KDCane
Hey all, Bit of a newb here but I've been searching with no luck, so I figured I'd ask. I know at least one person had an XPS 420 but he didn't post much of anything regarding his install. Installed the new Kalyway yesterday. Finally one that worked for me. Everything runs beautifully except for Intel Gigabit Networking (found out there is no kext or solution) and audio. My problem with the audio is twofold. First of all I can't tell which damn Sigmatel model I have. I've checked BIOS, device manager in Vista, everything. Dell's drivers say Sigmatel 92XX. Also I've tried a couple Sigmatel patches and none have worked. So if anyone out there has this setup and would care to help, I'd appreciate it! Thanks! Headrush69
It's a sigmatel 9227 Vendor Id: 0x83847618 and the codec dump you need is attached. xps420.txt A network driver is on the way soon too. Selayan
I have a xps 410 and the audio is Sigmatel High Def audio. It worked in tiger by using AppleHDA patcher and sigmatel 9227 dump. As for the Gigabit, I have a 82566DC gigabit ethernet and that will not work at all. Im guessing I have to find another ethernet to buy. KDCane
For some reason when I use the file you posted it says invalid codec or device. I tried to dump it but I couldn't write the file to any of my PC hard drives. Using a different Sigmatel codec dump for the 9227 it goes through but I still have no sound and see no output devices. Any ideas? If I can get this working I'll go buy a cheap wireless card that works and I'll be good to go. Headrush69
For some reason when I use the file you posted it says invalid codec or device. How are you saving it? I downloaded and use the version posted and works ok. Using a different Sigmatel codec dump for the 9227 it goes through but I still have no sound and see no output devices. Just any 9227 codec dump won't work, they have different IDs and addresses. Any ideas? What version of HDA Patcher are you using? KDCane
I'm using HDA patcher version 1.20 I downloaded the file from here with Firefox and saved as a .txt file to one of my PC hard drives. I moved it from the PC hard drive to the Frog Icon and it said that it was the wrong codec and it didn't patch. One of the other 9227 goes through the patch but no sound. Is your dump on an FTP site? Maybe I can redownload it? Or you could email it? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/77371-dell-xps-420-help/#findComment-547834 Share on other sites

KDCane
I get that message using HeadRushes 420 dump and the v1.20 patcher. If I use the 1.16 patcher the dump works and it looks like it does everything but no sound. Are there any other ways to get the Sigmatel 9227 working? KDCane
Update: I decided to do a clean install and try again... This time I can use Headrush's xps420.txt dump with HDA Patcher v1.20. This time the patcher runs with no "Unsupported Codec" message. Although I still have no sound card listed and no sound in "About this Mac" and in "System Preferences". It perplexes me. I'm pretty technically saavy so I'm pretty sure I'm doing things right. I saw someone else had a "stac9227patch.zip" containing two kexts on a Dell E520 thread. Do those work? If I can get some damned sound then I'm good to go. I'll get a wireless card & a 8800 GTX. Selayan
I tried the two test 9227 kexts and they did not work either. You do not need to use the patcher for em u just place them in extensions but they do not work. Dunno another way to get sound or net on the xps 410. Yes I can have this problem too and have to do this: Use my dump with HDA Patcher 1.13 Reboot Use my dump with HDA Patcher 1.20 Reboot See if you have audio now. I have to do those steps to get it working, If I reboot I lose audio and have to do those steps again. I'm trying to narrow the problem down but someone suggested that PC EFI might be related to this issue. KDCane
I just bought my cheap ass Dynex wireless G card at Best Buy, so I'm now typing this from Safari. Going to try your method now and reboot Headrush. Wish me luck! Follow up: No dice...Applied xps420.txt to Patcher 1.13 rebooted, applied xps420.txt to Patcher v1.2 rebooted, and no sound. At least having internet makes me feel a bit better. Anyone mentioned anything to Taruga on this issue? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/77371-dell-xps-420-help/#findComment-550557 Share on other sites

If I just had some damned sound! LOL KDCane, Did you get the integrated sound work on XPS420 eventually? I am kinda debating whether or not to buy an external USB sound card for my XPS420. Also, any luck to make the integrated ethernet card working? Thanks. kiboo
@Headrush69 oh man I tried your file, with HDA Patcher 1.13 / 1.20 I get the infamous "unsupported Sigmatel Codec" could it be that Dell used different Sigmatel versions on XPS 420? with different dump files I get different results.. the ones that are "supported" (or recognized) detect 2 or 3 Inputs/outputs but when I reboot sound is still disabled. I also tried to delete the Natit.kext (that makes my ATI HD2600XT work properly) and tried a couple of dump files.. still nothing. @KDCane lol, new sound card, if I decide to get one, that would mean that I'd have to get a network card, because of the damned Intel 82566dc!! I don't want to get more pc gadgets.. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/77371-dell-xps-420-help/#findComment-673051 Share on other sites
Headrush69
@Headrush69oh man I tried your file, with HDA Patcher 1.13 / 1.20 I get the infamous "unsupported Sigmatel Codec" The unsupported codec message is normal when using HDA patcher 1.13 as Targua hasn't added it into the database of that version. That doesn't mean that values are applied. could it be that Dell used different Sigmatel versions on XPS 420? I would be surprised, at least at this early stage. with different dump files I get different results.. the ones that are "supported" (or recognized) detect 2 or 3 Inputs/outputs but when I reboot sound is still disabled. Have you generated your own dump file using a Linux Live CD? Edit: I'm gonna do some test this weekend with a second non-EFI install.
