rschultz101
the right step, but microsoft still a problem, - IE and Media player, wasted my time, and opened back doors for viruses, and spyware,... - big problem, still can't buy a laptop / desktop, without microsoft windows/vista, they still force the suppliers to ship with MS, and they have to pay royalties, that means, I have to pay for it. If I buy a piece of hardware, I should not be forced to pay microsoft for software !? (aka, linux, solaris, or otherwise) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90511-eu-fines-microsoft-record-899-million-euros/page/2/#findComment-647530 Share on other sites
xtraa
lol, you got that option because of the EU, Microsoft changed it so you could, you've just got no idea have you. eot Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90511-eu-fines-microsoft-record-899-million-euros/page/2/#findComment-648050 Share on other sites
Forceman
Just so you know where Apple stand. 1. Don't even have Opera Installed but their is a option for it regardless. 2. iTunes, Safari, iChat and QuickTime can be removed just the same way as any other program buy dropping them in the trash. 3. Safari has a default RSS reader option so you can pick your own as well. 3. Mail has a default RSS reader option so you can pick your own as well. Forceman
Yes it's because they were forced to do that, honestly, you have no clue about the situation at all and about your own OS. You think that would have been there if Microsoft didn't get told to make their OS more competition friendly. Introduced into XP SP1 Microsoft executives this week said that other new changes in Service Pack 1 will comply with a November settlement that Microsoft agreed upon with the Justice Department and nine states. Nine other states and the District of Columbia are continuing with the antitrust litigation. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, who is overseeing the remedy portion of the trial, has not yet approved the settlement Under the Justice Department settlement, Microsoft must allow consumers or PC makers to hide user access to five pieces of so-called middleware: Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger and Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine. You people dont even know why that option was put in the OS. BTW, known Mac fanboy eh?, I dont even own a Mac and I use OS X(hack) and Linux. Would you like me to explain all the things I dont like about Apple and that I've never spent a penny on them? head
I totally agree with sdracer. Apple is doing the exact same thing, but they are not as rich as MS so the EU don't go after them. You will see, when Apple gets enough of the market share they'll be complained at to death as well and maybe the fines will even bankrupt them. EU is just going after MS to steal their money. yeah sure. its like i would say "america is invading other countries to get money". its just too short, a sentence without any explanations... i think americans have a problem with everything that comes from the eu...but thats another point... just think about it: 1. apple has no monopole like microsoft 2. even if, apples strategy would be to cooperate with the eu, not playing "hide and seek" (or completely ignore them)... 3. its not about certain parts of the software, its about the information you (have to) give out - microsoft, since ever, has important secrets which drive other competitors out of the race (beginning with the ntfs-standard, which is why macs cannot write on it - microsoft simply does not publish the code it would need) so open your eyes just a little more - its not the "evil eu", its a law that is important for the market, the americans should ask themselves why their government doesnt have such things... Forceman
Apple were fined for iTunes by the way, sometimes it's a simple case of being a monopoly gets you fined even though people CHOOSE to use iTunes. iTunes don't come with Windows so there is no anti-trust there, the anti-trust lies because your popular your not trust worthy. Microsoft products that come with Windows are NOT popular and come with Windows like Windows comes with PC's. I wish people would understand this, there's a difference and until Apple do exactly what Microsoft did then there's no case. You think the EU are not watching Apple?, think again and if they break the rules like Microsoft then they WILL be dealt with. To be fair to the U.S, they did do something during the Clinton years, in the U.S anti-trust cases where brought against Microsoft and they were split up, it's only the Bush administration that didn't take it any further. A Nonny Moose
There is a difference though between having a monopoly and having monopoly power. While I'm not familiar with EU laws regarding monopolies, was this is a case of being punished for being a monopoly or was it a case of being punished for using their monopoly power? If it's the former choice (being punished just for being a monopoly) then it's a bad ruling. If it's the other (using their monopoly power to destroy any competition), then the ruling is a good one (competition is a good thing).
