Suhail
Hello Everyone, I have been working on Linux for quite some time but have never made any of my installs look good because I mainly do Command Line and SSH stuff with LAMP installs. I mainly use Ubuntu Gutsy and have finally got a GUI Install fired up on my mainstream PC on a separate partition. So has anyone have any good GNOME eye candy which would make it look good? Anything from Icons to Themes to apps. Thanks in advance - Suhail Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/99246-customise-linux/ Share on other sites
Alessandro17
Hello Everyone, I have been working on Linux for quite some time but have never made any of my installs look good because I mainly do Command Line and SSH stuff with LAMP installs. Anything from Icons to Themes to apps. Thanks in advance - Suhail I am not an Ubuntu or Gnome expert, but Parsix looks very good by default. Also, being Parsix Debian based, you can easily install extra themes. As to icons, my understanding is that in Gnome they go together with themes. http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=04794 I was looking for snapshots, but I didn't find very much. These are from the previous release: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/...=Parsix%201.0r0 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/99246-customise-linux/#findComment-708613 Share on other sites
Suhail
I have personally tried Parsix and I also think it looks excellent but for now I am sticking with Ubuntu or Fedora because of the massive community Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/99246-customise-linux/#findComment-708675 Share on other sites
Alessandro17
I don't want to contradict you, but Parsix is nothing but a customized Debian, and the Debian community isn't certainly small Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/99246-customise-linux/#findComment-708829 Share on other sites
rob356
if you're on Gust Gibbon, you can give Compiz-Fusion a try. It's labled "Desktop Effects." See the ubuntu forums of you have issues, but if it is a clean install you should be fine. It gives you themes, fancy window effects, an awesome multi-desktop cube interface switcher, and more. I love it. with it running I only use 256mb of ram. It doesn't work with all graphics cards though, and it is still beta. Tim Smart
My current Ubuntu desktop is attached. Compiz Fusion Extras Manager is also essential for a good looking GUI Go any questions about what is what on my desktop, just ask. gazaha
Like the others said, try out Compiz Fusion for eye candy (get compizconfig-settings-manager for more fine-tuned effects, I think that's the package name, but I can't check now). If you want a good dock, try out Avant Window Navigator (AWN: https://launchpad.net/awn/). I think Tim is using it from the screenshot. Also, take a look at http://www.gnome-look.org for GNOME themes, icons, etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/99246-customise-linux/#findComment-717330 Share on other sites
snakeeyes
Here r my screenshots, if u like them then tell me I will give u some details about the theme: Like the others said, try out Compiz Fusion for eye candy (get compizconfig-settings-manager for more fine-tuned effects, I think that's the package name, but I can't check now).
