i dont think it would logically be possible, since the other os uses a touch interface, not the clickwheel, that and the hardware requirements are probably higher than the classic ipod could handle?
and if you mean ipod classic on ipod touch, thatd make your stuff not work, unless you wrote a ton of drivers..... im pritty sure its not possible.
idk though, those are just guesses.

I was wondering the same, there are chances that the hardware is identical or almost.
With some luck, it may be compatible. However, even in the best scenario, I guess it has some kind of checks to prevent this.

The ifixit site doesn't seem to distinguish the iPod 5 and 5.5 whereas they should, so we don't know where the 5th gen logic board photo comes from

well, i see now, i saw it with all the components inside, but the connectors are the same, just not the chips, i wonder if the ipod classic has a wifi chip in it for song sharing?, i think instead the ipod touch/ipod classic should use bluetooth, so then you can share song with phones like to moto razr and slvr

I don't know if I'd want the new OS on my iPod. I have no problem with the one on it right now.

I would probably say no. Apple want you to buy a new iPod, not keep your old one

Since there's obviously people wanting it, here's a link to the iPod Classic firmware:
It doesn't download for me in Safari, but curl -O works. But don't expect to be able to get this working on older machines - from what I can guess, this is an embedded version of OS X (as there are no portalplayer strings in the firmware and it's 90mb). Rename the .ipsw file to .zip and unzip it.
