Heh, well, I eventually managed to do it :) It thinks that my CPU is 3Ghz, but it's actually 2.2Ghz...

The Problem I Encountered:

When trying to tell VMWare to use the CD/DVD-Rom drive as an ISO file, it failed with an error about being unable to load /sbin/launchd err80 or something. This is becuase VMWare can't emulate hfs+ filsesystems or something (myzar knows more about it).

Solution:

Download Daemon Tools, mount the ISO with it, and then select the Virtual Drive that Daemon Tools created as the DVD Drive.

Anyway, just thought I'd let people know about that, becuase it was driving me up the wall today.

I hope everyone else has as much success and ease as I did. Any questions, just ask... :D

EDIT:

Find the guide on post #19 ;)

Congrats ;)

So it is also possible to install the prepatched version vmware to native. Thats good to know. I just did it once with the non-patched 10.4.4.

Yup :) Easy as a breeze... Even a noob could do it! :((seriously...)

The only weird thing is that it thinks my CPU is running at 3Ghz!!

Hmm, I'm trying to do the same thing for hours now.

I'm able to boot into the installer in VMwarebut it doesnt seem to recognize my Hdd. I use an external Hdd and tried both firewire and USB2.0. the Hdd is formatted as id=af on the first partition and NTFS on the second. I hoped that making the first partition id=af, would make the OSX disk utility recognize my Hdd, but no luck.

I have also tried ssigning either the whole Hdd or the id=af partition as Hdd in VMware. Still no luck.

What am I doing wrong?

Have you got a USB Device in the configuration for the Virtual PC?

Yes, I have USB - controller present

After doing more research, I think the problem is that It shows up as a SCSI drive, when OSX doesnt support SCSI drives.. Now I wonder if all external drives are SCSI?

Or is there another solution to it?

It needs to have an IDE Controller (I think, not totally sure. Don't really know what exactly SCSI is...).

Have you tried formatting the partition as hfs+ ? Maybe then it might reognise it... (You can format it in hfs+ by downloading the Darin Open Source CD)

Good luck - Don't give up!

Repair Disk Permissions on the volume using Disk Utility. That *should* solve the mounting issues.

For sound, try this: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Audio

For graphics, try this: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...&hl=ATi+Drivers

Nice to know it went well for you! :(

can you tell me plesa how to instal mac from VMWARE to native.

thank you for help

What exactly are you stuck at? Have youi downloaded VMWare Workstation 5.5? I could make a howto install from VMWare to native, step-by-step if you really need to (although there is already probably one in the Genius Bar)...

thank yoy for you quik answer.

yes i allready instaled VMWARE workstation and i instaled mac osx86 10.4.5 but in virtual ,I need to know if i can instaled to native partition because i tried to boot from the dvd but i get this messege

SAM Multimedia : Read or Write failed, ASC = 0x08, ASCQ = 0x03

disque1s2 : I/0 error,

Bus error

I hope that you can help me.

and if you make a howto install from VMWare to native, step-by-step i will be so happy because iam tierd because iam trying to instal it (native)from 1 week but nothing work

Right, I'll make one tomorrow, it's a bit too late now...

s this with a nForce 4 chipset? If so, how did you it to read your hard disk and get the onboard ethernet and audio to work?

My motherboard (in my sig) is an nForce4 Ultra. For ethernet, I use the 3Com905C-TX, and audio, I can use my on-board sound if I follow the audio thing in the Wiki. But right now, I use this external sound thing made by M-Audio. They have driver for it for OS X and everything, it's fully supported and detected. It's called "M-Audio Fast Track USB".

Well done mate !

I've also got Mac OS X (10.4.4) installed native through VMware a few days ago.

- Boots real fast ! (~15s)

- Sound is working great since first boot

- Managed to get working a PCI network card (RLT819 chipset) 'cause Built-in chipsets (Nvidia and Marvell Yukon) aren't supported.

-> Everything runs smoothly, internet works great etc...

BUT, I have one questions : How did you manage to get your resolution as high as 1280x1024 ?

My 6600GT (VESA 3.0) was set to 1024x768 and I can't get higher (even by editing the com.apple.boot.plist).

