I Feel Dirty

I thought I wanted to run Windows on my Mac, but even if there were all the correct drivers, I still don't like it. I don't play games, so no biggie there. I really only have a few apps I need windows for. In the last year I've moved all of my software to OS X, and/or Open Source.

I guess what I really want is virtualization. I don't like rebooting to an OS that I don't like just to run an app. I think Windows should stay wher it belongs... "IN A WINDOW"

But maybe that's just me.

I agree - there is no need to use Windows. If you switch your apps to Mac you will find that your workflow is better and faster, and you'll feel good for not supporting M$.

The difference between the two OSs is huge - I can no longer work on Windows. I genuinely find that it slows me down - I worked out that I only get around 3/4 of my work done in a day when I use Windows compared to OS X, which is ridiculous is it not !?!?!

Anyone using OS X there should try Quicksilver (perhaps a precursor to the new Finder window system expected for Leopard10.5) It has sped my life up, let alone my workflow.

The virtualization device which you sought is called a KVM switch :D Seriously, with hardware prices being so cheap, why settle for one PC at a time. Run two, run three or four PCs and make them dual cores to boot! Waiting for dual core virtualization hardware may take a while, why wait? you can do the same thing with cheap PCs and a KVM switch.

As to editopen's comment:

I think there will always be applications and hardware that is not supported by any other OS than Windows. There is also no good reason to support $teve Job$ over M$ just on the basis of costs. They are both large corporations trying to make as much money off you as they can. If anything, I rather see my $ going to Gates than Jobs because of all the philantropy and positive changes that Gates is beginning to realize his wealth can bring.

I have mutiple PC's. Before dual booting I was/am using term service's for Windows, and Xnest for Suse. I want to just use one computer. Too much maint. for all of them. That's why I would rather be using virtualization.

Oh, and the KVM is a no go for my intel iMac. I have synergy to share my mouse and keyboard between my systems.

Synergy looks interesting, but I noticed it is still PPC binary and that it is only a KM solution without the video (eg, not KVM): http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...lease_id=379175

Here is a Windows wizard for Synergy: http://xhirl.donationcoders.com/main.php?page=synergywizard

However, some would prefer the simplicity and arguably stability of a KVM, when it is an option.

To those who feel dirty, why are you here at all?!

But seriously, in my case I think all the work being done here by the hacker GODS (including you, AirmanPika, all your posts are very helpful!) is fantastic because there are some apps I have to run which didn't have Mac equivalents in the mapping field, and now I can.

Being able to plug in a Keyspan USB serial adapter and use it in the software as if it was a real PC is huge for me. Virtual PC never really worked quite right, and wasn't even an option once the Intel Macs came along (and who knows how long Microsoft will take getting a UB version out).

Like everyone else here, I'm really hoping X1600 drivers are not far over the horizon, but even the progress so far has made my year!

To be honest in the end its all about preference. I prefer windows, others prefer OSX. They are OSs, they do the same damn thing when you peel away all the nonsense and arguments.

That's weird, Pika. You're my Internet Hero, but I hadn't thought it was a preference thing, because to me OSX seems so much more fluid and intuitively built, and the built-in mail, media management, calendaring, etc. stuff made me renounce my MCSE, hard-core WinGeek ways, and fall in love with a well-designed, cohesive OS.

Sure, they do the same thing, but for me OS X helps me do it faster, and enjoy it more.

Either way, I'm grateful to ya for your extensive skills, computer hacking skills, numchuck skills, bowhunting skills...

Quicksilver is such a catalyst in the speed with which you work your mac. Opening programs can take a hundred times less than using say 'Start' - 'Programs' on Windows, or finding the app in Finder on OSX. Great download, very worthwhile.

I guess I'm on the flipside of that but for my own personal reasons. I understand OSX well but I know windows better and can do things with it most people can't so for me I can get my work done faster and more efficiently. Its what you are most comfortable with IMO. Both OS' have their nuances and people choose whats best (some even feel Windows AND OSX are {censored} and that *nix is best. Thats their choice). I'm not saying that either is simply better than the other though because each one has its ups and downs. Its up to users to decide. At least now for the first time Apple users have a choice in the matter. Hopefully Apple will open up to the PC world with OSX or some future OS someday too

 Agree with all sentiments. I use XP at work being a professional Solutions Architect. Over the last years I have worked solely in M$ technologies.

Apple have a great OS there is no doubt, but Windows also has some great features and I am sick and tired of listening to people bleating on about how bad m$ are. I am sure Apple would be much the same if they were in the domination position that M$ are.

Lets get real all M$ or Apple care about is that we all cough up our money to buy their products. Apple create great products but is it my imagination or are they not going the way of the PC vendors. New product releases every other month. It's only recenlty they released the new G5 (which I bought by the way) 3 months later the new G5 was replaced with the yet newer iMac this time core duo. How many new IPODS have been released ?

Anyways stop bleating... (directed at me not you guys).

The open source (hacker or whatever the big guys want to call us) are working at beating them at their own game (legally of course) in trying to challenge their worlds by build collaboration and great software. What's the best internet browser ? (Firefox maybe ????).

So lets accept the following:

Any corporation (M$/Apple/IBM) will do whatever they can to get you to buy their product, they don't care about you it's about profitability. (If they did care about you then apple would have licensed a vendor to create a full BIOS implementation).

Everyone has different reasons for using an operating system and they are all valid.

M$ are not the enemy.

Life is about having fun, learning and doing the right thing.

Well anyway nuff said. Well done for getting to this point and looking forward to seeing the XOM code. I have already posted links to similar code and I am working myself on a full solution.

Regards all, oh yeah the video drivers will not be solved until the XOM hardcoding is replaced.
