I am going to buy a new computer moniter in a few months time, and I am wondering what to go for.

I'm either going to get a 19" or a 19" widescreen. That means either a 1280x1024 screen or a 1440x900 screen. The 19" has more pixels, but would I benefit more from widescreen?

What are your thoughts?

With a wide screen you can get 2 A4 size pages side by side to do layout. Most games have widescreen options nowadays; it gives you a bit of an advantage in first person shooters as you get a wider field of vision so your situational awareness is better. If you watch movies you don't have half your screen wasted by letter boxing. IMHO, once you go widescreen you will never want to use a 4:3 ever again.

Well, I got the tape measure out today and had a look at things.

I've got quite a small desk, and it seems it won't be able to comfortably fit a widescreen moniter alongside my laptop moniter.

As much as I would like a widescreen, looks like at 4:3 will have to do.

even if you dont have enough room...id go for the widescreen, after using a 19" wide monitor for a while i now feel that 4:3 monitors are simply ugly...i dont dig the "square-ness". but i geuss its all preference.

although widescreens fee more spacey just because of the extra width, it allows you to spread things out a bit more.

Paranoid Marvin

I see from your sig that you use Linux.

I bought a SyncMaster 205BW a couple of months ago, and it has been yet another piece of problematic hardware ever since.

It is possible however that the reason is my ATI X1600XT.

I haven't had NVIDIA cards for about one year now, but I can remember that the NVIDIA drivers had a fantastic control center.

So that is what I'd try to find out if I were you, unless Linux doen't really matter a lot to you.

It's interesting you said that - I hooked it up to a LCD monitor the other day, and i couldn't for the life of me make it work.

I'll always have a CRT to sort things out though.

I have to agree, though, the Nvidia controls are much better

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough.

A SyncMaster 205BW is a widescreen monitor. What I mean is that I have found it really difficult to get the right resolution for it.

Otherwise I haven't had problems with LCD monitors in general. And again, my problems might be due to my ATI card.

I have been all widescreen since 2001.

I do a lot of writing, and being able to have 2 pages sitting side by side in Word really sold me on it.

Widescreen has many of the benefits of a dual-head display in a slightly less daunting and in my case, more portable form factor.

Sure, when it comes to work, I still do the dual screen setups just because I need the space to write my code and see how it runs and what it looks like at the same time.

With a widescreen, it just "feels" like you are getting more. Whether it is true or not is really up to you.
