Don't take my word for granted (I'm not an specialist in any way) but you should look with more detail into the 8 GB thing. AFAIK, only some Intel chipsets (recent Santa Rosa and a few others) are able to take advantage of more than 3.3 GB. I'm not telling it won't support it, it will take it with no problem, but it will be mostly wasted. According to what I read, only recent (or high-end) chipsets have a 36 bit controller, that would enable memory mapping up to 16 GB without needing of PAE, as long as the OS can handle it (64 bit OSes, like Leopard).

For example, I have 4 GB installed, but only 3.3 GB (the limit for the 32 bit controller in my mobo) are effectively used by Leopard, even when it can see it all and reports full 4GB:

Do the math on the graph, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Besides, Photoshop and After Effects shows a maximum amount of usable memory around 3.2 GB. Some people in this forum are having problems just by having 4 GB installed, and are being forced to take out a DIMM or using boot switches (maxmem=2048) to limit the amount of memory used by the OS.

Again, I'm not discouraging you, I'm just saying you may want to do some research before buying that amount of memory, or that motherboard. I know for sure that BADAXE 1 does have this problem, but I don't know about BADAXE 2. Maybe some BADAXE 2 owner would want to post their findings here.

well if the Mobo specifications are 8 gigs than i would think it can use 8 gigs.

any input on other parts?

Graphics card?

My D945GCL said support for 4GB. It has 4GB installed, but the chipset is 32bit, and thus not even 64bit operating systems see the full RAM. Intel made a big mistake in that marketing.

The Bad Axe 2 shouldn't suffer from any problems like that.

That PSU is midrange and not very efficient; I suggest modular 120mm with >80% efficiency, Antec/Zalman/Seasonic/Enermax. I've seen that CPU cooler, but wondered at how the butterfly branding would effect cooling performance better than a rectangular cooler would affect it. I suggest Thermalright towers. That case is for hot and overclocked components as it has multiple vents to leak noise and shortcircuit airflow. I suggest Antec, eg. the P182. That is a 0.5TB HD. The CPU is a good one for the price, but the new CPUs are coming into the market with better performance. That motherboard is OSX86 compatible, yet not the best choice in PC motherboards compared to ASUS/Gigabyte P35 chipset boards. This paragraph is extremely short commentary, so if anyone would like to disagree, understand this is an opinion in shorthand.

okay is the graphics okay?

i ment a total of 1.5 TB HDD (3 of them)

so could you give me a link to a good PSU than?

thanks!

also> if im using a 8800 GT and over clocking my Q6600 than wouldn't a case with better airflow and more vents be a good thing?

Well, the new nVidia cards are forthcoming this and next month. I'd suggest a 9600GT when it's out since it'll be cheaper and run cooler than the highend cards. And yet, it won't quite match the 8800GT, so if you're doing games at high resolution, I'd wait for the 9800GT. I don't remember which card was the G92 core, IIRC it was the 8800GTS, and since games now seem to be limited by the videocard, the more power the better. I have no idea about OSX86 compatibility for these cards. I went with GMA950 on my OSX86 box.

Instead of three 500gb drives, I'd suggest a single 1TB drive by Hitachi or Samsung. It'll be faster, quieter, more efficient, and you won't have to split file organization strangely. Maybe you were thinking about RAID, but that sounds less reliable with OSX86.

Vents on the side shortcircuit airflow (eg. drawing air from the side of the case rather than the front, reducing HD cooling) and let noise out. If you really need to overclock, get a case with more/larger fans. A PSU with a 140mm fan would help, as well as a fan on the top and back of the case. A case with multiple exhaust fans is the ideal, since an intake in serial won't add cooling performance. I've always hated side fans, but you can always tape it up if it isn't necessary. Cheap cases are fine if you're only building one and don't mind doing some modifications (tape, tin snips, etc), but I like Antec.

I'd suggest the Gigabyte Odin PSU, the cheapest one of that line. Enermax Galaxy PSUs are good I'm told. The specs you want are most likely >80% efficiency (lower power bill, reduced heat waste), modular (cleaner case interior), 120mm to 140mm fan (twice the airflow for the same noise), and 500w or better. High wattage PSUs are unnecessary, at least until you start looking into dual-cpu quad-SLI with 8 HDs. Do not get a cheap PSU, or use the one that just comes with a case.

I'd suggest moving in this direction-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835109125

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822145141

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811129025

(or cheaper, like the SLK3000, NewEgg doesn't carry many by Antec like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16811129032)

NewEgg isn't carrying much by Thermalright and the prices are higher. If you can buy elsewhere, I'd suggest the Thermalright HR-03 GT for the videocard, and the ULTRA-120 Extreme for the CPU. For fans, Noctua, Yate Loon, and Antec's Tricool have been doing well.

Are there any reports of people using the 9600gt successfully?

I had one of those Bad Axe 2 boards. Rip off, I sent it back. Lot better boards to be had for $230 bucks.

If I were you I'd pair down the ram, find a cheaper board that has real overclocking features, get a decent PS, and get a nice liquid cooling kit. That thing is gonna sound like a Huey taking off.

ive built 2 badaxe 2 systems and they work great, but i wouldnt buy that mobo now.. i actually just bought an asus maximus and it works out of box 100% with kalaway 10.5.1 and guid efi vanilla

i didnt know about that ram thing. thats wierd.. i have 8 gb and menu meters says 1700 used 6500 free but then activity monitor shows this

picture2vk1.png

im confuesd by inactive and free, also where do you check if leopard is running in 64 bit mode?

I've been reading posts like a madman, and also decided on the Badaxe2, and the Q6600. (I'm getting the XFX Geforce 8600 though because its so cheap $69)

There seems to be a lot of people who have this set-up, and say it works great. As well these people seem active in the forums, and very helpful. If something happens in say 10.5.4 it will be good to have such a popular board. I'm willing to sacrifice some $ and speed for dependability.

I'm picking up my Gear on Thursday!

Goodluck!

leopard is running in 64bit mode in default.

what's wrong with your activity monitor's report??

inactive + wired + active = memory used

free + memory used = 8G

For the motherboard, try the Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/DS3R... I have it and works great! Just needed patching the audio which wasn't a problem at all! I suggest you get that.

I have a question about the 9800GT, my current graphics card has stopped working and I need to buy a new one. So, will the 9800GT work? I was going to go with a 9600GT but I read that it wasn't supported. So please help me!
