  1. Multi Core on OSx86

    Yeah...something in the Dell BIOS/mobo doesn't play well with OS X. I have an Inspiron 6400 C2D and can't use both cores...it's a work laptop so I was just playing. Went back to Windows on it since I have to use daily for the job. Other laptop brands have better success with multi-core. As far as desktops go, see my sig for the 3 I run...all were easy setups with very little patching. Good luck
  2. Blu-Ray Wins The Format War!

    I think we could all do without the childish insults...you are how old and want to be treated as an adult? Act older then. Let's keep on topic...Blu-Ray wins. One of the other advantages to the more expensive Blu-Ray manufacturing process is the addition of the scratch-resistant coating. The discs are less prone to severe scratches than the thinner coated HD-DVD/DVD process. The larger capacity is nice...and if computer manufacturers will hurry up and embrace this format with BD-ROM and BD-Recorders then the prices will drop through volume. Imagine a 25GB single-layer BD-R disc of Divx files...entire season of your favorite TV show on 1 disc. Much cheaper than HD space and makes a HTPC (or media center like my PS3) kick ass. Now that the format has achieved dominance we need to adopt it and show demand, because only demand will lower prices. Not at first of course...any consumer cycle never works that way. But once all manufacturers and studios/developers start producing en masse in competition for the consumer's $$$, the price wars will begin. Everyone attacks Sony like they were trying to destroy the world or something. They were trying to create a new format that everyone could use, and of course they implemented it into their products. Trying to develop technology like that is only good business sense...no one here has ever run a multi-billion dollar company so we aren't in a position judge. If I developed a new technology or format I'd try like hell to get everyone to use it so I could make $$ every time a unit was sold. Ensures my future. Look at it this way...after all the failures Sony made, they finally have a winner. And their failures have helped fuel development that ultimately benefit who? Us...the consumers. I'm just glad the format "war" has been settled and now efforts by all involved will be to improve it and create content and hardware for it. Once again, good for us. Peace

    Get an e2180 Pentium Dual-Core for the $$. It is an Allendale Core 2 Duo chip with 1MB cache, and they are strong overclockers too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819116052 $84.99 I have mine overclocked to 3.0GHz.

    It's a little flimsy in some areas and the power supply is loud as hell, but it's not a terrible unit. I'll replace the PS some day.... I've used worse...I've also used far better.
  5. New Mac Pro with SLI

    OK...so using an older, hacked driver you can get close to native SLI performance on some chipsets. I say this because the forum topics I read on the hacked driver shows mixed results. A BIOS/chipset tweaked by the GPU manufacturer for the SLI system will still perform better, but I'm not a fan of nVidia's chipsets. (Now...seeing this, don't think I won't screw around with it on one of my systems running XP just for kicks.) Now...this thread is about SLI in a Mac Pro. Not a Hackintosh using BIOS, but a real Mac. Macs use EFI...video card must communicate with the EFI on bootup or it does not work. So if the Mac video card does not have a SLI connector then you are out of luck before you even get started. If it does, then you have to determine if a generic BIOS-based PCIe video card in a second slot will function without registration to the EFI system. Remember, EFI performs the functions that BIOS does, which is setting up the IRQ/timing/DMA. Many people have tried putting regular PC video cards in the Mac as a second monitor (not even attempting SLI) and they simply do not work. They have to be EFI cards. Even if the Mac video card has SLI, I doubt that it would function as a "bridge" for a second card to actually work. And then you get to start addressing drivers in OS X... The OS does not matter at this level...so booting Windows with hacked drivers isn't even part of the equation. If the EFI does not register the card correctly then the OS does not have a clue what is sitting in the slot. Mac users have wished for years that they could use cheaper, generic PC video cards. Macs have used AGP and PCI/PCIx/PCIe for years now, but video cards had to support Open Firmware and now EFI or they just will not work. Apple will not begin to implement SLI on an Intel 5000 chipset because that would {censored} off nVidia. nVidia wants you to buy their chipset for SLI, but no nVidia chipset supports dual processor Xeons. nVidia is a big supplier to Apple, so they wouldn't risk it. Without Apple supporting it, it probably won't happen. Anyway, I stand corrected on the SLI on non-SLI chipsets...I remember the days of having to move jumpers to allow SLI on older nForce chipsets. Interesting to see driver hacks allowing it now. Work doesn't allow me the time to dig into hardware/sfotware engineering like I used to, so I'm getting a touch behind. As far as the Mac system go, I am up to date on it since work has pushed me to get my Apple Certified Technician status for both Desktops and Laptops. Thanks for the info on Guru3D....it gives me something else to tinker with.
  6. I have the 965-DS3 mobo also and I installed using Kalyway 10.5.1 using the GUID EFI (HD is formatted GUID) and Vanilla Kernel options and it works just fine. I have all my IDE ports set to IDE mode (not AHCI) and they all show up (both orange ICH8R and purple Jmicron sets). I recommend getting the Kalyway DVD and using it. The only thing I had to do was patch the Audio with the HDA patcher, 3-port option. SATA DVD and 500GB SATA boot drive plugged into ICH8R ports.
  7. e2180 not the same as core duo so not as compatible?

