Got a problem, even in safe mode, and got this hardware(Pentium M 725

ATI 9700 Mobile

512 MB RAM

80GB Harddrive

Synoptics Touchpad v4.6)

I noted that darwin at its boot, before specify the boot options, says that i have a 9600 128megs, but i actually have a 9700 128 megs..so it could be the same problem with 9600 friends (let me crosspost for this, it could be useful for both topics, if it won't i'll replace this with a link to the original topic)

i tried to:

1- delete ATI9700gldrive.bundle (actually renaming it, i have only win, no mac, so i don't want to DD again if i lose some files)

2- edit /System/Library/Extensions/AppleI386PCI.kext/Contents/Info.plist with my cpu->agp bridge (actually the same from davidred, pci8086,3341)

starting both in safe or not mode hangs at the same point....actually not the same, but i think for the same problem...when in safe mode it hangs with this "VGA: family specific matching fails" for 3 times, and in normal hangs at synaptic mouse recognizing, but after displaying 2 times "VGA: family specific matching fails"

so now i'm going to add at /etc/rc the ATIRadeon9700 kext, and let see if it starts or it hangs again...the bad thing is that in /Library/Log/CrashReporter/ there's no crash report except two old ones from the image that i DDed (tiger-x86-flat.img), so they don't care...this is gorgeus  :D

the problem is that i can't even boot the login, not in verbose mode it hangs always at the gray screen with the apple...

I had the same problem.. what I did was delete all of the ATI kexts and intel chipsets, I doubt I needed to delete all of them but someone suggested I do that and it worked!

Don't even try, there is some problem with something in the ATI bundles, just wish we knew what.

My AGP bridge always shows up, but if I have the ATIRadeon9700 kext left in, the last thing I see in -v is about loginwindow. Then I just get a blue mouse cursor I can move. lol. Nothing more.

Just boot w/ -x and rm or mv the offending kext if things go badly.

my problem is that even renaming the kexts and going in safe boot it even don't go after that damned "vga family ecc ecc"....deleting kexts i think doesn't resolve, they are renamed and i don't think it loads them (deleting them thru darwin it's an enourmous work, dirs must be empty to delete them, and i'm so newbie to bsd that i don't know more commands to do it)

i don't know how to do, and i don't have any error logs, because loginwindow even don't starts...there's any mode to have a specific errorlog to know something more about errors before loginwindow is loaded?

about the agp bridge i modified the kext, but i don't see anything in startup that says something about agp being recognized or not...

i really think osx hates mi pc :)

Really, Eric? That is a new one for me... You have a Moblity 9600, right?

Just go into the terminal and use the mv command to move the 9700 kext to like ATIRadeon9700.kext.old or something like that (I forget the exact name). And then reboot... At the next prompt type -f -v and see what happens.

9700 mobility, but darwin recognizes it as 9600...done all you said, with mv renamed all but none works :S didn't try vith -f but tried also with -x....i thing i've a bad luck...the only thing that i'm thinking 2do is reDD the AF partition and let's see what happens...but i don't thing it will solve it :S

So you can't even boot with a -x? If so, then there must be something fundamentally wrong with your system, thats a bit odd... The last system I used w/a mobility 9600 was one with an 855pm chipset, and I used the deadmoo image for it.

can somebody please upload an original atiradeon9700.kext file, I had moved it onto my windows drive to be able to load mac in normal mode, and I think that messed up the file cause now when I put it back in the extensions folder and try to kextload it it gives me an error saying the file isn't authentic.

Thanks!

I have the same problem than FlatEric, and a near computer (touchpad 5.x).

I've moved ATIRadeon* to ATI.old/ and when I boot with -x I got

display: family specific matching fails

then it reboots.

My 9700 128 MB is recognized as a 9600 128MB in darwin boot loader.

So, is it the end of the story ?

I have made some progress, in that I can in fact start my system with the ATI9700 extensions loaded.

By removing the ATIRadeon9700GA.plugin, I can load and log in, all seems more or less functional, though completely purple. Annoying. This also removes the "family specific matching" error that otherwise occurs.

Furthermore, I have discovered why opengl and all that depends on it does not function: the driver is never loaded. if you compare the known-to-function Intel915 extension's info.plist to the ATI ones, you will notice that the 915 specifically loads the GLDriver.bundle, using:

<key>IOGLBundleName</key>

<string>AppleIntel915GLDriver</string>

you will also notice that the 915 loads the DVDDriver in stead of the VADriver bundle for DVD support.

