It is amazingly fast, but useless without a network or wifi driver :-( Hi Could you please help me I am losing my mind, I too have a travelmate 6460 and I've tried 4 different install disks including the Kalway install for 10.5.1 and I keep getting stuck at the disk utility saying "input/output" error. I have googled, I have experimented and I called ACER technical support asking them how to enable AHCI and the first time they hung up on me then it was straight out "I don't know". Could you please help me? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/77396-acer-laptop-users-intel/page/22/#findComment-1422797 Share on other sites

Aspire5920G
On my Acer Aspire 5920G, I managed to get the Webcam and sleep mode working on Snow Leopard 10.6.2 by using the attached IOUSBFamily.kext. It limits the USB speed to 12MB/s, but I personally think the trade-off is worth it. mechanic computer
Hi guys I'm new memeber of the forum and I got a liitle that I couldn't solve by reading up and down all the posts in the forum, well I've got an Acer 2920z with a hard drive of 250 giga byte, I made 2 partitions of 125 giga byte each and I got windows xp on my first partition and on the second one I planned to install mac os x 10.5.6 , I followed every tutorials avalaible on the web but, still nothing. The installtion process still fails at the end, sometimes when it fails it displays this message: this step of installation failed << run preinstall script for 920 spped step kernel>> and sometimes when it fails this message is displayed << the installation program couldn't boot from your hard drive, please use the disk utility to select your drive and restart to perfom the installation again>>, really i've been trying to install this version of mac for 1 months without any success, if there's anybody out there who can help me, it'd be very cool and I'll be grateful to him forever, here is my hardware configuration, the everest report: omputer: Computer Type ACPI Multiprocessor PC (Mobile) Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional OS Service Pack Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13 (IE 7.0) DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c) Computer Name XPWINDOWS7 User Name clarisse Logon Domain XPWINDOWS7 Date / Time 2010-03-28 / 05:36 Motherboard: CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Pentium T2330, 1600 MHz (12 x 133) Motherboard Name Acer Aspire 2920 Motherboard Chipset Intel Crestline-GML GL960 System Memory 2038 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM) DIMM1: Hynix HYMP112S64CP6-Y5 1 GB DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) (3-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz) DIMM3: Hynix HYMP112S64CP6-Y5 1 GB DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) (3-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz) BIOS Type Phoenix (12/13/07) Communication Port Application1 interface (COM4) Communication Port Application2 interface (COM5) Display: Video Adapter Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family (384 MB) Video Adapter Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family (384 MB) 3D Accelerator Intel GMA X3100 Monitor Plug and Play Monitor [NoDB] Monitor Plug and Play Monitor [NoDB] Monitor Plug and Play Monitor [NoDB] Multimedia: Audio Adapter Realtek ALC268 @ Intel 82801HBM ICH8M - High Definition Audio Controller Storage: IDE Controller Intel® ICH8M 3 port Serial ATA Storage Controller - 2828 IDE Controller Intel® ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850 Storage Controller A1CEBJV5 IDE Controller Disk Drive USBModem MMC Storage USB Device Disk Drive WDC WD2500BEVS-22UST0 (232 GB, IDE) Optical Drive HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N (DVD+R9:4x, DVD-R9:4x, DVD+RW:8x/8x, DVD-RW:8x/6x, DVD-RAM:5x, DVD-ROM:8x, CD:24x/24x/24x DVD+RW/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM) Optical Drive YFGX URCPEJ0D2 SCSI CdRom Device SMART Hard Disks Status OK Partitions: C: (NTFS) 116.5 GB (15.5 GB free) D: (NTFS) 116.3 GB (116.3 GB free) Total Size 232.9 GB (131.8 GB free) Input: Keyboard Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard Mouse HID-compliant mouse Mouse Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad Network: Primary IP Address 41.214.139.187 Primary MAC Address 00-1D-72-10-97-25 Network Adapter Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface (41.214.139.187) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/77396-acer-laptop-users-intel/page/22/#findComment-1436160 Share on other sites
jmciver