    One of my machines is running an E2180 with EFI and Vanilla kernel. Updates from Apple worked just fine. System Profiler shows it as a "2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo" The stripped down cache is the only real difference from the e6xxx series...and the e2xxx series chips tend to overclock around 50% with the right motherboard. Many people have reported 3.0 - 3.4GHz speeds from them with a better cooler/fan and a high FSB motherboard.

    You cannot use the Vanilla kernel...that is only for Core based CPUs. Your P4 must use the patched kernel. Only by upgrading to a Core series CPU will you be able to use the stock kernel and have full use of Software Update.
  9. New Mac Pro with SLI

    The Mac Pro uses a server-style motherboard running the Intel 5000 series chipset. Dual-socket 771 supporting the LGA 771 Xeon processors. Using SLI requires a nVidia chipset. Crossfire can be implemented on Intel chipsets but requires some tweaks to the mobo that the Mac Pro does not have. You also cannot use a generic PCIe video card in the Mac Pro because it uses EFI, so the flash ROM on the video card must be programmed for EFI. PC video cards like you get anywhere are all for use in a BIOS environment. This is similar to the older PowerPC based Macs...they used Open Firmware as the BIOS and only cards programmed for OF would work. That was why you couldn't grab any AGP video card and plug it in. I haven't looked at the cards inside the Mac Pro, but even if they have an SLI connector neither the Flash ROM or the EFI system are programmed to activate it. The motherboard still has to supply the data to the cards' via the PCIe bus and without the BIOS/EFI set to direct the traffic correctly it wouldn't work right. This is why you have to turn SLI "on" in a normal PC BIOS. It changes the way the video cards register themselves to the driver.
  10. x86 Xbench Results Thread

    I've installed the ZFS Beta Seed 1.1 from the Apple Developer Connection. It has some impressive speeds, even with a single SATA drive. I'll play with the RAID-Z setting in a few days when I get a matched HD cleared off to use. We'll see how it goes...maybe Apple will get a full-blown implementation of it in a bootable form. Thanks to Wesley8 for tipping me off on this version...something to play with now.
  11. x86 Xbench Results Thread

    Try running Xbench with your boot drive and post the results then. Your System Profiler shows your boot disk as being "Leopard" and the disk you tested with as being "zfsn" I bet your Xbench will be in line with the results being posted by everyone else. I'm going to dig into it some more...I had read about ZFS some time ago but it is interesting to see a Mac implementation of it and those are some brutal numbers. I'll probably install on one of my machines to play with... In fairness, most people here are benchmarking the boot drive. Thanks for adding to the post and clearing it up. I'll be watching the ZFS development more closely now...I may have a new idea for my media storage.
  12. x86 Xbench Results Thread

    You must be running the HDD test with RAM disk or something...I've never seen OS X get scores like that with a real HD. Your Xbench screenshot has the drive removed...it should show up in the list just below "Model - P5K-E" and above "CPU Test" What is being hidden or changed? An "Uncached Write" performance of almost 3GB per second? Sounds suspicious to me.

    No...my systems are running without any drivers...they're passengers only. -end sarcasm- Please be a bit more specific on exactly what hardware you are interested in and you will probably get a helpful answer...such a vague question taking up space on the boards is not really appreciated by all the other members.
  14. Dell E1505 Users...

    I have an Inspiron 6400 (basically the same, but Intel graphics) but I haven't attempted the install yet due to the issues many users have with certain Dell laptops. I believe the 1505/6400 with the Core2Duo CPU suffers from the slowness/stuttering unless you disable one core with the CPUS=1 startup flag. This is an issue with the BIOS and I don't believe it has been solved yet.   15. Question about updating Leopard

    I'm going to assume silfer has an AMD CPU since the AMD SSE2/SSE3 disc was specified in the first post. AMD users should double check the forums before updating anything since they cannot run a stock vanilla kernel and need to patch more files before they can be used. Anyone not running a vanilla kernel and PC_EFI should show caution before updating. Even EFI patched systems run the risk of updated files replacing patched extensions and disabling sound/network/video...you get the idea. Before I do any updates I plug in an external USB drive and back up the entire system now. Since I run all Intel machines, I can't advise you on the success...I can only recommend you backup before you try and be prepared to repatch or reinstall stuff.
