nagal
I am looking at get my first real Mac, a used dual core MacPro This is from when they were first released so I was wondering if anyone knows if the Quad Core CPUs will work in it. Just to clarify this is a dual 2.66 GHz Dual Core and later on down the road I would like to upgrade the cpus to the dual Quad Cores. thank Michael
sarahbau
As long as it's the same socket and bus speed, it should be fine. I have heard of people replacing dual cores with quad cores on Mac Pros and XServes. Actually, an XServe with dual quad 2.66s had the highest GeekBench score before Apple released the dual quad 3.0s. nagal
Thanks sarahbau. It is all the same socket and bus speed and I know it *should* work but I am little uneasy on the purchase. Not use to having computers with limited upgradability (is that a word?) and really want to move to the legitimate side of OS X.
~pcwiz
If something goes wrong couldn't you just RMA the CPU back?
Headrush69
If something goes wrong couldn't you just RMA the CPU back? Depends on the company. If they test it and conclude that it's perfectly fine, (which it should be), you very likely can get charged a restocking fee.
~pcwiz
But I doubt the restocking fee will be nearly as much as the price of the CPU itself
nagal
If something goes wrong couldn't you just RMA the CPU back? Its not about returning the CPU. If the original versions are not upgradable then I will just wait a bit longer and get the ones that are.
Headrush69
But I doubt the restocking fee will be nearly as much as the price of the CPU itself Obviously not but usually it's about 15%. So on a $250 quad CPU add that to the cost of return shipping, (which they rarely pay except for defective parts), and its about $40 - $50 I don't think most people would just throw away that sum if avoidable. (I hope someone hoping for donations to buy a computer isn't that wasteful. ) Over at ANandTech they threw in quad cores and they worked: http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2832&p=
~pcwiz
Headrush69 I definitely hope you're joking...Don't start it again please According to Anandtech its possible to upgrade the CPU: http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2832&p=6 and on a variety of sites, the "Clovertown" Quad-Core Xeon processor (LGA-771) is confirmed working with the Mac Pro

(basically)You have to make people do some of the reading ~pcwiz, new posters are really getting lazy in this forum.

Yes, I am picky sometimes.