Looking for help installing 10.6.0 (retail DVD) onto an Acer Aspire 5610z. After the last few days of searching this forum and trying different things, I still can't get anything to work (or even boot up). Background: I have an external USB HD that I setup to install 10.6 on a Dell Mini 10v (1011) using this guide here. I set up the USB HD using my iMac currently running OS X 10.6.2. Since my Dell Mini 10v is still in the mail, I thought I would try installing 10.6 on my old Acer Aspire 5610z laptop based on internet searches stating that many people have successfully put OS X on Acer laptops. At first I attempted to install OS X using the USB HD prepped for the Dell Mini 10v. During the install, I got the main OS X install menu, was able to format the HD on my 5610z and install OS X. About an hour later, I got a "Installation Success" screen on my 5610z. However, when I attempted to reboot the laptop, I got an error message stating that I had to reboot the laptop. This same error message kept coming back. This made me think that the USB HD configured for the Dell Mini 10v install was not properly setup to install OS X on the 5610z (which did not really surprise me since the 5610z and Dell Mini 10v are very different machines). After searching this forum for a few days, I came across this thread here which is the closest thing to a guide for my 5610z that I could find (even though the model used in the guide is slightly different than mine). I reconfigured my USB HD in accordance with the guide above, including copying/modifying the kext files as indicated in the link above. However, during the boot process (in verbose mode), my 5610z would get hung up at the same spot "VoodooPS2SynapticsTouchPad loaded" over and over. I am at a loss of what to do now. System Specs: Acer Aspire 5610z (I don't know the last 4 digits, that sticker is long gone) CPU: T2060 1.6 GHz (Dual Core) RAM: 1 GB Audio: Realtek HD Audio Video: Mobile Intel 945GM Express LAN: Broadcom 440x 10/100 Wi-FI: Broadcom 802.11g Wireless Adapter All I want to do is run OS X on this laptop. I don't care about dual boot with Win XP (which is currently installed on it now). From my reading on the forums, I know there are potential issues with Wi-Fi and sound. However, for now I just want to get OS X loaded and will deal with those issues, if they are present, later. Thanks in advance for the help and please be assured that while I am a "noob" at this, I did search and try different things, but I have now run out of my area of knowledge on this subject and don't know what else to try or where to look. Hi jmciver I don't know if I will really help you but I'm gonna try as best as I can, well I'm the one who posted the topic just right above yours, and I finally succeeded installing mac os x on my computer and trust me I got lucky because everything is almost working, yet I didn't try the wifi and the ethernet but as I use a usb modem to connect to the internet so I'm not really upset now, but the sound is working fine. I know we don't have the same model of computers but it's the same house(acer), well okay here's what I did, first of all you need to format the partition of the hard drive you chose in NTFS and next you have to make that partition active so it will help you to install mac, once you have done everything to get your hard drive ready, restart your computer and get into the bios, there's an option you'll need to activate first, I noticed that step while going through many forums, and now I understood , that windows xp works fine with ide mode and mac os works with the ahci mode, let me be more precise, this is what I did, when my partition was ready to use, I restarted and got into my bios, there is an area called boot or security I don't really remember, but in this area there's an option (sata mode) by default it's set to ide mode, but if you click on sata mode, there is another option who will be available that's ahci mode, select that option and try to install your mac os again, one more time, be sure to use the disk utility to format your partition with the mac os extended (journaled) files system and for the selection of your drivers and kernels in the customization panel, I advise you to download everest and install it on your xp partition, then make a summary of all your hardware configuration and you will also need to write down some of your drivers. e.g: the sound, the wireless, the ethernet, the cpu etc.. it would help you to choose the right configuration of your computer while installing mac os, I wish this message will help you, but if you have any questions just post them here and I think the others member will be glad to help you. Let us know if everything works fine. See ya. One more thing if at random when your installation still doesn't work and you can't get back to windows do not hurry just get back into the bios and put the sata mode back to ide and restart to boot on your xp partition. bye. Hello and thanks for the reply! I am not sure I can do what you are saying about the Bios "SATA mode". There is no option in my bios, under the Security or Boot section, that has any SATA mode. The Boot menu just allows me to change the order