There is a grave misunderstanding that giving food is good help for poor developing countries. What they need is the ability to feed themselves. Of course in extraordinary circumstances emeregency food should be provided.

I do agree that it is not certain that OLPC is the best form of education, but I believe that it is better than nothing. The clue is anyway that education are the key to giving the poorest countries a chance to develop.

There is a grave misunderstanding that giving money to most 3rd world countries isn't just going into the dictators' pockets.

I think real charity is helping modernise farming techniques and sinking wells. Laptops are hardly a big priority when people are starving (except maybe to barter for some food!)

There is a grave misunderstanding about foreign aid.

I don't know how it is in your country, but I have to spend up to 400 euro every year for school supplies for 1 child. A computer which provides all the things he does and some more would be very very nice. That's one of the points of the OLPC. 200$ over 4 years of use are only 50$ per year, which isn't so much for school supplies. The other point is... if you only feed people and do not give them the means to help themselves at one point they will always depend on you, that seems to be wanted by quite a lot of western countries. Keep them uneducated and dependent so you can rip them off.

Another thing... why keep modern technology from them? Are they only allowed to learn stuff we left behind us 30 years ago? In a modern world it's crucial to be able to work with computers, so the OLPC is the right step...
