Greetings InsanelyMac Community,

I'm very interested in creating a Hackintosh out of my new computer, mainly for production purposes and because the MacOS platform is the middle ground between Linux (which I'm very familiar with) and Windows (which I'm not very fond of). I have purchased a Lion USB Key from Apple and have tried a few install methods I've found on these forums and Tonymacx86 though nothing has really worked. I haven't beenable to even load into the install program for Lion, so I'm not really sure what the best method of getting Lion and ultimately Mountain Lion are for my system.

System Specs

Biostar TPower X79 Motherboard

Intel Core i7 3820 Sandy-Bridge CPU

SanDisk Extreme 120 GB SSD

WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD

G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 16GB 2133MHz RAM

EVGA GeForce 670 GTX GPU

I don't even know if its possible, but any help or guides would be fantastic. I don't know much about DSDT editing and specific hardware kexts, but thank you in advanced for your help!

the lion instal usb will not work for a number of reasons, most obvious being your not using a mac. also for your cpu, only the new Mountain Lion kernel or the lion kernel from the 2012 MacbookPro update, so the version of Lion on the usb key won't work even if you applied all the necessary hack mods to it.

Nice machine BTW

Thank you for the reply! So does that mean I need purchase a Mountain Lion USB Key? Once I have that will a usual guide work?

Once you have Mountain Lion and a USB, yes. I don't think it's available preinstalled on a USB key yet since it came out today, and you'll pretty much be erasing it from the USB key and restoring it back on again with any guide, so not much reason to pay the price difference for the USB key vs retail download. If you don't have access to another Mac to log into the app store, so long as you purchase Mountain Lion, be it before or after having installed it, you've met my moral obligations.

I have no intention of pirating a copy of Mac, I am hoping to do development on the OS and pirating isn't something I support if thats what you're implying. But I do have a VM with Lion on it right now that will allow me to download Mountain Lion. What should I follow to get Mountain Lion installed on my system once the app is downloaded?

I wasn't implying that at all, since you purchased the Lion USB that is obvious, at the same time I'm not going to tell you to go download it from another illegitimate source, as long as you can get a copy, that's what mattered. If you have a hard drive to install onto that can be formatted as GUID/GPT then once you have ML from your VM you can do the following, I wrote this for ML DP4 upgrades where the person would already have many of the bits and pieces(like a patched DSDT and pre configured org.chameleon.boot.plist) on their prior install, so tried to make a few changes for your scenario, but may have missed some things, and some trial and error may be needed on the boot options, but hopefully will be enough to get running, then can work on getting the various parts working properly Any apps I mention are available here in the new hadrware releases and downloads section. If any issues come up along the way, they would be best answered by somebody who has a socket 2011 and a GTX 670, so unless you want to give me one......here you go:

first, make empty partition available for installing onto on guid only drive, hfs+ formatted. RT click install ML app, mount InstallESD.dmg, navigate to basesystem.dmg and mount it. restore basesystem.dmg from ML install app(to usb or another small partition) via diskutility. Eject basesystem.dmg so u dont get it mixed up with new restored one as it will have same name. Fire up ye mighty terminal and go to bash shell with:sudo -s

then copy packages folder from installESD.dmg to System/Installation/ on your newly restored usb like this:cp -R (drag packages folder here) (drag installation folder from usb here)

give it a few minutes to finish

then do the same copy technique, but this time for mach_kernel from InstallESD.dmg to / of new usb:cp -R (drag mach kernel here) (drag entire usb installer volume here)

and done with terminal-yay

download Chameleon from here: Enoch-rev.2035.pkg.zip , run the installer and choose your USB as the destination

create /Extra folder on usb if one was not already created by the Chameleon installer and download Chameleon Wizard, use it to generate a valid smbios and configure a org.chameleon.boot.plist that will both go in the Extra folder, for the options choose npci=0x2000, mach_kernel and GraphicsEnabler to start with, again may need to play with this part a bit to get right config. Choose the smbios that best matches your hardware as possible.

use kext wizard to install fakesmc and nullcpupowermanagement to s/l/e on your usb drive, then use kext wiz repair permissions

reboot and chose the USB drive in bios. At the chameleon prompt, choose to boot to your new installer (OSX Base system) and use boot flags -x -f -v

install ML and reboot back to your old VM. From there use kext wiz again to install fakesmc and NullCpuPowermanagement.kextto your new ML and copy /Extra folder from installer to your completed installation. Once you have a patched DSDT file, NullCpuPowermanagement.kext can be removed

reboot, and this time from chameleon prompt choose new OSX ML. Should always use -v to boot until your install is rock solid. Install chameleon to your internal HD

Why not? I've never ran OSX in a VM only everything else in VM from OSX, so pardon any ignorance on the subject, but if you installed OSX to a separate partition, could you not then boot back into windows or Linux and access it's files using your previous VMware set up? Maybe need additional hfs drivers or something and/or file permission issue since sharing not enabled. Best way by far if you can manage is to connect your drive to a real mac that supports ML and install OSX to your drive that way, then install all the hack parts you'll need and plug it back into your hackintosh. But as a first time build while still learning how to do it, you couldn't have picked a trickier setup to do at this point in time.

Well thank you very much for your help! I'll try these steps over the weekend and if I have any questions I'll try to look into it more before taking up more of your time. Its very much appreciated and hopefully I can get all this working. Thanks again!

Alrighty thought I would post an update here! I've managed to get 1.8.0 Mountain Lion flawlessly installed on my hardware, just following the setups in this guide. My only issue now is my CPU doesn't seem to want to function well. I can only boot with -v otherwise it locks up at the apple logo screen, and when I do get in then its extremely slow and choppy unless I also boot with cpus=1. I would like my CPU to function like normal, and really thats the only issue I have. Everything else works and performs flawlessly! Thanks so much for the guide, and any assistance in getting the CPU working better would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

you have to use the VoodooTSCSync.kext and your Systems runs well with all core´s!

Is there a particular way I should install this kext? Do you recommend a certain place for me to get it from? Thanks!

Well I installed VoodooTSCSync.kext with Kext Beast and it worked flawlessly! I now load up without any tags and it's flawless 100%!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!! Thanks so much for the help everyone! I'll post some benchmarks and such in a bit.

Check out my blog:

http://rampagedev.wordpress.com

Here I fully support x79 motherboards and DSDT creation.

Well thanks! But, actually all of my stuff is working flawlessly. I have no issues, everything works including FaceTime and iCloud, not sure what else I really should test to make sure it all works haha. Sleeping and waking works as well, and the system boots insanely fast.

Edit: Also my 16GBs of RAM is running perfectly at 2133MHz.

I would like to see your unedited DSDT if I could. Please post it at your convenience.
