Paranoid Marvin
I am going to buy a new computer moniter in a few months time, and I am wondering what to go for. I'm either going to get a 19" or a 19" widescreen. That means either a 1280x1024 screen or a 1440x900 screen. The 19" has more pixels, but would I benefit more from widescreen? What are your thoughts?
Perry44
Widescreen, especially if you would benefit more from it. Widescreen always seems to please guests more than standard screens. So, in my opinion, widescreen would be best.
glassJAw
Widescreen. I recommend the Hanns Product line from Newegg.com. I bought a 19 inch from them and its awesome.
U.C.
Widescreen is just hype. You get more usable display area with standard. Plus games seem to prefer 4:3.
Paranoid Marvin
I'm not really a gamer... I suppose, all I want is as much real estate as possible. The 4:3 has more pixels, but would a widescreen just seem bigger because of the aspect?
fOZf8
I'd stick to 4:3 at 19"...it's really just preference, but after using a 19" 4:3 LCD for the last year, I find I need at least a 1024+ vertical res on a widescreen in order to not feel claustrophobic. non sequitur
It's all good, it's all personal preference. I dig my 1440*900, but i enjoy widescreen. its up to you.
Paranoid Marvin
I have spotted this very nice Dell monitor. It's got a 600:1 contrast ratio as well as DVI and VGA (something I really need). Four USB ports ought to come in handy as well. The price is top notch too. Anyone else got once of these?

Paranoid Marvin
i have the older 1703FP version of it How long have you had it. Any dead pixels or blotches? I guess from the smilie though that you have had no problems. Well, it's my birthday soon, so I think I will splash out then
consolation
With a wide screen you can get 2 A4 size pages side by side to do layout. Most games have widescreen options nowadays; it gives you a bit of an advantage in first person shooters as you get a wider field of vision so your situational awareness is better. If you watch movies you don't have half your screen wasted by letter boxing. IMHO, once you go widescreen you will never want to use a 4:3 ever again. Paranoid Marvin
Well, I got the tape measure out today and had a look at things. I've got quite a small desk, and it seems it won't be able to comfortably fit a widescreen moniter alongside my laptop moniter. As much as I would like a widescreen, looks like at 4:3 will have to do.
Gcrumpets
even if you dont have enough room...id go for the widescreen, after using a 19" wide monitor for a while i now feel that 4:3 monitors are simply ugly...i dont dig the "square-ness". but i geuss its all preference. although widescreens fee more spacey just because of the extra width, it allows you to spread things out a bit more. Soündless
i didnt care for a while, but once i got a widescreen, i couldnt go back. they look better
INFNITE
plus, widescreens work better w/ movies. widescreens are also better for multitasking (although 1440 x 900 is a bit small for that). there's a reason why HD is widescreen...simply looks better. Alessandro17
Paranoid Marvin I see from your sig that you use Linux. I bought a SyncMaster 205BW a couple of months ago, and it has been yet another piece of problematic hardware ever since. It is possible however that the reason is my ATI X1600XT. I haven't had NVIDIA cards for about one year now, but I can remember that the NVIDIA drivers had a fantastic control center. So that is what I'd try to find out if I were you, unless Linux doen't really matter a lot to you.

It's interesting you said that - I hooked it up to a LCD monitor the other day, and i couldn't for the life of me make it work. I'll always have a CRT to sort things out though. I have to agree, though, the Nvidia controls are much better

What I mean is that I have found it really difficult to get the right resolution for it. Otherwise I haven't had problems with LCD monitors in general. And again, my problems might be due to my ATI card.
Adrian Fogge
I have been all widescreen since 2001. I do a lot of writing, and being able to have 2 pages sitting side by side in Word really sold me on it. Widescreen has many of the benefits of a dual-head display in a slightly less daunting and in my case, more portable form factor. Sure, when it comes to work, I still do the dual screen setups just because I need the space to write my code and see how it runs and what it looks like at the same time. With a widescreen, it just "feels" like you are getting more. Whether it is true or not is really up to you.
