Simon42
Asus has just started selling their newest CULV variation. It's a 13 incher with 1.3 GHz SU7300 and switchable GeForce G210m. Looks ideal at 3.7 lbs and 10 hours on battery. Amazon link My questions are: has anyone tested the G210m in OS X? I think they're just 40nm shrinks of earlier architectures and more or less date back to GeForce 8-9, so they could work with drivers already available. If not, they probably the new stage in MacBook GPU evolution (9400m=G110m=shrunk into G210m unless they skip it to G300 architecture that could be completely different). Also, has anyone tried variations of this particular laptop; it has been released in 14 and 15 inch formats before. Thanks for sharing any info you might have. It could be the perfect step-up from my current Asus MacBook Mini (1000HA). voxelized
I'm interested in this laptop too! I'm deciding between the UL30 + X200s + VAIO Z... yes there is a big price difference between the three but they are all in the same category. I don't think OSX works well on the VAIO and probably not at all on the X200s. I don't think OSX works well on the VAIO and probably not at all on the X200s. The Viao and the X200 are 1. way too expensive and 2. have a GM45 GPU that makes them non-working for OS X. I posted here to hear about this new blend of nVidia graphics and Hackintoshing possiblities. I've read reviews of the UL30's bigger siblings and they seem very good at gaming and show performance test numbers surprisingly close to those of a MacBook Pro. I can't believe no-one has picked one up already or looked at the possibility at least. nightalon
Please let us all know how this laptop treats you under Snow Leopard! It looks like it could be a beast, although I'm wondering whether the Nvidia GPU will be as easy to set up as the 9 series chips were. Also, please let me know whether there is an extra internal MiniPCI-E slot for a 3G modem! voxelized
EDIT #1: iATKOS v7 works with "-v cpus=1" since this laptop uses the GS45 chipset. I could not get iDeneb to boot up after the install. ACPI issues (oh so common 16384 blah blah message). EDIT #2: Since this laptop has "two" video cards and no way to switch using the BIOS.... getting the GT220M to work will be un-typical. The LCD display is connected to the X4500 graphics card by default. ----- Empire EFI w/ retail SL disc doesn't work (will try legacy EFI version later) iPC - nope iATKOS - nope iDeneb - yup! (installing now) I can imagine this laptop being a little finicky. I attempted to boot using a portable HD with a working iDeneb install (for another laptop) in safe mode and it halted. I definitely want SL in this laptop - but will try Leopard first. voxelized
These instructions work for Leopard: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t=#entry1336106 But again, networking + video not working. My feeble attempt at a custom EFI string failed. The System Profiler also tells me the main display is connected to the integrated graphics. I'm thinking of buying this laptop as well... but before a buy, I'd like to know if it would support OS x SL. What do you think the chances are of getting the graphic card / audio / networking to work? Also, it apparently has software over-clocking - "speed33" - can you emulate the over clocking in OS X? seahawkwest
Hello Voxalized. Great Work Sorry for my english. I'm from Spain. I have the Asus UL50Vg that I think it's very similar with: SU 7300 4 GB RAM Intel GMA 4500 (native graphic card) Geforce G210M (dedicated graphic card) Realtek ALC269 (audio) Atheros AR9285 (wifi) I have a question: You have the same audio card that me ?. Because the audio don't work's. Any solution it's important for me. For audio, i have tried these methods with no results http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/the_sound_tutorial http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/forum/t-101853...s-ugly-stop-gap http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;mode=threaded I can run iatkos v7 with cpus=1 and install it. No problem. (20 minutes) After the installation I have a kernel panic and shutdown the computer. Then, when i reset the computer i could run mac os 10.5.7 perfectly. Without audio, qe, wifi and 1024x768 of resolution. Keyboard and trackpad only runs with voodoo Ps/2 But don't works with voodoo ps/2 with trackpad. USB works perfectly Another question: when i play any mp3 though i can't listen anything i see that itunes plays mp3 very slow ..... Now i can't make any test because i made it last weekend and finally now i have a dualboot with windows 7 and linux but if you want i can format the system and reinstall iatkos v7 again with no problem and try any kests. nikhilrt, the overclocking button don't work for me. I Have not saw any change. Sorry Thank you in advance. I'm pretty pathetic when it comes to setting up audio kexts because somehow it's always worked for me on my previous installs (Gigabyte UD5 and a LG laptop). I'll have to check what the audio chip is, but I know the different UL models have different networking chips. Oh, I've migrated to Snow Leopard on all my machines. I believe the kernic panic in Leopard is requires busratio=20... something to do with more than 2GB of memory. SL is stable without any crazy settings. My keyboard + trackpad work under SL perfectly... just use these three kexts (keyboard + trackpad + voodooHDA). http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...75372&st=20 Again, SL is probably the easiest setup - 1. Clean install to HD 2. Add RC3/RC4 bootloader to HD 3. Add custom kext to /Extras folder (see above for list) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/200735-culv-light-laptop-with-nvidia-graphics-asus-ul30-vt/#findComment-1358870 Share on other sites

You recommend me to install snow leopard original instead of iatkos ? I can install snow leopard on my machine if for example I can get an original dvd of snow leopard and make a copy for me ? It's posible ? And I can add custom kext since Iatkos ? voxelized
@voxelized : Have you got the kexts you mentionned earlier in your post ? I don't know which one I could use for an SL installation Most of the kext I got were from the i7 Gigabyte UD5 install thread - as I own a working i7 Hackintosh also. The PS2 kexts (for trackpad + keyboard) are from the VoodooHDA/VoodooPS2 thread. Snow Leopard seems pretty easy to install without major mods. However, video is a major issue. I can always buy a USB WiFi stick or use tethered iPhone for internet (legal in Canada!) voxelized
Getting Snow Leopard on this laptop was easy... (see above or the UL30A thread). I have NO HOPE for the switchable graphics to be usable thus I gave up and stuck with Windows 7. Switchable graphics is non-trivial and requires custom drivers. In the future(6 months), I'll try to force the system to use the discrete graphics only. The default integrated graphics is rather slow.
