I don't use Boot Camp but many do. Do you think Apple really will use it to leverage an OS upgrade out of Boot Camp users? The article does say, "It is not clear whether Apple will offer its Boot Camp technology for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger." Seems to me this will be a critical issue to some. You'd think Apple would be clear on this issue very early on so Boot Camp users could plan ahead instead of jumping ship to competing products.

According to other sources on the web, when Bootcamp was first introduced they did say it was going to be a feature of Leopard and they were justing providing the beta for testing.

Whether true or not I can't verify, but if so I guess they were clear.

My guess is even if it was explicitly stated, many people wouldn't have read it anyways. How many people just download/install stuff without ever reading any readmes, docs, etc.?

I do hope Apple offers a "stand-alone" version of boot camp for Tiger users. I mean how long have intel macs been out now? a year? and what was one of the main selling points? "why buy a PC when you can run windows & OS X on the same machine!" So yes, of course people are going to download boot camp and use it to run windows, and then for Apple just to pull the plug on it so you HAVE to buy Leopard... well I think thats a bit harsh, and wouldn't do anything for their credibility as a consumer friendly outfit, would it?

I personally, cannot wait till Leopard hits the shelves, and will get as soon as... but not all of us are in that position!

Just my 2p

what was one of the main selling points? "why buy a PC when you can run windows & OS X on the same machine!"

Was that Apple saying that or just Mac backers?

I thought Apple was talking about Parallels whenever they originally talked about running Windows apps.

:D

There is a way around this. All the drivers can be found on TPB or the Demons so.....

Download iPartition or pay for it

Partition your Hard Drive and make a 10GB HFS+ partition

Boot ubuntu and use the partition manager to change the HFS+ partition to MS-Dos ( Fat 32 )

Then restart and insert Windows CD/ DVD

Install using the partition just created

Use the apple remote to boot windows after install ;)

I partitioned my HDD when I got my mac using the OSX Install DVD. Wiped out all my drives. Made 3 HFS Partitions. Formatted the last one to FAT32 and installed OSX again. After Installation finished, started Windows Install. Installed BootCamp drivers. Booted with OSX DVD and formatted second partition to FAT32 too.

I hope the drivers dont expire.

lol. Bootcamp as you know it is the little GUI app which makes a partition for you. Thats it. The rest is a CSM in firmware, and apple cant make that expire (and it doesnt have any methods inside it to know what time to expire). So all those who are booting with bootcamp are fine. All those who want to still use the GUI app to make a partition are still fine as anyone will be able to hack out the date/time check

edit: most of the drivers are stock standard (except from the useless apple keyboard ones)

I installed Bootcamp 1.2 on my Mac and indeed a message appeared telling me that I cannot use Bootcamp as it has expired and the program then quit :P . Fortunately, I found a way to bypass this and managed to install Bootcamp :D .

I'm not sure if I should say what I did incase Apple get angry :) .

Please tell, Iam getting uneasy about this as the launch of Leopard gets ever closer, and the expiration of Bootcamp.

Its just a simple changing the time and date on the computer before installing BootCamp and once BootCamp is installed you just change the time and date back to the current time and date.

I must stress that you should buy Leopard and use the BootCamp on Leopard as it is much better than the beta BootCamp on Tiger.
