JE Posted September 22, 2007 Share Posted September 22, 2007 I ask this due to the fact that I would like to go the Mac OS X route (I've been following this from the beginning) again but my machine that works just fine was the last SSE2 in the series, hence giving me problems I've installed OS X a few times on it only to have issues with the critical failure screen requiring me to restart. I would be working on something, open a program, and boom. Screen comes up. The NIC would stop communicating, too. This was a bit ago with Uphuck 1.4i. Any ideas? IF you have successfully used OS X as your main OS while using an SSE2 processor which distribution did you use? Headrush69 Posted September 22, 2007 Share Posted September 22, 2007 I've had 10.4.8 installed on my sisters AMD 3200+ SSE2 only for over a year and no problems. There were some areas where it was a little slower than my AMD X2 SSE3, but still completely usable. (Wouldn't notice slowdowns if you didn't have second machine to compare it to) Haven't been compelled to update to 10.4.10 as no problems as is and everything works. JCsHands Posted September 22, 2007 Share Posted September 22, 2007 I have been running OS X on my Intel 2.2Ghz SSE2 with 768MB of RAM and an Nvidia GForce FX5200 for about 6 months now, and love it! I notice some slow downs here and there and it is not a gaming computer, I think that OpenGL uses your SSE3 or something, but I can use it for everything else. I am running JAS 10.4.8 and upgraded it to 10.4.8 with out any problems. I am also using some HP Bluetooth adapter and it works great. I think that if anyone has a SSE2 CPU then they might as well install OSX86 on it and put it to good use. P.S. I will be buying a new Mac Pro when they come out with the new ones, right now I am just saving and wishing. Lactobacillus P Posted September 22, 2007 Share Posted September 22, 2007 JaS 10.4.8 upgraded to JaS 10.4.9 with the SSE3 only update and before rebooting inserted one of the new SSE2 10.4.9 kernels. Works like a dream. But my Ati Radeon Mobility on my SSE2 laptop is dependent on patched JaS Ati kexts, for proper functioning of CI and QE My SSE3 system is even better, my Nvidia 6600GTS is performing like native on JaS 10.4.9, the network needed patching on my Asus P4P800 but everything in the system works - except........ for the random hangs. And predictive hangs when trying to RIP a DVD with Handbrake or any other DVD ripper on OSX. I can run Doom3 or Prey on it without a problem, but the (random) hangs kill it for me. I have no idea what causes them. They also occur when I swap the Nvidia 6600GTS for an Ati Radeon 9600. So for me the 'inferior' SSE2 solution works the best. My Sony Vaio S150 has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200, never could get 1280x800. Mine features a 9700 mobility whereas a lot of other same type laptops feature the 9200. I have included a pdf stating the specs - alas in Dutch but you'll recognize the proper components. It features a pentiumM CPU which is SSE2, on JaS 10.4.8 the 9700 Radeon Mobility is recognized as Ati PCI card with QE and CI enabled despite the fact that it is not recognized properly in the -v boot. I believe that on SSE2 machines, only JaS will work properly on 9700 because the Ati Kexts were somehow patched to work with SSE2. The 9200 was never used in Apple machines, but I've read reports about people getting OSX to work on those wonderful Viao laptops. They look pretty much like Apple laptops to me those Sony ones... The apple DVD player won't work on SSE2 machines though! VLC is your best alternative. The SSE3 machine does run Apple's DVD player flawlessly. SquidMan Posted September 27, 2007 Share Posted September 27, 2007 I have been running 10.4.9 on my 1.5 GHz Celeron M PC with SSE and SSE2, but no SSE3, experienced no problems, except I had to go find the PIIXATA kext so i could grab stuff off of my SATA drive, and went through a bit of trauma getting my GMA 900 driver to work right so i get QE/CI, but overall its been great, at least 2x better than my XP Install, which was extremely stable. I used the UpHuck 10.4.9i v1.4 distribution, and its been sweet. I highly recommend it.
