I have been assigned to fix up an old iMac G3, running OS 8.5, which randomly freezes not allowing keyboard input or mouse clicks, but the cursor does move. It happens every 5 minutes or so and it takes a minute or two for it to start recognizing input again. I have tried different USB ports, mice, keyboards etc but it is still happening. Any ideas?

Try looking in System Preferences under Date and Time or whatever. Otherwise, just replace the PRAM battery. Its not very hard to do, and the PRAM battery can be accessed through the memory door on the back of the iMac. However, as long as you keep it plugged into a wall outlet and don't unplug it, it shouldn't bring up the warning.

Aha, keeping it plugged in did the trick for now.

Yeah, this might work even with a dead PRAM battery. Try setting your date and time in System Prefs to sync with the Apple Time Servers (time.apple.com). This way when OS X loads everytime, it should automatically adjust to the correct time.

The owner has no internet access.
