SSE2 - 10.5.2 successful update w/ kernel and graphics fix

Hey everyone- first of all thanks to the whole community for being here and being so helpful! I have successfully updated (system specs below) from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 complete with the new Universal 9.2 kernel courtesy of netkas.org.

1. Ran Kalyway Combo updater

2. Rebooted and ran Graphics fix from software update

3. Installed the new Universal Speedstep Kernel from netkas' site (not the Kalyway kernel updater)

4. Updated system.kext to version 9.2 - this fixed the 'hang on boot' 3-4 minute wait

I wanted people to know that this is possible on an older system, even running SSE2 only. No kernel panics, and smooth performance throughout. The only issues still remaining are that iCal still crashes immediately- I fixed this by checking 'Open w/ Rosetta' under Get Info. Slow launching, but I can sync my Google Calendar now!

Had Tiger installed since 2/07 as my main machine, and updated to Leopard when iAtkos v1.1r2 came out. Everything works pretty much out of the box- just had to select the right options installing iAtkos. Search my posts if you're interested in getting your Dell 4600 running well, and fully updated.

:D Thank you Insanelymac community, Uphuck team, OSx86 community, netkas, and all of the testers putting in hours reinstalling :)

EDIT: This method does work, and Leopard runs ok. However I switched back to Tiger for stability issues with many programs crashing.

Which system.kext did you use? From the Kalyway combo updater? I've been getting slow boots. I've tried a variety of things like updating to netkas kernel...

Thanks!

I've given this info to a few people by IM, but here's what I did. This guide assumes that you already have updated to 10.5.2 using the Kalyway Combo Updater:

1. I downloaded the free app TinkerTool and made it so I could see hidden files in the Finder (easier for Terminal un-savvy). I dragged (copied) the kernel to my desktop, and renamed it mach_kernel_91. Then I physically erased the old mach_kernel from the root of my Leopard hard drive. (no published methods do this, but it worked for me)

2. Then, I downloaded the kernel and unzipped it to my desktop and renamed it mach_kernel.

3. Using Finder (GUI) I dropped the new mach_kernel into the root directory (/) of the OSx86 installation.

4. Open terminal and type these commands to set the permissions correctly on the new kernel:

cd /

sudo chown -R root:wheel mach_kernel ; sudo chmod -R 755 mach_kernel

5. Repaired permissions and rebooted.

6. Replaced the system.kext with the new 9.2 version in Kalyway Combo updater backup kext folder using kexthelper

7. Repair permissions again, and reboot - shouldn't have any lag, and you should have the new kernel in System Profiler under Software.

Let me know how it goes! This should permanently fix the Graphics lag at boot time!!

i followed along the same procedure but didn't get the same results. It still hangs. When you downloaded the netkas kernel it was the first of the downloads in the IRC channel; was that the 9.2 universal?

Secondly, did you installed the System.kext from the kaylway combo backup folder correct?

If anyone has any 10.5.2 updates successfully with SSE2 machines please post up your procedure and results. Thanks for sharing your experience, tony. For the most part it is stable, not as much as 10.5.1 was for me, but it's working. Just wish that darn boot up would be faster without the black screen hang.

Sorry to those who had issues with this method- I added a step to the commands- you must type

cd /

to get to the root so that you can properly set permissions on the new kernel. The established method of replacing the kernel is this:

http://forum.osxx86.info/showthread.php?t=628

Lastly, I would love to help anyone with any specific problems, but I can't guarantee unless you have my exact system specs that this will work for you. I've heard about (very few) people still having the graphics hang after applying the 10.5.2 update. You may have to replace more of your kexts from the Kalyway Combo Update backup extensions folder to make the boot lag go away.

:P ALWAYS BACK UP! :P

Thanks for the help you are giving. I do appreciate it. My system specs should read below now. I'm tinkering with various kexts now. My process:

Kalyway 10.5.1 Fresh install

Kalyway 10.5.2 Combo updater

Replaced with netkas 9.2 universal speed step kernel

Replaced System.kext with Kalyway Combo one

Replaced AppleSMBios.kext with netkas

Following kexts have been bad for my install:

AppleACPIPlatform.kext

I will test more for us poor {censored} centrino sse2 children

Thanks a lot tonymacx86!!!

Though my hacintosh is SSE3 (but not Core Duo) , procedure is the same (as kernel is universal)...

Dont know however what to do with additional kext's like AppleSMBios.kext or AppleACPIPlatform.kext...

Shall I update them from netkas or so? What in fact do they do to my sys?

Thanks again...

My hackosx:

Intel Celeron D 2,5GHz (SSE3)

512MB RAM

GeForce FX5500 250MB

kalyway 10.5.1 installation...

I have a SSE2 CPU (P5VD2-MX with PentiumD 805). I followed the instructions, then downloaded Netkas Speedstep 9.20 Kernel, replaced the original one with this one (+ repaired permissions both with CHMOD as with Disk Utility) and then just installed System.kext with Kext Helper. That's all I did and it works.

I am a noob to this whole process. I think i got it though.

I backed up my mach_kernel and system.kext

Now i should run kalyway's updater?

Then after that replace the kernel with the Netkas Speedstep 9.2 kernel (renamed to mach_kernel) then replace the system.kext with the one found in kalyway's updater, right? I assume it would be the system kext kalyway put in the "10.5.2_Backup_orig & kernel_kext folder".

Am i allowed to ask where you get the Netkas Speedstep 9.2 kernel? I asked my friends down at the bay, but they dont have it.

Thanks!

Below is a package with the 9.2.0 universal kernel and the stock 10.5.2 system kext. That should fix the slow bootup after updating to 10.5.2 using kalyaway's 10.5.2 combo update. It keeps a backup of your current kernel and system.kext in case it fails. It's been tested to work with the kalyway release and brazilmac install--10.5 to 10.5.2 and 10.5.1 to 10.5.2. It says noEFI but should work for EFI install's too.

1. I downloaded the free app TinkerTool and made it so I could see hidden files in the Finder...

If you are already using the terminal why do you even need TinkerTool.

To install mach kernel:

1) open terminal

2) type > sudo rm /mach_kernel (this delete the original kernel, alternative you can use mv command to back it up)

3) type > sudo cp /LOCATION_OF_NEW_KERNEL /mach_kernel

4) you can either use the chown and chmod or use disk utility to repair permissions.

Jason48, I haven't tested this on the iAtkos release, so I can't tell you for sure. You always try it. The installer package backs up your current kernel and renames it to mach_kernel.1050 and the system.kext to system.kext.1050. if you encounter problems after the installation, you can boot on the dvd installer and delete mach_kernel then rename mach_kernel.1050 to mach_kernel. Repeat the same process for system.kext.

Let me know if it works or not.

ok I tried to update the mach_kernel when I reboot.I put the Mach_kernel in my root and tried to update and it is giving me errors on not finding directory.

Any ideas

Ex: cp _R /mach_toh /mach_kernel after this it says no such directory.

Thks