If you mimic this behavior, you will find that the driver loads with the GL driver, which puts us one step closer. The fact that the driver is loaded is demonstrated by one sad fact: with the GL driver loaded, programs that use opengl for rendering cause an instant and irrecoverable crash and this behavior is different from what we observe with the same drivers but without the GLDriver.

It looked for a minute like it had sometyhing to do with the fact that I have only SSE2 (I do not think the patched kernel can fix kernel extensions), but using the same drivers from Darwin801 I get the same results.

In any case, there is progress.

BTW I have noticed that loading the GA plugin along with everything else also gives you the starnge purple hue. It's very odd, but should be fixable with a custom icc profile.

come over and check us out we are working on the same problems as you are, atlest lets work together.

we now think that the tint is an endian issue with the ati driver being in big endian mode.We have the headers form ATI's driver for linux and are working on porting them to os x.i cant beleve you guys didn't see the thread about this stuff already. It would have saved you alot of time :)

hope to see you there coz i could use some help.

Hi guys,

I have Inspiron 8600 with ati radeon 9600 mobility pro turbo. I installed 10.4.3 8f1111A with all patched (+RTC fix needed for the machine to run the 10.4.3). I changed the kernel to sse2 2A version with rtc fix and now it is stable. It automatically recognized my card ( loaded the 9700 driver that had predefined my dev id). I even managed to make it start in 1920x1200 (my native lcd res). But the problems start here. I have very bad artifact . The display is actually in 1920x1200 but auqa runs only in 1600x1200 and i have blank spaced on left and right . Did somebody had this problems and found a solution ? Is there anyway to make the aqua run in 16:10 aspect ratio ? Thanks in advance ... keep up the good work.

Ohhh I forgot to mention some more problems .... the system profiler says my card has 256mb ram , and it really has 128 , and it also says it runs at PCI bus but it is actually agp. The installation I made had no AppleI386PCI.kext file in System/Library/Extensions . I downloaded this file from a 8f0*** installation .... fixed it with my agp bridge address and the at the time when I should see the blue os x loading scree my aqua crashes and stays this way so I had to remove it .... Is there any such file specially for 8f1111A install and how can I fix the wrongly reported memory .... that might be the cause for the artifacts. Thanks in advance.

I have a Sony Vaio, VGN-A290 so far I have QE and CI working great, artifacting, but not bad. However I can only get 1600x1200 working.. Itried the rc file edit and the ati9700 kext edit.

I was going to try and get my 9700 to get recognixed as a AGP, but I cna't find the file.

there is no apple1386.kext any ideas?

JaS, your link doesnt work.

I've got a Dell inspiron 8600 with a 9600, using Jas 10.4.6, and if i try to run with "ATIRadeon9700GLDriver.bundle" loaded, then i see a mouse pointer and a very artifacted ( beyond recognition; black windows, some blue and yellow artifacts ) UI.

I included the "10.4.6.Radeon.Mobility.Support".

someone seems to have this working

Installing using MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD does not cause these problems

Can anyone help?

Ok here are the results.

If I put the line;

<string>pci8086,3341</string>

Into the appropiate section in the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleI386PCI.kext/Contents/Info.plist file then my display driver now shows it as being an AGP card. However, I still cannot get the Radeon9700 extensions to load.

When the ATIRadeon9700GLDriver.bundle kext exists, the system no longer "crashes". What happens now is that the splash screen appears and then the mouse pointer appears. You can move the mouse pointer around but no actual login screen shows. It sounds like it's detecting the card, loading the module but there is something screwy with the OpenGL driver so it cannot display the GUI in accelerated mode.

I've tried combinations of OpenDarwin/OSX x86 Drivers/Different Radeon drivers (changing the vendor string), etc. Unfortunately all have the same syptoms.

But it's a positive sign that the card now shows up as being an AGP card in system profiler.

I can not find a AppleI386PCI.kext. There is no such kext in /System/Library/Extensions. (10.4.6 HOTISO). I tried greeping the dvd and there are references to this kext in allmost all Archive.bom file, but I can not find this kext on dvd...

Any ideas?

I have the *exact* same problem here, exactly the same kind of artefact, using the JAS 10.4.6 if I install the Radeon Mobility Support that comes on the 10.4.6 DVD ISO.

I also tried the callisto drivers b008, that was a definite No-Go.

do you have an intel cpu?? cuz that was my problem I have an intel and when looking on the install dvd this fix seemed to be called amd radeon fix or something, so for amd only...
