zonker
What type of DVD drive are you using? IDE or SATA? When I installed iATKOS, I had to connect BOTH an IDE DVD and IDE HD. I booted from the IDE DVD. I did not have to install to the IDE HD, I only had to have BOTH devices connected to get past the "still waiting for root device" message. I installed to SATA drives and then once done, shut down and removed the IDE devices. All is fine now running SATA only. You may need to connect BOTH an IDE DVD and HD to get past it. Eric Swenson
I'm having a similar problem. I have an ASUS M2A-VM MB, with the AMD 690G chipset. This includes the ATI SB600 southbridge. I have an IDE HD and an IDE DVD-ROM drive (no SATA devices installed). I'm trying to install Zephyroth' Leopard-10.5.2-AMD-EFI-Rev2 release and getting the "Still waiting for root device" problem. I've tried both HD=master/DVD-ROM=slave and vice versa. I have a Samsung SD-612 DVD-ROM. I have NOT updated the drivers on the install iso, and wonder whether I need to do so with updated SB600 drivers. Anyone have any suggestions? psychonautuk
Make sure your Hard disk is plugged into the master connection of the IDE drive ( last one) if you are not using SATA as I am not, disable it in the BIOS. In lamens terms its looking for a drive in the first available place, it cant find one
blankmac
I had this same problem. Putting both the DVD and the HD on the same IDE channel with the DVD set to master and the HD destination set to slave solved the problem. The installation was horribly slow, though -- took about 3hrs.
Jyrks
But i have DVD and HD both with SATA port (only) so is there any way to solve this problem...?

iSkylla
I wouldn't wait for the device, it's obviously a lazy device. Move on and be done with it.
Mr G
Ok, don't laugh. I had the dreaded "waiting for root device" problem yesterday. I tried *everything* I could think of. Then, I unplugged the PS/2 keyboard and plugged in a USB one. Bango! The DVD booted without any trouble. Why did I try that? Desperation? More likely it was all the beer I drank in despair... Now that I have successfully installed (Zephyroth), all I have to do is figure out how to boot into the OSX partition. Still working on that one... All4Shiva
I am having a similar issue and so I am posting to this thread. I am using an Apple g3 ibook and was planning on switching my desktop to osx86. ECS PM800-m2 Via VT8237 and PM800 2.4 Northwood Celeron SSE2 only (if this works I will add a NVidia AGP and a SSE3 Prescott P4) 1 GB Ram IDE HD set on the primary and is the only drive And this may be my problem LaCie D2 Firewire/usb combo DVD-RW DL External on USB Okay. My bios supports USB boot and it boots sorta. I use the same drive for the ibook with no problems. I have burned the disk in toast several times and the last time at 1x. The drive boots and starts thru the boot loading drivers and then it seems to have a prob with iousbfamily and starts the dreaded "still waiting for root device" I have tinkered with bios settings switched the drive from slave to master and back several limes finally disconnected the cd no luck I have tried 2 dif distros JaS 10.5..4 client server and Kalyway 10.5.2 Any ideas? I am not wanting to buy an internal dvd if I don't have to so don't just be flip and say "Buy an internal" unless u know that for sure. And if thats the solution, what kind? Yes this is a necro post, but I'd like to add that the keyboard was also the offender in my Kalyway install on an Athlon X2. I got passed the "Waiting for root device" by enabling safe boot and some other flags, but I read this post, unplugged my PS/2 keyboard that I was using, and it works flawlessly now. Damn old keyboards! Looks like I have to get a USB one for misc repairs now.

I just unplug the PS/2 Mouse/Keyb and put in a USB adapter and..... WORKS!! finally can boot the Leo4All installer!!, after I try almost everything, I never can imagine to do this! But ! works! At least start the installation, still wating to finish, THANKS GOD I find this exceptional and unconventional solution!
