DJ_Atom
Okay, well I have read EXTENSIVELY over all of the forums I can find as well as just about every google page on the subject, and I still cannot seem to get a deifinative answer. I have followed every guide I can find, and I still cannot seem to get this to work. I WILL NOT GIVE UP!! lol Okay, well I downloaded the Zephiroth AMD 10.5.1 iso and burned it to DVD+R with Nero. I also created a seperate FAT32 Partition on my Hard Drive (which is IDE) of 10 gigs. I boot from CD/DVD and it will go through a bunch of lines of code and then give me these two (which have become infamous with me) lines of code... ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure Still Waiting on Root Device Still Waiting on Root Device Still Waiting on Root Device And it just keeps going and going. Anyways, needless to say, I am stuck like glue... If someone can finally give me a definative answer I would really appreciate it! My specs are posted below. It happens to EVERYONE with that chipset (including me) - it's not well supported in the Zephyroth 10.5.1 install. It's been discussed at length. Your DVD will work with the generic drive support the installer first uses - as soon as it tries to load ACTUAL drivers you LOOSE your drives including your optical drive (hence the "still waiting...") Your options are these: - rebuild the installation .iso with the .kexts that support the SB200_400_600 chipset (way harder than it sounds but apparently doable - there are posts from those who have - find them...) - wait for Zephyroth's next release - install OSx86 to an external HD using another computer. Once installed, you can connect the external drive to the laptop and boot from the external drive. Me and others have been able to bypass "unsupported chipsets" this way. You can even move the finalized install to an internal HD, once you're satisfied it works properly. thrillhouse
Try a different release. Some might have better support than others. I don't have your board, but I have a board with SATA and have only had success with Kalyway, maybe it'll work for you too. tlovie
I had this same problem, but eventually found a solution. It seems as though this problem relates to the fact that the OS cannot find drivers for your IDE/SATA chipset. It is a known issue here http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues#toc10 They give you the solution here, but you have to find a KEXT for your chipset. I used the one here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry269689 Now, on the wiki, they say to remove the AppleNforceATA.kext, but I didn't do this. Instead, I replaced the IOATAFamily.kext and made the new installation dvd from there. Hope this helps. Tom. DJ_Atom
From what I am understanding on here, I think I have to have Mac already installed on my hard drive to edit my .kexts. How would I go about changing the kexts from within XP? Does anyone have any ideas? Rez.
I pretty much had the same problem with my Leopard install. Install DVD booted fine, Saw my Drives, Installed and when trying to boot into the new installation - Your exact same message: ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure Still Waiting on Root Device Still Waiting on Root Device Still Waiting on Root Device Here's how I personally solved it (Using Windows). I used the Kexts that I was using in Tiger for an SIS chipset. I used Macdrive to simply copy the two Kexts that I used in Tiger (In my case: Modified appleviaata.kext and Modified IOATAFamily.kext) to /System/Library/Extensions. I rebooted and loaded Leopard with no problems whatsoever. I guess if you can figure out what Kexts your system was using in Tiger - You should be set. DJ_Atom
Okay, well I have gotten one step forward in my attempt to install Leopard on my AMD board. I attempted to install it running it as a virtual machine and it bypassed my still waiting on root device error, and now sometimes it will get to the spinning beachball with the space wallpaper, but the installer still does not want to load up. Does anyone have any ideas? zonker
I installed iATKOS.r3 to the system in my sig. I had to connect BOTH an IDE HDD and an IDE DVD to install. I did NOT have to install to the IDE drive, I only had to connect the devices (I pulled the parts from my mac G4 for this). Once I did that, I got past the "still waiting for root device". I installed to my SATA drives from the IDE DVD and then after install, I shut down. I disconnected both IDE devices and am running SATA only just fine. This may solve your issues and is worth a try.
