Hi, I've been checking out these great forums for quite some time now.

It's my first time building a computer so bare with me.

These are parts I'm thinking of using. Will they work?

Mobo: GA-P35-DS3R

processor: Q6600

ram: 2 x 2 GB Corsair XMS2 (800Mhz)

harddrives: 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 250 GB

Dvd: Samsung WriteMaster SH-S203B

Case: Arctic-cooling Silentium T4 ECO 80

Cpu fan: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

firewire: IOGear 3-Port Firewire PCI Card

Graphics: BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 (320 MB) - Maybe!!! Any suggestions would be nice

I'm not quite sure on the graphic card yet, as i know little about them. It would be nice with some gaming now and then...

I will be following mtotho's wellwritten guide, as it seems pretty easy.

I would also know how to overclock it to a stable 3,0Ghz (hence the Cpu fan).

Please let me know if I have forgotten something in my buyinglist.

Thanx

Thanks for your response. I have checked the compatibility lists and forums, and the Mobo and processor should work.

I was interested in hearing what advice people with the same processor and mobo setup would give me, before I start buying.

Also which graphic cards are good (around 150$).

And last some advice on overclocking to a stable 3,0Ghz

Thanx

So you're looking for a $150 card, yet listed the 8800GTS[old version is like $350 or something]? O.o

At any rate..the 8600GT is good enough for everyday usage and it's $100 and futureproof(directx 10), but if you don't care about that, look into the GF 7300 or GF 7600, or perhaps the GF 7900.

List seems good you may want to consider the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme for the heatsink if it will fit into your case with a good silent fan in the 1400-2400rpm range and you would want USB mouse and keyboard to save the PS2 headaches plus make sure you get the G0 (SLCAR) stepping of the Q6600 it runs cooler and you will get real temperatures values when you use Temperature Monitor to see them. As well I see no mention of the wattage of the power supply should be in the 550-650 maybe 700 watt range with at least 18a on the rails for dual rail power supply 40+ on single rail power supply the 88xx series of cards recommend 24a on the dual rail. If interested in 7xxx series I have a couple of 7900gs's I run they work well and you may want to consider getting rid of the stock HSF on the video cards when I put Zalman 900-cu kits on my cards the temperatures dropped 10C+ on each of them using the lowest settings for the fan controller you can get a 1000 series for the 88xx cards which would do the same for them I imagine these are in the $40 range here and well worth it from my perspective.

For the overclock once you have it installed and booting properly you should just be able to go into the M.I.T section of the BIOS enable the option for setting the bus speed (Host control something I think it is called) set it to 334 with a 9x multiplier then the Memory set to 2x with the PCI-E controller set manually to 100 this should give you your overclock. Leave the voltages alone until you test it with Prime95 version 25.5 in Win XP small fft for max stress/temperature on the CPU. Other software to get is CPU-Z, Speedfan and Coretemp to monitor the diode temps on the chip this is the most accurate one for this, CPU-Z will give you the best voltage readings. Now on the three 775 Gigabyte boards I own the vdrop is about .1v once everything gets under load so this is to be expected when looking at the settings once your booted into windows for testing. On another note I always go for the highest overclock I can get using stock voltage with both the TM2 and C1E enabled in the BIOS, the C1E drops the voltage and multiplier when the machine is no doing any work therefore lowers the temperatures you get and in my experience does no harm whatsoever in running your machine this way on a day to day basis you want the speedstep disabled this has caused me problems.

For your memory since it would be set so low (668mhz) you may want to use CTRL + F1 keys before entering the M.I.T so you will get to see the ram timings then use 4-4-4-12 with the Prime95 blend test after having completed a few hours with no errors on the small fft's using the 4-4-4-12 for this as well just to get a little more speed if your memory is already rated for this then leave these settings alone.

Thanks for the detailed info MacUser2525, the Arctic-cooling Silentium case comes with a 550 psu.

Shouldn't the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro be able to keep the cpu cooled down at a mild overclock? The Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme is double the price, and I'm not sure it'll fit inside the case.

Secondly are there any way to test check the temperatures in leopard, I haven't got a Windows XP disc (wouldn't know which version to get, that goes for -vista as well).

Thanks again

Make sure you check the amps on the +12v rail(s) of the power supply you should be good though with a 7xxx series nvidia card as all I have in my main rig is a 550w as well 18a on both rails, now with a 8xxx the minimum they say is 24a on the rails I doubt any included power supply is going to have that.

Yeah it is a pretty big mother alright keeps everything damn cool though right now idle I am in the mid 20'sC (it is winter here so it is not that hot probably ~20C room temp) even stress testing it never hit 50C small fft 100% load for hours at a time. I had the AMD64 version of that cooler it did a decent job certainly better than the stock one for sure.

Your welcome the already mentioned Temperature Monitor program is what you want it only gives accurate temps with the G0 chips as far as I can determine with the other B revisions they seem to be off by 15-20C.
