~pcwiz
I'm planning on giving the Kalyway 10.5.2 Combo updater a shot. I have an MBR install of Kalyway 10.5.1 with EFI and vanilla. My top secret plan 1) Install the Kalyway 10.5.2 combo updater 2) Reboot and repair permissions 3) Install Kalyway kernel package (vanilla kernel) 5) Reboot and repair permissions again 6) Install Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 7) Reboot and repair permissions again Does that sound OK? eddie11c
Just install the combo update, before you restart once installer finishes run the update for the kernel. Saves you another reboot. When you do the graphics update remember if your graphics card is not natively supported you will have to boot in single user mode to remove the updated kexts to avoid the kernel panic. ~pcwiz
OK I see. That graphics update part is kinda scary. How do I know if my card is natively supported. Its a 7900GS. What kexts would I have to remove if it wasn't supported? qbattersby
Hey pcwiz, I did the combo update from kaly, repair and reboot, did the kernel after I was certain everything was good, rebooted, and then installed the graphics update with my 7800GT, no problems since. I was definitely nervous about it however as it is my main machine, but everything went off without a hitch. As for kexts, I would just backup your entire extensions folder and then if graphics doesnt work copy back over the geforce and nvidia related kexts. Be sure if you are overwriting files you save a backup if worse comes to worse. Good Luck! isotome
I have a PNY GeForce 7900 GS in my Hackintosh setup. I did the Kalyway 10.5.2 Combo update with NO problems. Your video card should be fine. Combo update and graphics update went smooth- keep in mind I have an Intel Bad Axe 2 based system. I have read some good things about your DS3P mobo. I think you have little to worry about. ~pcwiz
I am happy to say that the update worked and that I'm successfully running 10.5.2 I just wish that shutdown and restart worked, but maybe thats too much of a luxury Goodie I'm gonna do the update right now, will get back on how it goes NOOOO!! DISASTER!I restarted after the Kaly update and it won't boot it seems I boot it in verbose mode and it goes through everything fine. It gets to the end and it says something about my NTFS Windows drive, then it says SAM Read or Write failed. And then black screen comes up, boom computer shuts down or restarts, its just a black screen with no output to the monitor. What do I do? Should I go in through MacDrive from Windows and replace the installed kernel with netkas's? NEVER MIND What I assumed to be a black screen, left it on for a couple minutes and OS X came back on! Onto the kernels and the graphics update Progress: Install Kalyway Combo Update [Done] Repair permissions and install vanilla kernel [Done] Repair permissions and install Leo Graphics Update [Done] Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90434-please-share-experiences-with-kalyway-1052-combo-updater/#findComment-646479 Share on other sites
P2iM-0
Wow, I wish I had as much success as you guys. I'm running Kalyway 10.5.1 on my IBM T60P and did not have so much luck with the Kalyway 10.5.2 update. I tried installing the update on my system and after rebooting it would never boot up again. It hung after the "BSD ROOT $DISK #{:content:}quot; line. If i remember correctly, it would never make it to the "Jettisoning kernel linker" message. So I tried checking which extensions were updated and replacing some with old packages. I couldn't get it to boot back up. My laptop's keyboard/mouse wouldn't work during single user sign on either, had to use an external USB keyboard. I reinstalled OS X completely back to Kalyway 10.5.1 -- tried the 10.5.2 combo update again and it worked...KINDA. I would have to wait about 2+ minutes additional to normal boot time for the system to boot up every time, it would sit there and wait after it launched the LoginWindow.app. Finally the monitor would sync and log in, but it was a bit rediculous. The boot time also seemed to increase as I tried getting my GPU working (ATi FireGL v5250 -- X1700 mobility). I got too sick of waiting and just went back to 10.5.1. Anyone know if there is a specific list of all improvements in 10.5.2, I noticed the new TimeMachine icon in the top right, but not much else... Hope others have better luck with the 10.5.2 update. I'll probably try again soon just because somewhere deep down I'm convinced I can get it to work by tooling with it. -P2 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90434-please-share-experiences-with-kalyway-1052-combo-updater/#findComment-646772 Share on other sites
~pcwiz
P2iM-0 First of all, I had no success on the first 3 boots or so after the install either. Only on the 4th or 5th boot did it do something. You fix the 2 minute boot problem by installing the kalyway kernels package Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90434-please-share-experiences-with-kalyway-1052-combo-updater/#findComment-646801 Share on other sites
P2iM-0
pcwiz, How dare you give me hope! elkotur
Hello guys, I have installed kalyway 10.5.2 update and everythings goes right, but with leopard graphics update I lost my screen properties (Intel GMA950 onboard), now I I have only 1024x768, no quartz, no refresh rates Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90434-please-share-experiences-with-kalyway-1052-combo-updater/#findComment-647118 Share on other sites
PlayingKarrde
