So i'm saving up for a new iMac. Currently i plan on getting the 2.8ghz 24", but since i can't afford it until september, i'm tempted to just wait it out until the next refresh arrives in 2009, and here are the many reason why:

-the intel Nehalem chip is coming out in late 2008...its up to 50% faster than the current Pryuen(ya, however you spell that) and by the time the new 09 imacs arrive, you're sure to have the option of an amazing Nehamel

-possible chance of a Blu-ray drive option, since HD DVD is almost beta-maxed out

-USB 3 is coming out next year, and it'd be nice to have a pc/mac that supports it

-better,faster DDR3 RAM will be the standard and has a nice increase in performance over the current DDR2

-Hopefully the 09 iMacs will include a nice LED display instead of the current one

-and of course memory and HDD's will be better and cheaper by then

So should i go ahead and buy a current 2008 iMac in september(mid-cycle)...or wait for the possible much improved 2009 iMac's to arrive?

your thoughts and suggestions please :(

It's up to you, you summarized it perfectly. It depends on whether you're prepared to wait or not. Nehalem certainly is worth waiting for, but the current iMacs are awesome and certainly good enough.

thanks....i feel like i should wait, but i really want one now, anybody think there might be a price cut when they mac the post-wwdc updates?

Always buy the best computer you can afford. Because that way you will be able to use it longer.

So if you wait, you might have to pay more, but you will also get a computer that will last you longer. Unless your computer is like an iMac G3, I'd say wait.

Well just so that you know, Intel are planning to release their high-end server CPU based on Nehalem later this year, whereas the Desktop and Notebook versions (which the iMac will use), are only planned to be released in the 2nd Quarter of 2009, which is a year from now. (source) A long time to wait...So maybe the best time to buy an iMac is indeed now...

ya, i'm pretty sure thats what i'm going to do

I'm in the exact same perdicament right now. I'm laughing at myself because I have 9 configured & saved iMacs in my cart at Apple.com (Education Store, of course)

My problem is that my MacBook Pro 17" 4GB with 200 GB Hard Drive is out of space & I just got married 2 months ago & am in a brand new apartment. This gorgeous apartment needs a desktop to go with it, hence the iMac. I really wanted a Mac Pro with a 30" screen, but can't spend over $5K now.

My other problem is the configuration; the iMac is configured at $2,500 WITH the student discount already. 4GB Ram, 1 TB storage (I need it) + AppleCare (maybe I should buy that later on, any advantage to buying it now?).

I know we're mid-cycle; but should I wait until Christmas? I can't see myself lasting past November or so, especially since I'm a software engineer who does a lot of side projects at home & needs a desktop already.

Please make me feel better about my purchase or yell at me not to.

I plan to buy it at 2:05 AM EST on 9/24/2008 (in exactly 1 hour from now) allowing replies.

I say wait until the 2009 model comes out... Then realize that you could get something better if you just wait another year until the 2010 model comes out... Then realize that you could wait just another more year until the 2011 model comes out... Then...

It is just a computer, buy it...

;)

Well?

I bought it :)

The most embarrassing part is that I actually paid $90 more for the 2GB to 4GB RAM upgrade vs. buying on Crucial.

I had to because the last time I bought 3rd party RAM, a simple static shock to a chip inadvertently crippled my wife's laptop.

She kept chewing my ear off then & was chewing last night telling me to buy RAM upgrade direct from Apple.

You can't win some of those arguments; sometimes it pays to give in :-)

Oh yes it does!

Like that one fat comedian says, "You can either be right, or you can be happy..."

There are rumors imacs will get refreshed by end of 2008. Due to apples commitment to environmental issues. Possibly new LED screens and logic board with out BFR's whatever the are.

So might worth listening out for any more apple events.

I bought it :D

That's sad because they were just refreshed recently.

It's even sadder because they'll be quad core in 4-5 months for the 2009 refresh. :(

They won't have Quad-core processors. Don't forget, the iMacs still use laptop parts, and a Core 2 Quad isn't a standard in a laptop yet...