of boot devices (i.e. CD-Rom, HD, USB HD, etc). The Security menu allows me to set/reset various passwords for the computer, but no SATA mode. If it means anything, I know my laptop only uses SATA hard drives so maybe that is why I have no option to change into a SATA mode. As far as using the Disk Utility to set up my hard drive on my Acer 5610z for the OS X install, I can't get to the Disk Utility part of the install. The only time I saw that menu, was when I used my USB HD that was configured for installing OS X on the Dell Mini 10v. I used Chameleon2 to set up my USB HD for the OS X install on the Acer 5610z (in accordance with the thread I posted above) and the computer "hangs" at the point I mentioned above. OK look go into your bios again and look for the main section not the boot or security section like I said above, sorry to have misled you, ok here you go, go into your bios and look at the main section and look for sata mode and do just like I told you to do before and if you still don't find the section, so do not worry , it means there's something else going on. first tell me how have you formatted your hard drive and have you made your selected partition as active, have you done these steps? jmciver
well I don't think the problem comes from your hard drive, sata or not sata there's always a way out. Nope, no "SATA" options in the main section of the bios. Regarding the hard drive, I am assuming you are talking about the HD inside the 5610z (I want to clarify that because I am also using a USB HD to install OS X on the 5610z and not a flash drive). The HD inside the 5610z, which is 80 GB, has not been partitioned. It currently only has one partition on it with Win XP Pro installed on it. The USB HD, which is 60 GB, was formatted using Disk Utility on my iMac: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID Partition Table. I then put OS X on the USB HD using my OS X Install DVD (Snow Leopard Retail) and Disk Utility. I don't know if this helps, but when I configured my USB HD to install OS X on a Dell Mini 10v, I used Disk Utility on my iMac and configured the USB HD almost the same as above except I used Master Boot Record instead of GUID Partition Table. Also, after I mounted the OS X install DVD on the USB HD, I ran a program called NetBookLoader instead of Chameleon2 on the USB HD. As I said before, when I attempted to install OS X using the USB HD configured for the Dell Mini 10v, the 5610z booted to the OS X Install language selection screen after a few minutes. After I chose English as my default language, the Disk Utility program opened up. From there I selected my 5610z HD and proceeded to install OS X on the 5610z. After about an hour, the 5610z said "Installation Successful" on the screen. Unfortunately, when I went to reboot the computer, I kept getting an error screen that told me to re-boot the computer. I don't know how the NetBookLoader program configured my USB HD, but so far it got me closer to getting OS X installed than when I used Chameleon2. Of course, I have no idea why it happened though...... mechanic computer
Ok after reading your post, I noticed that you used your imac to get your hard drive ready to use, but look I want you to do something, if I'm not wrong you told me the hard drive you wanna install mac os onto is an external drive ok look, do these steps, go on your xp partition and log on, and format again your usb hard drive using the hard drive management of windows go to the taskbar menu click on the window icon and right click on computer and then click on manage then you'll see your external hard drive, click on it and delete your partition and create a new one, and just follow the creation steps, and you will choose primary partition instead of logical partition and make your partition as active, and when you'll install mac again make sure to select the dual boot option if you don't do it, I think there's something which will go wrong again, ok try to do this, and I'll see where it leads to. Let me know if it still doesn't work.See you. I was only using the USB HD to install OS X on the 5610z since I know I can't just put the OS X DVD into the DVD-Rom drive of my 5610z and install OS X on the 5610z that way. I followed the guide HERE to put the OS X Install DVD and Chameleon2 onto the USB HD. I only used the USB HD for this purpose since I don't have a 16 GB flash drive. But...... I will try what you mentioned above, using Win XP on my 5610z and create a dual partition on the USB HD and see what happens..... Cool, you gotta use your acer, because I don't know how to do with imac, ok if you did exactly as I said, so start the installation process, insert your cd, and make sure your usb hd is plugged in, and launch the installation, but please this time do not forget to select dual boot, in the patche's section I guess, i don't know if it's the same