I tried doing the kaly 10.5.2 update and that worked but doing the kernels made my computer constantly reboot after darwin. I couldn't even see why it was doing it. Whats the benefit of doing this anyway? My 10.5.1 works perfectly well... Also, what's the point of the Apple Graphics update as well? The nvidia kext installer I used said it used drivers from this anyway so I wasn't planning on doing it myself after all the updates... But since I had to reinstall Leo from scratch i decided I wouldn't bother trying to update again. Yuusharo
PlayingKarrde - If your computer was constantly restarting after darwin its because it either can't find the kernel or someone went wrong and it became corrupted or didn't have the right permissions set on it. I believe you can use the terminal or use "Change Finder" to make hidden files visable, backup the current 10.5.1 kernel (9.1.0) to the desktop, rename it to "vanilla" and put it back to the root of your startup disk. Now, you can try to update again and if it doesn't work, type "vanilla" on the darwin bootloader to use the older kernel. Not a great solution, but if you tried to update again and it failed, you at least had a backup plan. Its up to you though. 10.5.2 is definitely an upgrade you should get if you can - major OS tweaks and fixes. The graphics update is basically downloading the 9C31 kexts to the system as a seperate update from 10.5.2. You need this if you want to use an EFI gfx string using those files (In my case, for the 8800GT). If you installed the nvidia installer like you did, you won't need this. Some people say it broke their system - mine was fine with or without it (and I've installed it once with NVInject and once without on another leo install). PlayingKarrde
Yuusharo, very interesting. Thank you for the information. I might try that then. I suspect though that the issue arose all the way back when I installed Kaly in the first place. I couldn't get it working with vanilla kernels so didn't install them. When doing the Kaly kernel update I think I chose to do the vanilla kernel update rather than the patched ones. Could this be the reason why? If 10.5.2 is as good as you say then I might be convinced to take that extra step once again. Worst case and I have to reinstall again, well its not the end of the world. I've installed Leopard about 10 times already so one more won't hurt. Yuusharo
I feel your pain, lol. Well what I did last night was backup everything and essentially "practice" installing all the way through 10.5.2 and getting all my hardware up. This way I learn things of what I can do, what I can't do, etc. Your mileage will vary, so be sure to take it one at a time. 10.5.2 has a few cosmetic changes, like list-view for stacks and the ability to toggle the translucent menu bar, but has a lot of fixes for other various programs. I've also noticed that running off my EFI string for the 8800GT on 10.5.2 is faster and 'snappier' than the final nvidia installer (v.33) on 10.5.1. Again, your mileage will vary. Also, I can run Vanilla kernels on my system, but right now I'm using Netkas ToH Shutdown kernel 9.2.0 to have 100% shutdown and restart. Sleep mode is gone, but I rarely use it anyway. Beerkex'd
I installed the combo update with no problems. I haven't installed the kernel update yet. I had previously installed the graphics update from scottdangel's blog. So after installing the Kalyway update I downloaded the official Apple graphics update and installed it. Then I used macdrive from Windows XP to put a backup of my modified kexts from scottdangel's installer (which had now been overwritten by the graphics update) into the extensions folder. Then I booted with the install DVD and used disk utility to repair permissions. Rebooted a few times because it would halt at various points. Suddenly it just decided to work, and now it works every time I boot...I think. Haven't tested it that much yet. Boot time is roughly double of what it was before. I guess I'll try the SSE3 EFI kernel from the kernel update and see what happens. /edit.. That wasn't a good idea, got a kernel panic on bootup right away. I don't know how to resolve that so I've gone back to the SSE2/SSE3 ToH kernel from iATKOS 1.0ir2. westwaerts
Sleep-restart-shutdown after updating from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 with new kernel and graphic update following changes appear: sleep ( automatic) run in 10.5.1, now it doesnt. restart works now, didnt before. btw, tried the new netkas kernel, which i cannot use, because graphics are away, returning from sleep. Beerkex'd
The 10.5.2 update f***s with the settings in the audio/midi control panel. If you lose audio in certain games (Quake 4, Doom 3) after updating, go to the audio/midi control panel in utilities and make sure your output device is set to 2ch 44k. Beerkex'd
As I found out earlier (see my former posts in this thread), the Kalyway 10.5.2 kernel update package doesn't work on iATKOS 1.0ir2 updated with the Kalyway 10.5.2 combo update. I wanted to reinstall, but my iATKOS DVD had decided to self destruct, so I grabbed Kalyway 10.5.1 instead which I hadn't tried before. What a breeze it was to install. Here's what I did: Installed OS, chose SSE2 kernel and MBR boot, nothing else. Everything working. Installed Apple Security Update for 10.5.1 Ran the Kalyway combo update. Got the boot delay problem. Ran the Kalyway (SSE2/SSE3) kernel update, fast boot time restored! Installed Apple Graphics Update for 10.5.2 Modified video kexts + NVInject to get hardware acceleration working Installed AppleSMBIOS.kext from here: http://my.macdotnub.info/content/view/19/26/ I didn't encounter any problems while doing this, it's working great. Just remember to fix permissions, kids!