I understand that nvidia cards aren't supported with QE & CI yet, but I'm reading everywhere that resolutions higher than 1024x768 can be set.

By the way, OSX tells me than no kext is loader for the gfx card, and I noticed on boot (-v) that three kext fail to load (link/load error)... these are geforce.kext and two other nvidia/geforce kexts...

Is that a problem, or should they load alright ?

Thanks.

Hey Jackyyy. Good to hear it's working for you! :)

I didn't do anything to get my resolution higher, I just put it in at the Darwin Bootloader Prompt, and it worked.

I doubt this affects it, but have you tried putting

platform=X86PC

at the darwin boot prompt? Follwed by the resolution you want. That's what I did. I then eventually went on to editing the com.Apple.boot.plist file. I don't think it'll work, but it's worth a try!

Ok, here's the quick HowTo I said I was going to make... When I find the time, I will put it in the proper section, with a much more detailed guide, with pics, etc...

So, for now:

VMWare to Native Guide:

==========================================

Things you will need:

  • Windows (XP)
  • A Working 10.4.X bootable DVD Install Disc
  • VMWare Workstation (version 5.5 is the latest)
  • Daemon Tools (or another virtual drive making software)

==========================================

Step 1

Load up VMWare Workstation. Create a new Virtual Machine:

File => New => Virtual Machine.

Options you must select:

Custom | New - Workstation 5 | Other - Other | Virtual Machine Name (Optional) / Location (Optional) | Memory - 256MB or above is preferable | Do not use a network connection | SCSI - Buslogic | Use a Physical Disk | Select appropriate Device, Usage - Optional (for me it wasn't. I had to install OS X onto a full HDD, not a partitioned one... Not sure why...). | Disk file (Optional).

Step 2

Mount the 10.4.4/5 Bootable ISO DVD on a virtual drive. Don't tell the CD-ROM Drive to use an ISO file, select a drive made by Daemon Tools, (or Alcohol 120%, etc...) with the ISO mounted on that.

Step 3

Start the Virtual Machine. I cannot think of ANY reason why it would not start. When loading, press the ESC button to select to boot off the CD-Rom drive. Hopefully you should see the Darwin Bootloader. Then, you should be on your way to a clean install. Any problems, enter "-v" at the Darwin Bootloader prompt, and put the error here...

Good luck!

Thanks SABR! I followed your instructions and got it to install and boot in VMware on a 40gb partition, but when I try to boot it natively using Acronis OS Selector (Dual boot with XP), it gives me a "HFS+ Partition error" and wont boot. Is that the same error you got and the reason why you couldn't use a partition?

I also tried booting and installing from a DVD, but Disc Utility doesn't see either of my hard drives, just the DVD. Any ideas? Thanks!

Dell Optiplex GX260

P4 2.8ghz

1gb RAM

ATI 9600 128mb

Can you just install it like a regular OS disk, or do you have to use VMware to have OS X natively? VMware doesn't like my computer.

Yeah, you can boot the DVD at startup... However, for many people, the DVD wasn't detected, or it just wouldn't work (hardware compatability issues, etc...). So, in VMWare, it's like using another computer witht he same HDD

Hmmm, it could well be. Did you install it into the 1st partition or 2nd? If you can't get it to work, I recommened trying on a full HDD with no partitions... :censored2:

Now im getting an error when i try to format my partition in Disc utility that it "Can't write partition map" before I install. I was trying to put it on the second partition. I'm gonna try clearing off my other HD and trying that. I didn't want to do that because I don't want to use the whole 160gb drive just for this experiment, but its worth a try to see if it will work. :D

Now I *think* that is the problem. I'm pretty sure you have to install it onto the 1st partition, although I'm not exactly sure...

I think you'll be impressed at how it runs when you get it working :)

It boots up in about 10 - 15 seconds for me... It's amazing. :D

It works! Now I just have to figure out how to get a resolution higher than 1024x768 (ATI Radeon 9600), I'd like to get the wireless going, but I don't have much confidence in that (microsoft usb wireless adaptor), and I have to figure out why its not dual booting anymore. It boots straight to osx now. Reaaally fast though. It puts my G4 mac mini to shame in that regard so far.
