Apple Legal May Be Collecting Evidence

I just recieved a PM requesting that certain "patch" files be sent to an email address.

Given the timing of this and the fact that there is no explicit reason to believe that I would be in possession of any such "patches", I find this PM to be extremely suspect.

Furthermore, as this site is under US jurisdiction, I believe that the only reason why it remains online may be that Apple is using it to collect evidence for legal cases they are actively preparing.

I strongly advise that everyone here heighten precautions and specifically avoid sharing any potentially incriminating information until Apple's legal plan has been fully revealed.

A few moments ago I also received this PM:

"hi

i m trying to install osx86 but i need the files ditto.tgz and coregraphics.tgz please send them te me my mail is .............@gmail.com

thanks"

Since I don't have those files I couldn't be helpful.

But I was so naive. I didn't thought of Apple trying to get any evidence.

Thanks for the alert.

But it's so silly to feel this mistrust. I love Macs! With my words I've sold several Macs. I'm at my personal office and I'm surrouded by 10 ( yes, ten ) Macs.

BTW, have you seen other sites closed?

This is exactly the same message I received, so it appears that my suspicion is now being confirmed.

I got the same PM not to long ago.. Considering I can't actually run it (machines below specs), It must be a random PM going around. It could be an idiot, or could be a trap, who knows?

Would they actually target end users? That seems a little silly, and would give them a bad PR rap. I mean, if you got sued by apple, would you buy an apple product? would anyone in your family?

This seems like such a boost for them, Sure, theres a negative, it is piracy, but there are so many advantages for them. It's not real stable so people can't use it as a main OS, it doesn't run much, and the public domain are litterally doing all their testing for them.

Plus, because of the leak, god, look at how many applications (freeware and shareware) will be ready to go at launch of the OS? Sure, I bet microsoft already started porting Office and such, but for most computer users, the freeware, opensource, and shareware is what we all use.

I'm wondering. What if people running the beta went and bought a copy of the newest OSX? Technically in the licence agreement it doesnt say what you can run it on.. So you would own a licence from Apple.. Hmmm technicalities..

Either way, I hope it doesn't get ugly, if they ever just released it for white box PC's, you bet I'd go and buy it. I'd rather do that then have to have 2 machines, just because I like both Windows and OSX.

I have a lot of respect for Apple, I really hope they handle this in a non-Microsoft way, but they may be panicing.. Who knows..

What's funny, look at the community it's forming in itself, I think anyone running it, if they wernt so afraid of getting sued, would help Apple, report back to them, whats working, send them their patches, updates, and fixes....

Ah well, no one ever listens to us users, they assume and make judgements instead of maybe reading these boards.

You've stolen my words. I agree 100% with you.

Just a correction: Apple's EULA says that you can only run Mac OS X on Apple's approved hardware.

Genesi also manufactures G4 motherboards called Pagasos, in which you can run MorphOS, Linux, OpenSolaris...and Mac OS X, but not legally.

Yes....this is certainly a serious situation, and we should all be on the lookout for any more suspicious activity. Bofors: Could you perhaps forward that PM to me? And anyone else receiving a similar such PM should contact either myself, or one of the other Mods/Admins. Remeber though, that this site does not support illegal activity involving the developers kit. This site is simply for discussing and learning. We give you the tools, it's up to you to decide what to do with them...illegally or not.

As Simon's "OS X for Intel" forum was pulled do to excessive bandwith not Apple Legal, I guess that I may have been premature in blowing the whistle.

However, I remain convinced that Apple Legal in preparing to take serious action against this site and would like to encourage everyone to plan accordingly.

Another one sniffing around maybe, they'd posted once asking for a download location, I replied to the effect of the obvious place and later took the reply down, they now PM'd and asked for a direct FTP.... very fishy IMO. Probably looking for someone to sue via a nice wide open file server on a nice wide open IP address...

I got a PM from shadowro. Haven't replied yet. It goes like this:

where to download MacOSx x86 ?

thanks.

He has no posts so far.

Do you honestly think for a split second the technical investigations division of Apple’s legal department would be stupid enough to send you a privet message from a new account with no postings? You all better be rethinking how you are going to get yourselves out of this line of fire when the bomb drops. Apple's TID has been on this site from day one and not everyone on here is smart enough to keep their mouth shut.

Hmmm... Personally I am an Apple user, and only an Apple user (I do use windows for testing)... the x86/intel news really got me excited, and the news that people are successfully already using it on x86 is even better... I really wish Apple's legal dept would calm down. For being such a people friendly company, they are always jumping on one site or another site for some tiny little thing (this isn't tiny, but some other stuff has been). The music industry screwed up when they didn't embrace the masses and started suing, now they are having a hard time getting back up from sluggish sales, and thanks to Apple and iTunes a happy medium was found, but only after 5 years or so of threats and blaming, etc. If Apple would embrace this as an opportunity like others have already said, letting normal users download the limited beta for testing and developing, then by the time the official OSx86 is released (around the same time as Windows Vista aka Windows XP special edition) then apple would be able to release it to the public with enough extras and third party hardware/software to make a lot more people go ahead and shell out $130 for their OS rather than $300 for vista pro for their normal PCs... They have got to realize that this thing leaking is huge (and free) advertising for them. I would still buy an Apple machine for work, but if I could install the OS on my wife's existing hardware for less than windows, hell yeah I would buy it. And so would all of my family and friends that love my powerbook but can't see paying for the higher priced hardware. Not only that but gaming might actually get big once they switch to x86 and then people wouldn't even have a reason to buy windows.... come on Apple, let this thing slide and you will reap the rewards...

now to those that have gotten it running and are experienced with real Apple G4/G5 hardware, how does the speed compare as far as running, boot time, time to load apps, etc?
