The best thing that ever happened to Apple? I doubt that. I'm sure some people have made the switch because of it, but that number is most likely much smaller than the number of people who switched because of the iMac, iPod, Mac mini, etc. There are probably also a lot of people out there using hackintoshes when they would have otherwise bought an actual Mac (like me - I've been waiting for them to come out with a mid-range Intel desktop for over a year now. I probably would have bought an iMac if I hadn't been able to get OS X running on my PC). I will still buy that mid-range desktop if they ever come out with one though.

Well, in my case being able to install OS X on non-native Apple hardware finally gave me the opportunity to take OS X out for a 'test drive' over a month or so.

That was last year.

Currently I only boot into Windows for gaming or C# development in Visual Studio. When I'm in the market for a new machine in a year or two, it will definately be a MacBook Pro.

I was always a little hesitent as I do like some video games that aren't mac compatible, but I've been strictly using OS X now for about a month and if I had the money I'd buy an MBP. But I do like a large screen and definitely don't have the 2 grand for th 17 inch. OS X86 definitely made me want to go to a mac though, and it will be the next comp that I buy when this one dies.

Take the number of insanelymac members, divide this by the number of computers Apple sold in the last year and I'm confident you will see it isn't much.

I'm sure someone will say "well I built x number of OS X machines for people that aren't members", but not every member has a Mac either so its an approximation.

Like sarahbau mentioned, ipod, iphone, and all-in-one iMac are the things that have jump started Apple more than anything.

I don't think it's the best thing to ever happen to Apple since the iPod wins that award hands down but it definitely has helped them gain market share -- especially among the very computer literate types who can get OSX86 working more or less perfectly. Even if you have the skill to make it work it ultimately IS easier to just buy a Mac so I suspect a very large percentage of OSX86 users end up spending money at the Apple Store. The only area I can see OSX86 hurting Apple is when it competes with the Mac Pro. There are a ton of people who want to run OSX on a mid-range tower have the option to boot into Windows to play games. These people absolutely need a replaceable video card. Unfortunately Apple has no product for them to buy so OSX86 is the only real solution. (unless you want to donate $2k to me and I'll buy a real MacPro)
