scj312
I have been assigned to fix up an old iMac G3, running OS 8.5, which randomly freezes not allowing keyboard input or mouse clicks, but the cursor does move. It happens every 5 minutes or so and it takes a minute or two for it to start recognizing input again. I have tried different USB ports, mice, keyboards etc but it is still happening. Any ideas? Colonel
You know, my G3 is experiencing the same thing, but I thought it was just me.. If you find a solution, please share. scj312
I'm going to attempt to install Panther on it, this OS 8.5 install seems somewhat screwed up anyway. Would that possibly be it? scj312
Have you tried checking the disk for bad sectors as I've told you in my last post? How do I do that? ~pcwiz
Apple Hardware Test CD if you have it maybe? Or install OS X and put Disk Warrior on it or something... scj312
Well, I installed Panther and no freezes so far (knock on wood). Seems that the install was really just fubar'ed. scj312
Okay here's another question - the iMac's battery seems to be dead, how do I turn off that incorrectly set time warning that OS X pops up at boot? ~pcwiz
Try looking in System Preferences under Date and Time or whatever. Otherwise, just replace the PRAM battery. Its not very hard to do, and the PRAM battery can be accessed through the memory door on the back of the iMac. However, as long as you keep it plugged into a wall outlet and don't unplug it, it shouldn't bring up the warning. jake123
Aha, keeping it plugged in did the trick for now. I know at least with leopard, as soon as my computer gets to the desktop it checks / changes the time... so with panther it might do the same. ~pcwiz
Yeah, this might work even with a dead PRAM battery. Try setting your date and time in System Prefs to sync with the Apple Time Servers (time.apple.com). This way when OS X loads everytime, it should automatically adjust to the correct time.
