Just asking if anyone has had any luck with multicore systems running OSx86. If so, what motherboard and CPU are you using and were there any tricks to getting it to work?

I'm currently using a Latitude D820 with one of the cores disabled and I'm really happy with it (minus the NIC of course, damn broadcom). I just have plans to put together a new desktop and would like some suggestions.

Thanks!

when you say " getting a dual core to work actually worth the performace" you sound like it is hard. It is much harder to get a single core to work in leopard than a dual core. Core 2 duos are the most compatible processors for leopard.. and they are very much so worth it.

This is news to me! It's certainly not a crappy laptop (might be in the OSx86 world) but I had no idea so many people we're using multi cores.

Mtotho, are there any special tricks to getting the Quads to work? Or did the OS just pick it up and run with it? Also, is there a different mobo you recommend over your Asus?

i had no problem getting the quad to work (other than i had to enable a setting in the bios.. which goes for dual cores as well on certain boards).

Many boards work with quad cores perfectly.. The asus p5w dh is the best hackintosh ive had.. and ive had 3 different top of the line hacks. Very compatible series of boards you may want to look at is the GA-P35-DS3*. The DS3L works great.. only thing is with AHCI enabled.. only 2 of the 4 sata ports work.

in my laptop lg e500 with dual core 2 , chipset intel 965 and msi 1636 mobo is imposible at the moment to run macos with two cores, only the option cpus=1 run de os, i have tried all the kernels and always the same

And I've noticed after a little research, Dell's motherboards don't do dual core in OS X too well. As far as I can tell, no one has been able to get both cores working on the Latitude line (which is what I have).

Yeah...something in the Dell BIOS/mobo doesn't play well with OS X. I have an Inspiron 6400 C2D and can't use both cores...it's a work laptop so I was just playing. Went back to Windows on it since I have to use daily for the job.

Other laptop brands have better success with multi-core. As far as desktops go, see my sig for the 3 I run...all were easy setups with very little patching.

Good luck :)

@cody, sli boards are far more difficult.. and much less perfect for installing leopard.. though it is possible. Also, of course SLI will not work on osx. There is no support for the 9600gt yet (i dont believe). And the 9600gt is not that good (i am sure future 9000s will be good tho). Also, SLI is not as good as is it thought to be... ive had a 680i sli and dual 8800gts 640mb.. i could play all of my games full video (supreme commander, call of duty 4, etc) but then i got the asus p5w dh.. got rid of a 8800gts.. cant tell a difference in game playing at all.

That's kinda what I needed to know (about the SLI issues). As for the 9600gt, several of the reviews I've read have stated that they come very close to and sometimes even out perform some of the 8800 cards. And at $179, it's hard to say no to that. I'll probably wait for the OSx86 community to get comfertable with em first and then get one. Who knows, might get a 9800 at that point.

What was the setting on your MoBo you had to enable to get the Quad to work?

Yeah - as far as I can tell, theres no fix for dell multi-core laptops at the moment. I also have the d820, and I would be using osx as my main OS if it weren't for this issue. hopefully somebody can fix this (I know that with the vanilla system its the efi emulation that interacts with the bios - maybe a special dell laptop efi emulator? I dont know though - I'm pretty new to this.)

Is there something you can try changing in the BIOS settings to get 4 (quad) cores working?

I have a Asrock 4Core1600P35-WIFI (Intel P35 chipset) and everything is working fine (8800gtx, sound, vanilla kernel) but I have to use the cpus=1 or else OSX won't boot (endless rebooting). Could there be something I missed and still can try ?

Thanks in advance.