thing, but I'm using ipc 10.5.6 leopard, so you have to select dual boot it will allow you to boot from 2 operating systems on different hard drive, ok, once you did that , oh by the way have you checked your hardware configuration and wrote it down somewhere, because when it will be about choosing your hardware configuration with mac you'll have to select some drivers who have something in common with your xp drivers, ok just do this, and i'll come back to check again, do not forget to format your hard drive with the utility disk in (mac os extended journaled). ok see you around. OK, I don't think I can proceed any further right now due to lack of software. You said you used IPC 10.5.6 Leopard. I assume this is a "modified" version of OS X Leopard. I only have the retail version of OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.0) that I bought in a store. If I put my OS X install DVD into my 5610z, I get a boot error (which is expected I guess). What do I have to do to "modify" my install DVD so that I can boot OS X as you have described above so that I can do the "dual boot" as you have mentioned above? Well, I'm afraid my knowledge can't go further, but if i were you,i'd download the modified version on the web go on google.com and try to find some torrents links and download that version, i don't know if I'm supposed to give you all these details, because I'm afraid to be kicked out of the forum, but anyway, let's do it, try to download the modified version on google or try to look on google about how to modify your version, I'm gonna help you a bit and look for you, but meantime i want you to do the same thing, do some researches, see you. Detosx
Haven't been around for a while. Just updated to 10.6.3 on my Extensa 5620. Here is a copy of my post from the 10.6.3 update thread:- No problems, here, with the laptop in my signature. Just removed the sleepEnabler from my Extra/Extensions folder, dragged said Extensions folder onto kextutility to repair Extra/Exensions permissions. Installed via Software update. So far no problems but early days yet. Not happy about idle temperature as measured by Temperature Monitor but they were high with 10.6.2, also, and Snow in general. Edit 1:- just tried Dashboard and... GMA X3100 now not happy in 64bit, re Core Image/Quartz Extreme. Edit 2: No joy in 64bit, for now. I prefer to stay with 10.6.3 kexts than replace with gma x3100 kexts from 10.6.2, so have I have added arch=x86_32 to my boot.plist in Extra/Extensions (you put it between the two strings under the Kernel Flags line). Working fine in 32bit. Bootup was slow-er, need to -v and see what's going on. I have not had any of the USB problems that people are reporting with 10.6.3 - discovered this because after the screen saver clicked in, I found the touch pad no longer works, so plugged in a USB mouse. Will disable the screensaver. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/77396-acer-laptop-users-intel/page/22/#findComment-1439728 Share on other sites

What do I have to do to "modify" my install DVD so that I can boot OS X as you have described above so that I can do the "dual boot" as you have mentioned above? Hi jmciver, I have been away from this thread for a while. What I would do is download a copy of Gparted. Use Nero or imageburn to correctly burn the Gparted ISO image to a CD. If that went well, set your laptop's bios boot order to CD/DVD first. Boot from the Gparted live CD. From Gparted's drop down menu, change your hard drives disk label from msdos to GPT (the default is msdos); don't format the re-labelled hard drive, just leave it bare; Disk Utility in Snow Leopard will then recognise the drive as a native gpt Mac hard drive with GUID structure. That said, don't change the disk label to GPT if you want to dual boot with XP/Vista/Windows 7 from the same drive and use that machine as your primary work computer, as this can result in data loss in Windows if Windows crashes on you. If dual booting, leave the disk label as msdos, format the drive as Fat32 and, when in Disk Utility, set the drive to format as GUID. But multibooting is a whole different kettle of minor hassles, so let's concentrate on a single Snow set up. You will need a pre-boot CD for your retail Snow Leopard DVD, specifically what I use is an old version of blackosx's pre-boot CD. I can't link to the downloadable (we're not meant to post links) but you can find it mentioned here in the first post, for now. Make absolutely sure that you download version 1.01; other's contain a dsdt file for a specific Gigabyte motherboard; 1.01 also contains some needed kexts to get your keyboard and trackpad working and… just make sure you download and burn version 1.01 ISO to a CD. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=190718 That should get you started. Once you get past the Snow Leopard welcome screen and into Disk Utility, format the hard drive. If you labelled the drive GPT you won't need to select GUID from options. For the first few boots from the hard drive you will have to first use the pre-boot CD. Once you have registered your software and are at the desktop, you want to instal Chameleon. During install of Chameleon I chose to install it to the EFI partition but, for simplicities sake, just go with the defaults and it will install it to the root of your OS X partition. If you install it instead to EFI, you have to learn a couple of terminal commands so… save that for another day. So, you've installed Chameleon to the root of your OS X partition, which is to say usually your C-drive; there is a folder there called Extra and within that folder another folder called Extensions. In there you need to put… the extensions that I mentioned in an earlier post. Two of the more critical ones you can actually find in the preboot CD; in a folder called Extra you will find a preboot.dmg file. Drag that to the desktop and mount it by clicking on it - which will reveal a folder called Extra, within which is a folder called Extensions; you want to drag and drop the Nub kept and the PS2 controller kept into your Extra/Exensions folder. The rest of the kexts that I mention in my earlier posts you can google search. Also, though those kexts work in my setup, I can't guarantee that they will work with yours. I have noticed that your laptop uses the GMA 950 graphics chip. You might need some help with that one. Have a look around and see if you can find a kext for it. The chances are that kext won't work from Extra/Extensions. My 5620 works with the native GMA X3100. To save time with installing kexts, use Kext Utility; once you have all of the kexts that you need for your Extra/Extensions folder, drag the Extensions folder onto Kext Utility (which is to say install Kext Utility and then go to your Applications Utilities folder and drag Kext Utility onto your dock). To install the GMA 950 kext, drag it onto Kext Utility. It might be a good idea only to download a GMA 950 kext from a poster who is using an Acer; with the GMA X3100 there were various modified kexts floating around to get Dells, etc, to work, though Acers that have GMA X3100 chips usually work with the vanilla (untouched) default GMA X3100 kexts. UPDATEOne of the kexts in your Extra/Extensions folder should be PlatformUUID - you need to start up Disk Utility, right click on your OS X partition and then click on information, from here copy the Universal Unique Identifier number. You need to paste that number (overwrite the existing number) in the plist of the PlatformUUID kext, then save. Detosx
The installtion process still fails at the end, sometimes when it fails it displays this message: this step of installation failed << run preinstall script for 920 spped step kernel>> and sometimes when it fails this message is displayed << the installation program couldn't boot from your hard drive, please use the disk utility to select your drive and restart to perfom the installation again>>, really i've been trying to install this version of mac for 1 months without any success, if there's anybody out there who can help me, it'd be very cool and I'll be grateful to him forever. Hi Mechanic. I have never dual booted with XP but I think the easiest way to do it is to install something like EasyBCD in XP and use it as your boot manager. Unfortunately I don't think that is available for XP, just Vista and Windows 7. But it sounds as though you have been checking out the tutorials on insanelymac for dual booting with XP, so you probably set. Re your error messages. I wonder if you have a damaged retail DVD? I had to get a replacement from Apple for mine as it was error messaging right at the end of the install. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what the error messages were. Detosx
A general note to all Acer users out there. When trying to figure out how to install on your laptop, first make sure it is compatible; the best thing to do is to google your laptop's make and model number along with the word insanelymac. If you find someone who is using the same laptop as you but can't find details on how they got it up and running and the thread that they commented in isn't specific to Acer laptops, try private messaging the user; just click on their name and send them a friendly private message. Don't be discouraged if you don't get a reply; some people don't check their mails often or their mail box size limit has been overrun or they are just too busy. Also, don't be offended if they tell you to Google it, even if you have already done so! Also, please make sure you are using a retail DVD, which is to say that you at least own a retail DVD if installing via some other method. This and not posting links to sites outside of insanelymac keeps the moderators happy.
