is my machine setup:

 

Intel D945GCLF

2 GB Kingston "Value" RAM

Quanta TDR-085 Slim DVD-R Drive

Toshiba 120 GB 2.5 Notebook SATA Drive

Western Digital 1 TB 3.5 SATA Desktop Drive

Generic USB Bluetooth Dongle

Aopen S150 Case

Adesso WKB-4000US Wireless Keyboard/Touchpad Combo

 

The machine is set up in a closet with all my home audio stuff and I'm running a 25' VGA cable through the wall up over a hallway and down through another wall to a 42" Vizio plasma TV I have hanging in my living room. So I use the TV as the monitor. But the machine is not used much to play video on the TV though. Its actually mainly just a file server for my AppleTV.

 

Anyways, too much info probably but..

 

Here is the process I used to set up the machine.

• Boot from IATKOS 5i DVD
  
• Once in setup, I used Disk Utility to partition & format the Toshiba drive (I used MBR, GUID may work too I don't know. I had it set up as MBR from my old Kalyway install so figured I would try leaving it MBR)
  
• I clicked through the setup screens until the customize button came up. I left everything as it was EXCEPT I chose GMA950 (a & & RTL 1000 LAN driver. Thats it I didn't change anything else.
  
• After the whole install process was done it restarted and upon boot it hung up because I forgot to take out the DVD. So make sure to take out the DVD before it reboots. I took out the DVD and held down the power button till the machine turned off. Then after 2 seconds I hit the power button again and it booted to Leopard.
  
• Next I went to "drive name"/system/library/extensions. I copied "AppleIntelIntegratedFrameBuffer.kext", "AppleIntelGMA950.kext" and "IOGraphicsFamily.kext" and pasted them on the desktop. Then I went to http://store.psystar.com/opensource/openhaltrestart and downloaded the openhaltrestart.kext.
  
• Then I downloaded a program called kexthelper and used it to install the openhaltrestart.kext (then I restarted)
  
• Then I used Software Update under the Apple menu and took every update it offered (which included the 10.5.7 update) The machine restarted twice before booting back to Leopard. I don't know if it was on purpose or not. It ended up working in the end so who cares, right?
  
• Then after it booted back into Leopard, I used kexthelper to install the three kexts that I copied to the desktop earlier to get all the video resolutions back (restart again)
  
• Then I installed all my softwares of choice (Vuze, Little Snitch, Perian, iFlicks, iLife 09', Apple Remote Desktop, etc, etc..) Did the Apple Software Update again to make sure I had everything Apple wanted to throw at me.
  
• DONE! 10.5.7 Hackintosh (too bad its only an Atom board, but it's serving its purpose for me)
  

Everything is working except for mic in which I don't need anyway. Sleep works, shutdown works, restart works, all monitor resolutions work, onboard network card works, no freezing or hanging (including screen sharing). I didn't test time machine but I don't plan to use it on this machine anyway.

Hi, I've used iAtkos v7 to install Leo on this board, all works fine, audio, usb, lan, I've also updated to 10.5.8 without problem, but if I try to activate hyperthreading, I obtain a Kernel Panic when Leo start, could anyone help me to solve this problem?

 

I've just another request, if I put my machine in sleep mode, HD shut down, but monitor still on, how to get Sleep mode working?

u.......hhhh, i finish my many days installation. I install iAtkos v7, iDened 10.5.6 and 10.5.7 from internal DVD, all of them worked, but with some bugs. After 3 or 4 days installation i chose iDeneb 10.5.7 with Chameleon as boot loader. After many times of installation i have a problem with network. Internet and remote desktop worked but not a hdd sharing I'm was very unhappy, it was one of main goals (build remote management torrent-file-movie sever).

 

Today I'm push button update to 10.5.8, lan and resolution of server is down!
